Bruins coach: ‘We need to wake up’

The Boston Bruins’ recent run of shaky play continued on Saturday as they dropped a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. Head coach Claude Julien explained the team’s biggest issues to following the defeat:

“It’s a different line in another game, and then the other three [aren’t going]. We can’t win hockey games relying on one line per night producing for us,” Julien said. ” … We need to relax a little. But we also need to wake up and play Bruins hockey. Because that’s not what we’re playing right now.”

Many Bruins fans probably wonder what could have been as Jarome Iginla made his Pittsburgh Penguins debut today.

Julien seemed to indirectly address the lack of trades while reflecting on Boston’s woes.

“If we’re looking for help, we’re looking in the wrong direction,” Julien said. “We really need to start looking at ourselves because as a team right now we’re not playing well. We’re very average in all areas and we’re not playing Bruins hockey. We can out-shoot teams all night long, but it doesn’t mean much.”

Tough guy Shawn Thornton believes it’s not for a lack of trying.

“I don’t think it’s a lack of effort right now. I think it’s just a lack of execution,” Thornton said. “For whatever reason, we were squeezing our sticks in the first two periods. We’re just not making plays that we’re capable of making. I honestly think the effort was there.

“I don’t know if we’re trying a little bit too hard and we’re just bobbling things right now. We just need to get back to having fun and making plays. We’re a good team.”

    Habs are better.

I still believe, despite their struggles, that Boston is a legitimate contender. They have a true #1 dman and captain (Chara, obviously), an excellent goaltender, and a group of top-6 forwards that can match up with anyone in the NHL. The Flyers might have played their first 60 minute effort of the season, and when they do that they look like a clear playoff team. Not to mention Bryzgalov played one of his best games as a Flyer. Every team has poor stretches in a season but the Bruins have the experience and talent to pull out of it. They’ll turn it around and they will be a legitimate challenge for the Pens if they meet in a 7-game series.

Well said! And let’s not forget the Flyers are not a bag of pucks.they are dangerous team when they play to their potential.

  3. whammy71 - Mar 30, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Keep kissing each other’s asses!!!! B’s have no offensive firepower…Pens won’t lose four 2-1 games to them out of seven. You could combine your teams and yinz will still lose in 5. WHAMMY!!!!

    • bigbadbruins77 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:22 PM

I’ll remember that later in the playoffs when the pens get knocked out 1st round again. And speaking of combining teams…look at them trying to buy a cup

      • whammy71 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:39 PM

Try again cry baby!!!! (boo hoo….Iggy hosed us!)

Can’t “buy” a Cup in a salary cap league – you sound as stupid as a Filthy fan. WHAMMY!!!!

Pens are spending to the cap. Every team is allowed to do it.

All acquired contracts are expiring. So it is not messing with our salary structure going forward. Not to mention, Pens have several top players to resign in the offseason + a bunch of UFAs and RFAs. Picking these 3 guys up was actually a smart move by RS. He has tons of flexibility in the offseason – can go in many, many directions depending on who signs and who doesn’t.

Did we mortgage our future??? Um, NO! Gave up a mid-to-top level prospect, 2 college kids and 3, maybe 4 draft picks. And the farm system is STILL STACKED. Not to mention we’ll have Bennett and Despres contributing at the NHL level all year long.

Did the Pens go 1-3 in PO series since winning the Cup – YEP!!! Could blame injuries and host of other things….but Pens don’t cry about that stuff. They lost and they own up to it. This year’s team is totally different. The players they brought in are all hungry and only need to fill a complimentary role.

Better start going to the driving range – your golf season will start before ours!!!! WHAMMY!!!!!

      • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:23 AM

Whammy may have taken the crown for the biggest troll on here. Haven’t seen him here all season, then the Pens acquire Iginla, Murray, and Morrow and WHAMMY… he suddenly can’t stop himself from talking trash! Maybe he just didn’t think the Pens were such a sure thing, considering their finish the past two years, until the Pens acquired another hall of famer. Then he decided it was safe to jump back on the bandwagon. After all the Pens had similar streaks the past few years and they couldn’t get past the first round. A bunch of big names doesn’t guarantee a Cup!

      • drone501 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:36 AM

sour grapes? bruins wanted igninla but he said “hell no”.

      • whammy71 - Mar 31, 2013 at 2:36 PM

Sorry PhillyPhalicSymbol – just been reading all the garbage from the Cryer fans all season……then once Iggy picked PGH over BOS, had to hear all the B fans crying. So I decided to jump in.

No band wagon fan here – I remember Pens giving up a 3-1 lead to Islanders with 6 minutes to go….game 5 (deciding game) in 1982 playoffs.

Been a fan through thick and thin. So try again.

