Video: Crosby leaves game after taking puck in the face

Mar 30, 2013, 2:11 PM EDT

The joy of seeing Jarome Iginla‘s debut in Pittsburgh disappeared quickly thanks to a freak injury to Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.

Crosby was struck in the face by a deflected shot from teammate Brooks Orpik. His slapshot from the blue line hit off the stick of Islanders forward Brad Boyes and directly into Crosby’s face, dropping him to the ice and bleeding.

Check out the video from ROOT Sports via YouTube.

The Penguins report that Crosby will not return to the game and there is no update on what his injury entails. We’ll keep you posted.

Update (2:21 p.m. ET): TSN’s Darren Dreger says Crosby is off to the hospital likely to get dental work done. That million dollar smile might have a gap or two in it next time we see it.

    Oh. This storyline again. Lovely.

    • zetaone - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:20 PM

the storyline of crosby taking a puck to the face? Yes.. you’re right, this is posted every day…

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:03 PM

      Piere McGuire fainted !

  2. biffnasty - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:16 PM

what a baby..he should have got a penalty for diving

    • koontang11 - Mar 30, 2013 at 9:55 PM

nice to see the same people who call penguin fans classless commenting in this sort of fashion.

  3. eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Always a bad sight to see a puck up high hope it don’t bring on concussion like symptoms ! It must be serious he is a pretty tough dude in all reality !

    • coronakid76 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:45 PM

If he was so tough he would got a shot of novacane, stitched up and been back out on the ice like numerous other NHL’ers do. He is no way a Pretty Tough Dude.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Mar 30, 2013 at 6:03 PM

Lost a few teeth and had dental surgery. I think most guys would leave the game if that were the case. He’ll be back as soon as he can with a half shield to protect his jaw, no doubt about it.

  4. DonkeyStick - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:30 PM

Hope he’s alright and returns. I still hate Pittsburgh!!!!!!

  5. sportsfreak13 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:33 PM

Went to the hospital for dental work. Sounds like its mainly a teeth issue.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:53 PM

If he got hit in those choppers I hope the puck is ok !

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:55 PM

Yes but getting hit anywhere in the head can re-aggravate concussion-like symptoms. Not saying that’s the case at all but it’s happened to plenty of players. Laparierre had his career ended after getting hit in the face with a shot. I really am not wishing any of that on Crosby, as much as I hate him he’s good for the game, but you never know when and where a head injury can occur. Hell Pronger got his concussion symptoms on a seemingly harmless hit by Martin Hanzal. That’s what is so scary about head injuries.

  6. sjsharks66 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:33 PM

    Penalty for diving? Haha
    That is a stupid comment.

    • ravenscaps48 - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:34 PM

I do believe he was being facetious

      • pens5829 - Mar 30, 2013 at 7:04 PM

Still a stupid comment made by an even more STOOPID troll.

  7. nyrnashty - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:38 PM

But he has a visor on! I thought they were the answer to everything :)

  8. wisdomnfl - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:43 PM

    Get well soon Kid.

  9. thehighcountrybear - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:50 PM

    Terrible terrible injury…terrible luck!

Upper mandible and left cheekbone fractures, teeth gone, potential sinus damage from fragmented bone…long-term recovery with continuing balance issues.

Exacerbated concussion…hard to say but likely!

Won’t skate for a week or better, and will need to play with full shield…no big deal for younger player. Three weeks to a month before beginning to feel right…will shy away from any semblance of contact.

Tough three or four days ahead for our Sid…all the best, get well soon!

    • sheckyrimshot - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:11 PM

who died and made you mark recchi?

    • coronakid76 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:46 PM

I’m not a Doctor but I play one on PHT.

  10. revansrevenant - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:52 PM

The Pens have got to stop using the alternates. They are bad luck.

  11. csilojohnson - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:54 PM

I think I see a tooth fly out. Assuming it is dental work he is getting. That couldve easily shattered his jaw.
A ton of adversity for the Pens in this game. Who would’ve guessed the refs are disgruntled Flames fans. Bet Disco Dan is wishing he had dressed another center.
This is a great test though. Lets go Pens!!

  12. wisdomnfl - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:55 PM

There is no word on the actual injury yet.

  13. kgun80 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:56 PM

So when will the Brad Boyes suspension start?

  14. sewell1977 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:59 PM

Even the pucks hate his face. This is the like third time they punched him in the face this year.

    …sissy

  15. kegmen7 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:06 PM

Remind me again why visors or cages arent mandatory?

    • sewell1977 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:09 PM

Uh, he does wear a visor?

