Flyers owner Snider puts faith in GM Holmgren to fix things up

Mar 30, 2013, 3:42 PM EDT

Ed Snider AP

Safe to say this season has been disappointing for the Flyers. They entered the day 14th in the East and six points out of the playoffs and not exactly playing inspiring hockey.

While the team unveiled a statue featuring 1970s legends Bernie Parent and Bobby Clarke, team owner Ed Snider was quizzed about what’s next for his team. Tim Panaccio of shares what he had to say about GM Paul Holmgren’s role in fixing things up.

“I don’t want to talk about anything about when the season ends, who’s safe and who isn’t safe,” Snider replied. “These are decisions Paul Holmgren is going to have to make, not me.”

“We came into the season with high expectations, and it just seems like everything that could go wrong has gone wrong,” Snider said. “But the good teams overcome that and we’ve got to find a way to regroup, and I guarantee you we’ll be a heck of a lot better.”

If that sounds like a vote of confidence for Holmgren, it sure seems like it. The team’s had a host of injuries to their defense and their lack of addressing blue line depth in the offseason has hurt them. If Philly isn’t busy at the deadline, you have to believe they’ll be busy this summer.

Let’s hope he turns it around, no fun to beat up on Philly when they are god awful. Ok maybe a little fun.

        NHL playoff chances:

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 6:12 PM

Most stupid thing I ever seen and it has a strong team like the Bruins with a 7% chance to win the cup See you in the first round!

      • cheesesteak75 - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:30 PM

Last year vs this year Pens is 2 different teams. Pens added goaltending, leadership , and D. What did the flyers add? Nothing! The fish always stinks from the head down! The flyers stink from Snyder to fish town!

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:32 PM

        its fishtown

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:34 PM

here come the flyers do b do b do

      • valoisvipers - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:35 PM

They have win out the season playing 750% to make the cut line to the playoffs.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:36 PM

four points out just admit it your scared do b do b do

      • cheesesteak75 - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:45 PM

What you really mean is it’s Fishtown. That’s third grade grammar!

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:51 PM

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 30, 2013 at 9:20 PM

Pittsburgh and Montreal better start tanking some games because they are helping the Flyers claw back into this thing. Oh, and it is Fishtown not Fish Town you dumba$$

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 30, 2013 at 9:23 PM

broadstreet we are still in this you can smell the fear coming from the west or is that just their woman we smell

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 30, 2013 at 9:30 PM

It could be fear, more than likely it is their women, but if I was a gambling man I would say its the urine running down their legs. Then again it could be the crap being spewed from their mouths on a daily basis.

  2. sizzle299 - Mar 30, 2013 at 3:55 PM

One good thing about the lockout was never having to read and crap from Tim Panaccio. He literally works for the team, via CSN, and never has anything to say other than tow the line, plant stories and make team-approved ‘criticisms’. Find something better to do Tim, in another city…

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:02 PM

I have to disagree. If he simply went along with the team wants him to say then all the players wouldn’t hate him. Have you seen the contempt Richards and Pronger have for the guy? Or the way Snider wanted to sock him in the face when he was asking these questions? I hate Panaccio, someone who’s covered hockey for so long should certainly understand the game better, but he definitely isn’t a yes-man for the Flyers organization.

    • jimw81 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:04 PM

This is the same Tim Panaccio who tweets and wrote stuff about penguins while covering the flyers for inquirer and csn. he’s a penguins fan. plus he takes credit for other people’s work.

  3. hockeyfan28 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:01 PM

Holmgren deserves one more year…..How the heck do you not miss on the power play for a week and have no.1 unit in the league and yet be a lottery team…. a high draft pick and couple players they’ll be back

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:05 PM

Absolutely agree. If they could’ve just put out consistent effort like they did today they’d easily be in playoff position. It’s the inconsistency that’s killed them, and you can’t blame the GM for that. You know Snider and Holmgren will do whatever is necessary to get this team back. They don’t take kindly to losing.

  4. President Charles Logan - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:03 PM

if next season Lindy Ruff isnt the coach and Bryzgalov isnt claused out of his contract then there is something seriously wrong with the brain trust of this team.

    • flyers22 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:10 PM

lavy and bryz are not the problem you must wear a f*cking helmet if you think thats a problem its the D we lose our leader on D and we have been in shambles ever since. When pronger was in the lineup we had one of the best defenses in the league not to mention look at the injuries we have on defense coburn meszaros grossmann all hurt they need to upgrade the defense in the offseason the offense is young and has plenty of fire power we just need help on the back end and this team will be right at the top of the standings again. if we can go to the cup finals with leighton and boucher bryz can certainly do the same thing with a solid d in front of him.

      • President Charles Logan - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:47 PM

ur delusional , lavy has lost the team , its over

  5. valoisvipers - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:03 PM

First comes the vote of confidence, then comes the boot.
I hope not because he does make things interesting from a hockey fan’s point of view.