    • bigbadbruins77 - Mar 31, 2013 at 12:21 AM

WHOA look at that tangent! down boy! easy killer, looks like I hit a nerve there princess 😉 Joey is that you? “cry baby iggy hosed us?” Where did I say that!? In fact, I didn’t want Iggy, but I am a fan and would love to see him pull a “Ray Bourque”. I wanted St. Louis or Jagr and Yandle. I actually understand why Iggy joined the pens, Crosby is a good friend, they played on the same line for team Canada and won gold (off a Iggy pass).

Golf? Little early to be talking about that, lets see if the pens can get past the 1st round. And everyone knows there is a cap, doesn’t mean they didn’t go out and spend to get every name they could. I really don’t believe it’s going to workout well for them, there is so many factors, such a dynamic game. “could have blamed it on injuries and being tired” You just implied excuses, every team has those, who cares, shut it. And if I hear one more biased team fan say “omg we are so young, so stacked, such a good farm system, so many prospects”, I’m going to puke.

Bottom line is the pens will fail against the Bruins in a 7 game series, you’ll see princess.

      • whammy71 - Mar 31, 2013 at 3:08 AM

Go check out the Jagr trade bait thread and you’ll see all the bruin crying I’m talking about. Better start practicing your putting – gonna be a long offseason..

      • drone501 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:38 AM

whammy speaks the truth. truth hurts.

      • whammy71 - Mar 31, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Hey BigBadJabroni – way to be a man and make fun of Gordie Howe over in his bday thread. Now I’m super happy pens knocked out b’s in early 90s when Bs were Cup favorites. And ended cam and savard’s career. With fans like you Bs deserve all the bad karma they can get.

    • rosettast0ned - Mar 31, 2013 at 11:34 AM

There is a difference between having “no offensive firepower,” and having your forwards play a well rounded game. The bruins are a defensively minded team its no secret, but to say their forwards have no firepower is pretty ridiculous. This group of “no offensive firepower” forwards have a cup to their name so they must be doing something right, oh yeah they can play defense consistently, while still scoring enough goals to win games, something Pittsburgh could take a few notes on. Yes I will acknowledge the fact that the pens have played good D as of late, I for one don’t expect it last. Pittsburgh isn’t untouchable dude, they have been hyped up to win the cup for years, but yet they get ousted in first round multiple times. You picked up some rentals congratulations, probably needed some insurance since your star players are perpetually injured…………………………WHAMMY!!!! <– Does anyone else find that phrase as obnoxious as I do?

  4. tdrusher225 - Mar 30, 2013 at 9:53 PM

The Bruins need a jolt, and they need it now. I know there are ebbs and flows to a season and they have a tough schedule right now, but Chiarelli needs to bring some players in. I think could have a positive effect on a locker room, as well as bring a little excitement and energy. God knows the Bruins could use it.

  5. mclovinhockey - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:24 PM

@whammy, the B’s are a VERY deep team. They play a physical game, more physical than Philly which last year was too much for the pens and the pens responded with dirty hits. Don’t underestimate the B’s.

This was a good game, the B’s did not play 100% and Philly even without 3 of their top 5 D played better than they have defensively.

    • whammy71 - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:43 PM

Pens won both games so far….but the B fans will pull a Cryers fan analogy and start crying about being tired. Pens ain’t losing four 2-1 games vs Bs and the Bs don’t have the offensive firepower to keep up. Frankengoon and company was able to keep the Pens in check cause Geno was out and Frankengoon could concentrate on Sid’s line. Won’t be the same if they meet in the POs.

Pens in 6, if not 5.

      • dboldave - Mar 30, 2013 at 11:20 PM

Lots can happen between now and the playoffs. Predicting the outcome of a series now is about as dumb as your rants and swell nicknames.

    • rosettast0ned - Mar 31, 2013 at 11:50 AM

      Well stated.

  6. bobhpine - Mar 31, 2013 at 1:19 AM

Can the bruins score against the pens?

Check out the pens d over the past month. Boston hardly has big time goal scorers. The unspoken part of this epic win streak is the fact that the pens aren’t getting scored on at all.

  7. billobrienschindimple - Mar 31, 2013 at 7:41 AM

So you lambasted the Pens fan for making a playoff series prediction, them end your post by making a playoff prediction.

All I can do is shake my head at the stupidity of my fellow citizens.

  8. whammy71 - Mar 31, 2013 at 8:23 AM

and to all the Cryer fans that think their squad is going to squeak into the 8th seed… might only be 4 points out….but no way you jump 6 teams. Get out your golf clubs and hit the driving range….golf season starts in a month for Claudia Gayrioux and his band of misfit gingers. WHAMMY!!!!!

And even if they did make it – I’d relish the chance to put Filthy in a sleeper hold and choke ’em out in 4. Some player Gayrioux is – he needed a 41 year old douche bag on his wing to put up numbers last season. WHAMMY!!!!!

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 31, 2013 at 9:58 AM

shammyshine71 when Iam at the driving range will you shine my balls SHAMMY!

      • drone501 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:42 AM

philly fans and bruin fans in bed together. guess theres power in numbers lol.