      • kegmen7 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:44 PM

First, a cage is different from a shield- had you ever played hockey you’d know that. Second, this is yet another example why guys who don’t have anything on are nuts. How many guys need to be hit in the face with a puck or stick until something is done?

  16. dutchman1350 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:09 PM

Orpik will probably get suspended for that!

  17. jacketsfan7 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:10 PM

Damn I was expecting a lot more negative jokes about Sid , looks like I misjudged you:)

    • pugsley927 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:12 PM

      give it time.

  18. pugsley927 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:10 PM

Hope the puck didn’t smear his makeup.

    • coronakid76 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:51 PM

Looks like an opportunity for the new Bridgstone puck next year. Better grip on the ice and all.

  22. wisdomnfl - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:29 PM

    Wonder what Captain Claudia thinks?

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:44 PM

Most likely that he’s a puss The Captain played last year with two broken wrist !

      • pens5829 - Mar 30, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Speaking of pusses? Eigglesnosuperbowls trolls again.

  23. bhawkce - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:33 PM

even tho I can’t stand the Pens, it sucks as a fan to see something like that happen to anyone. hope he ends up OK in a few weeks. Now we get to see Iginla step up right in the mix.

saddest part about the play was that Cindy’s skirt got wrinkled when tumbling to the ice.

  28. csilojohnson - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:54 PM

coronakid76, You don’t even know the extent of the injury yet. Sheesh, you cant even spell novocaine. Maby it was sarcasm…..dont see it. Though some people can be pretty dry. He is the best board player in the game. You have to be tough to out work guys behind the net.

    • coronakid76 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:16 PM

Outwork!!!! Nobody is allowed to touch him! Watch the next few games…Members of his team will be drilled along the boards. When Crosby has the puck, He gets stick checked….Nobody runs him like the rest of the team. There is a Double Standard where he is concerned in regards to penalties being called for contact. I just cant respect him as a Captain. He is too dirty, goes down too easily and runs his mouth too much. Malkin should have the C on that team. Guy just does his job and goes about his business.

    • pugsley927 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:56 PM

your banging on someone for misspelling “novocaine” and then you butcher the word “maybe”. Wow.

      • pugsley927 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:57 PM

guess no one is perfect….”you’re”, not your. my bad. lol

  29. wisdomnfl - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:59 PM

    Sewell, you are a dope.

    • sewell1977 - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:18 PM

wisdom, that was an awesome joke

  30. sonofsamiam - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Outlaw deflections! Everybody should now have to put their in a specially designed holster if a shot is taken. The league can’t afford to risk fancy Sid getting hurt by a maliciously deflected shot with intent to injure.

  31. broadstbully33 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:04 PM

    Poor puck… I hope it’s ok

    • sewell1977 - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:19 PM

Why wouldn’t it be? I know I would be if I was hit by a girl.

I laughed pretty hard when he got hit with the puck. Not gonna lie.

Go ahead and give me a thumbs down, I don’t care. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing it.

    • pugsley927 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:55 PM

I’ve watched it 12 times and still am taking enjoyment from the play.

    • sectualvanilla - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:01 PM

I gave you a thumbs up for being honest. I appreciate that.

  36. valoisjoeybfeld69 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Oh! Oh! Crosby will have to undergo surgery. Hope it’s nothing too serious. They’ll need him to hold off a surge from the Flyers….. :-)

  37. bronxsanman - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:02 PM

This is exactly why girls shouldn’t play hockey.great job by that puck though.im surprised to see it return from such a horrific injury.slamming off those horse teeth had to hurt.

I bet this isn’t the first time he took a hot shot to the face.

  42. ksingleton101 - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:01 PM

The puck is very controllable and can intentionally be place where you want it just like a base ball. I’ve been to game where I’ve worn an opposing team’s hat and had pucks fly over the glass at me more than once. You know it’s at you when the guy rushes the glass and stairs right at you after words. I recovered 3 out of 4 pucks as I entered an arena in Cincinnati once. All of them come within a few feet of me but none made contact.

Ranger fan who hates to see this happen to anyone. Get well soon kid.

  45. txhockeydad - Mar 31, 2013 at 12:37 AM

Even if you hate the guy, anyone who derives enjoyment from an injury like this is disgusting. You are the same guys that would love him if he was on your team. If some of you are fortunate enough to have children some day, you will view people as someone else’s child, and your perspectives will mature and develop into something less sad. Until then, just roll around in your ignorance and proclaim it to the work with all your might.

Hockey gods are mad this year. The only guys going down are the top line guys. On, what seems to be, every team.

  48. tlndma - Mar 31, 2013 at 11:02 AM

I wonder what Cooke thought was so funny on the Pens bench? Everyone else looked concerned and worried.