  6. coronakid76 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:06 PM

All that means is he has 1 more season. Callin’ a Mulligan on this year.

  7. jimw81 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:07 PM

That was a vote of confidence if Snider is coming out syaing what is going wrong. Holmgren doesn’t deserve another year. he gaved a 40yr old defenseman a 8mill contract and the list goes on.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:33 PM

It was $6 mil not $8 million. And he would’ve gotten that easy on the open market, especially with the likes of Visnovsky, Enstrom, and Edler getting new contracts. You need Timonen to be that #2 dman, we just need the #1. We had it with Pronger but he’s been extremely difficult to replace. Like I’ve said before it’s the equivalent of the Bruins losing Chara to a career-ending injury. Think they’d struggle defensively and have trouble replacing him?

      • jimw81 - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:32 PM

it was holmgren’s fault for sitting around and do nothing but signing garbage players before the lockout. Paul Holmgren is on hook for Meszaros at 5.5M next year, Timonen at 6M and Bryz contract. Missing out on DeKeyser. Flyers are 15-21-2 since Penguins series in playoffs.

To sum it up, We’ve been the joke of the league since the start of the season, shouldn’t be surprised we end it that way.

    • jimw81 - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:35 PM

if sndier had to fly back from california and stay for the rest of season. they are changes going to be made. The flyers are losing 7-9 million this year because of empty seats, lockout and strong possibility of missing the playoffs.

  8. wisdomnfl - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:31 PM

Oh yea very afraid of that mighty Flyers team. They are scary! Oh my, I hope we don’t face them!

  9. crazemastercraze - Mar 30, 2013 at 4:37 PM

This team would have sucked even without the injuries, only those who don’t live inside the 1974-75 season time travel bubble can see that. Overrated in every way.

  10. mclovinhockey - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Philly just needs to not miss out on 5 points the rest of the season. It’s hard but with the time line it’s happened 7 times this season off the top of my head teams would have done it. That’s if all the other teams do VERY well. Philly is now 11th, I think 4 points out of a playoff spot.

  11. mclovinhockey - Mar 30, 2013 at 5:16 PM

So President moron blames Bryz and Lavy for having our O not be consistent, our D falling apart and all of the injuries?

Yeah Bryz could use a better goalie coach and a backup so he did not have to play more games a year than most our players, but Bryz has not been to blame for the majority of goals. Philly needs a serious upgrade on D.

  12. broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 30, 2013 at 6:02 PM

The Flyers still have a shot at limping into the playoffs and playing spoiler.

    • jimw81 - Mar 30, 2013 at 6:30 PM

      5% chance of that happening.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 30, 2013 at 6:56 PM

It was 2% yesterday according to that stupid stat website.

      • jimw81 - Mar 30, 2013 at 11:31 PM

        nate silver?

    • cheesesteak75 - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Spoiler to only the fools that pay for the tickets to watch them.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 30, 2013 at 9:24 PM

Because we all know your fanboy legion of a fan base only buys tickets when your turd of a franchise wins games.

  13. wisdomnfl - Mar 30, 2013 at 6:36 PM

I’d love to see Pgh and Philly in first round but chance is only about 2 pct. This statistical chart is great.

  14. mclovinhockey - Mar 30, 2013 at 7:56 PM

@jimw81…. Flyers losing money due to empty seats??? Yet, Still selling out every game. Not sure where you got your numbers but Philly is one of the stronger teams in making money.

  15. mclovinhockey - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:00 PM

    Also @jimw81.
Once again not sure where you get your numbers but the cap hit of Mez is 4 mill. Not 5.5.

As for timonen, I recently heard a rumour out of LA that they would love to pick him up. He is still a great player but he needs to be on the 2nd pairing or have a solid partner.

    • jimw81 - Mar 30, 2013 at 11:38 PM

mclovinhockey, are you watching the same games on tv as i am? i see empty seats and cheap seats on stubhub because the fanbase has quit on this team and they deserve to. you can heard in snider’s comments today what the fans are thinking. as the timonen, flyers will not trade him at this point. flyers would have ask for a very high price for him

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:47 AM

@jimw81 Wow, just wow. The sheer idiocy of the Hens fans never ever ceases to amaze me. All kidding aside, do you guys ever stop spewing nonsense? The Flyers are 4th in attendance this year and the Hens are at 12th. Do you practice much math in your spare time? The empty seats you claim to see are probably because you tune in around bathroom break time where all us fans go use the facilities. Each urinal is equipped with a photo of Cindy Crysby and his toothless grin where we can relieve ourselves in style.

  16. mclovinhockey - Mar 31, 2013 at 8:44 AM

Jim, flyers still sold out every game. Lots of fans watch the game at the bar inside the building because its the largest in any pro arena, has great food and lots of TVs/ beer. Philly is 4th in attendance behind Chicago, Montreal and Toronto.

Actually kimo would have a decent price but he would also have a lot of interest. Specially from LA who actually has injury woes on D. Just saying
