Sean Avery calls for John Tortorella’s head

Mar 30, 2013, 10:10 PM EST

The New York Rangers’ headaches continued on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, prompting one of the team’s former headache-makers to come out of the woodwork.

Retired winger Sean Avery wasn’t shy about laying the blame at John Tortorella’s feet, calling for his last NHL coach’s head on Twitter:

Now that’s some quality chirping. Let’s look at the checklist:

  • He spoke about himself in the third person (or at least the third Twitter handle).
  • Solid use of all caps.
  • He demanded that Tortorella gets fired.
  • Apparently Torts doesn’t like the word clown.
  • Avery even threw in Charlie Sheen’s #winning at the end.

Admit it, you kind of miss Avery’s antics, don’t you?

I think he’s from one of those real housewives shows

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 31, 2013 at 12:12 AM

I think he has a lot of sugar in him

    • cheesesteak75 - Mar 31, 2013 at 12:14 PM

Biggest fool in all of pro sports!

  2. DonkeyStick - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:16 PM

It’s nice to see he stopped making purses for his 5 more mins of fame

  3. esracerx46 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:16 PM

Cant say I disagree, despite how much I dislike Avery.

  4. vpisteve99 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:17 PM

If anything will saveTortorella’s job, it’s Avery calling for him to be fired. This tweet could be also read as “Sean Avery, just hanging around watching hockey – available for any NHL coaching jobs in NYC.”

  5. trbowman - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:18 PM

“Admit it, you kind of miss Avery’s antics, don’t you?”

    No. I don’t.

  6. letsgopens8771 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Sean Avery running his mouth again…Tell me something new.

    • badintent - Apr 1, 2013 at 3:16 AM

      Sloopy Seconds anyone ?? LOL

      • badintent - Apr 1, 2013 at 3:19 AM

My bad. Sloppy seconds. Don’t type and eat sloppy nachos at the same time.

  7. sportsfan69 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:27 PM

    Fire Torts! Hire Phil Housley.

  8. sportsfan69 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:29 PM

What’s your excuse tonight Coach Turds? The players have quit on you. Dump and chase is 90’s hockey. It’s the year 2013.

    • stakex - Mar 30, 2013 at 11:16 PM

I don’t like the style Torts has the Rangers playing one bit… but the players didn’t, and haven’t, quit on him. At least not yet.

They actually were the better team for large parts of this game. They held large advantages in zone time and shots on goal, which shows the players were still fighting for the win. They just can’t score… its really an amazing sight to see.

      • cweez2 - Mar 31, 2013 at 12:18 PM

What game did you watch? The one I saw had Del Zotto picking his nose while Gallagher walked the puck in. I don’t care what the stats said, if you got beat 3-0 it was wasted effort…what little of it was there

  9. 1010gary - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:29 PM

Team has stopped playing for coach. Other teams have no fear of this team.
Same plays over and over… One shot and done, no sustained pressure at all.

Let go of Torts, or at least lame assistant

Bring in Nick Fotiu (some lower level coaching experience) let him tuffen (?) them up.

    season ticket holder since 1992.

    • qwicwted - Mar 31, 2013 at 2:42 PM

You know Lindy Ruff (former Ranger) is available!

  10. sportsfan69 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Hire Coach Phil Housely, Stephan, JT Miller, and Kneider would welcome it. At least there would be some creative on the ice once again.

  11. leeeroooyjeeenkiiins - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:34 PM

If I was the Rangers GM, this would push me in the direction of giving him one more year.

    • stakex - Mar 30, 2013 at 11:19 PM

If it was up to Sather, Avery would be in the Rangers lineup right now. It was Torts who refused to play him.

…and say what you want about him, but Avery would certainly add a little more flair to this team.

      • nicknyhc - Mar 31, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Avery, Wolski, Redden, Kreider, Gaborik, Zuccarrello….

All guys Torts didn’t/doesn’t like and either got rid of, sends up and down to the minors, or benches non-stop. Torts has his favorites and if you’re not one then you’re screwed. Bottom line. His personality conflicts with players are killing the team.

  12. jaybyrd99 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:39 PM

    Speaking of the rangers GM
A- I hope he recovers quickly so
B- someone can fire his unsuccessful butt
Slats has been here 13 seasons and has had 5 head coaches( including his sorry self)unlimited UFA busts and only 4 playoff round wins . That’s pathetic !

  13. mz1394 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:39 PM

Clown, his players hate him and won’t play for his bs was Avery looking in the mirror when he posted this. Also can we stop using the term retired when writing about him just refer to him as the clown pos that was forced out of the league because his play and antics s u c k e d #LOSER

  14. sportsfan69 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:40 PM

A relic (dinosaur) coach = John Tortorella

  15. crazemastercraze - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:41 PM

Wow, Avery’s mutant power is perception. No duh, idiot. It couldn’t be more obvious that Tortarella lost this team as they are “playing” to get him fired. Huge surprise. He’s a jerk. And it’s very likely the Rangers sucked all a long. There was zero passion from these guys. You’d figure the penalty minutes would have racked up by the third period due to frustration and team pride but alas, nothing. And do we need anymore examples of what a over paid chump Gaborik is? They should fire Tortarella now so they can get Lindy Ruff before another team grabs him.

