Lightning’s Thompson suspended two games for illegal head check

Mar 30, 2013, 4:59 PM EST

It turns out Brendan Shanahan had good reason to have a meeting with Lightning forward Nate Thompson today.

The Department of Player Safety suspended Thompson for two games thanks to the illegal head check he delivered to Devils forward Matt D’Agostini last night.

As Shanahan will show in the video below, Thompson could’ve avoided delivering a blow to D’Agostini’s head but instead chose to target it instead. Take it away, Shanny.

Thompson will give up $9,729.72 in salary to the benefit of the NHL Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund and return to action next Saturday against the Islanders. He’ll miss the team’s games on Tuesday against the Panthers and Thursday on the road against the Hurricanes.