    • ffrey3660 - Mar 31, 2013 at 11:50 AM

Gaborik is hockeys Randy Moss. Plays when he fells that there is something in it for him. So glad when he left Minn. Not a team guy.

  16. sportsfan69 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:41 PM

Correction – creativity on the ice – modern hockey.

  17. sportsfreak13 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:52 PM

At the beginning of this shortned season who would of guessed the rangers would be the team having the hardest time scoring goals. I sure wouldn’t. I thought the Atlantic was going to bd the toughest division. Again I was wrong. Crazy times.

Can’t say I disagree with the king of fashion.

  20. proudliberal85392 - Mar 30, 2013 at 11:38 PM

Avery: Once a pinhead, always a pinhead.

  21. misterchainbluelightning - Mar 31, 2013 at 12:02 AM

Sean Avery has no actual friends and that is a fact. He has acquaintances, never had any friends growing up and was disliked by everyone in school. Disliked by teammates everywhere he went. Nothing has changed, he was a goof as a kid and it hasn’t stopped. He’s bitter and will always remain so.

  22. mrmcl - Mar 31, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Doesn’t that Avery tweet qualify as “hate speech”? Sean probably ought to be fired from HIS job.

  23. nicknyhc - Mar 31, 2013 at 12:52 AM

Love him or hate him, Avery is right on this.

Coming from a lifelong Rangers fan. Torts has got to go.

  24. nashernation - Mar 31, 2013 at 2:35 AM

I was always a Torts fan but it is clear his system is not working with this group of players. They better put a beat down on the Jets tomorrow night or the garden may get ugly.

  25. blackhawks2010 - Mar 31, 2013 at 3:02 AM

Who cares what this idiot says? Avery is a joke.

  26. prosportswashington - Mar 31, 2013 at 5:14 AM

You want to fire Tortarella because you want a winning coach, who plays “modern hockey”, so you suggest Lindy Ruff?

  27. bbk1000 - Mar 31, 2013 at 7:00 AM

If you hate Avery, you probably aren’t a Rangers fan. If you are a Rangers fan, you don’t know $h!t about hockey.

Avery, when playing his game created controlled mayhem. The team was better with him on the ice.

And aside from that, he is correct, the Rangers need to dump Tortorella. His act has gotten old, the team isn’t listening.

  28. dareu2steelmypenguin - Mar 31, 2013 at 8:15 AM

You think its bad now…wait til they play the Pens twice in three days.

  29. tomahawk12 - Mar 31, 2013 at 8:16 AM

    Go Pens Go!

  30. credible316 - Mar 31, 2013 at 8:41 AM

  31. 950003cups - Mar 31, 2013 at 8:45 AM

Welcome back Sean. We missed you on the ice.

  32. chip56 - Mar 31, 2013 at 8:51 AM

    Is Sean a moron? Absolutely.

Is he right in this case? Yeah probably.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 31, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Yeah but even a broken clock is right twice a day

  33. capone888 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:05 AM

Say what you want about Avery, but he has a point. Rangers have a top-five defense, but are last on offense. Its not like they don’t have people who can score on this team. You have to hold the coach responsible for this lack of offensive performance.
Please don’t say its the players who are not playing up to their potentional. The only person on the Rangers you can say that about is Richards, and he is a Torts guy. It is the job of the coach to get the most out of his players and his roster is stacked, and Torts can’t get it done.
Rangers should feel blessed they have their D and goalie back there or else even a shot at the playoffs would not be within reach right now.
Torts has got to go after this season.

    • jaybyrd99 - Mar 31, 2013 at 1:50 PM

As long as mr. “I can win a gazillion cups with nyr money but has only won 4 playoff rounds in 13 seasons” darth sather goes with him .
At some point the media has to get off the good ole boys network, and call out slats for what he’s been in new york- horrible !
Ron low, bryan trottier, the overlord himslf, tom renney, and torts. When does the buck stop upstairs.?

  34. jacketsfan7 - Mar 31, 2013 at 11:22 AM

what a clown indeed. remember shawn it takes one to know one

  38. qwicwted - Mar 31, 2013 at 2:53 PM

Rangers have some of the top players in the league – Nash, Richards, Gaborek, Staal, Del Zatto, Callahan, McDonagh, Girardi, Lundquest to name a few. They should be blowing out other clubs, but to be Torts can only get the team “so far” – always a bridesmaid, never a bride regardless of all the talent that they have. I think part of the problem is that Torts is too emotional and it effects his coaching – you can see it with his body language and on his face. Seems to me that when you have a bunch of stars – you can’t single out mistakes that are made. Lindy is available and so is Guy – not sure whether they would want to work in such a media zoo, but maybe what the Rangers need is someone who is confident and has the ability to focus on positives instead of blowing the negatives out of proportion.
