Flyers injury update: Coburn has separated shoulder, surgery of Meszaros

The bad news continues to pile up for the Philadelphia Flyers.

The team updates that Braydon Coburn‘s upper-body injury from Thursday is actually a separated shoulder, leaving him out indefinitely. It’s unusual for Coburn to deal with such an issue; he’s only missed eight games since 2007.

If that wasn’t enough, fellow defenseman Andrej Meszaros will have season-ending shoulder surgery on April 2. He’s been limited by that issue in 2013 and finally decided to go under the knife.

In other injury news, there’s nothing positive to update about other banged-up Flyers Nicklas Grossmann and Danny Briere.

It seems more and more like this is a lost season for Philly.

Wow. When it rains it pours in Philly. Operation ‘dive for draft’ is in full swing now. Unintentional all be it, but nonetheless in operation.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 29, 2013 at 8:35 PM

Yes, if it was intentional we would be the Penguins.

      • whammy71 - Mar 29, 2013 at 11:40 PM

The Band of Misfit Gingers is in the process of “Tank to Bank”…Operation #1 Draft pick. Still won’t help your sorry franchise. The GM and management team is about as smart as the locals! WHAMMY!!!!!!

      • sportsfaninyyc - Mar 29, 2013 at 11:51 PM

        True dat!

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 30, 2013 at 12:00 AM

In order to get Popeye Jones’ kid maybe we can get Bettman to arrange a secret closed door lottery like he did in 2005 for the Hens. All we have to do is arrange or Ed Snyder to suck off Gary like Mario did.

      • whammy71 - Mar 30, 2013 at 12:11 AM

I see that broadstreetMEATbeater is living out his real life fantasies in PHT. Bet you a hundo Pens have a better record than the Cryers next year! But then again – yinz are nothing but NYC wanna tools who probably squelch on their bets.

      • drone501 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:06 AM

you guys would even screw that up.

    • holeecowman - Mar 30, 2013 at 7:24 AM

at least its not bankruptcy how many time did the flyers file for it oh thats right NONE.

    • coronakid76 - Mar 30, 2013 at 8:48 AM

But Didn’t they change the draft format for this year? I think all the teams that don’t make the playoffs have the chance to land the #1 pick. Doesn’t matter though…..we are waaaay beyond a #1 pick saving this franchise. They just need to blow up and start over. Trade some vets for prospects to teams that will make the playoffs and have a chance. Timmo, Brier, Gagne, Coburn, Mezaros, Talbot etc. etc. etc for whomever they can get…….It definitely wont be worse then what we have in the minors right now…..Gotta rebuild from within, not through someone elses’ club.

  2. swadehoo - Mar 29, 2013 at 8:31 PM

As a Flyers fan, I just want this season over. I would say lose out to get the first pick, but I remember how it worked out last time, so win all you can. Last night my boys squeezed out a point, which is more than I can say for this pointless season.

  3. mclovinhockey - Mar 29, 2013 at 8:39 PM

Lets see Philly has huge defensive problems.. Lets say they get the first overall pick. Bet they don’t draft jones…. Just like they skipped over Malcom Subban

  4. mclovinhockey - Mar 29, 2013 at 8:45 PM

@broadstreet, I am pretty sure the only people who knew the pens sat healthy players who were good the year AO and Malkin were in the draft are pens fans prior to 05…

The flyers should use this time to develop some of the prospects on D. I know we called up Ollie which should be nice but we are going to need a few more to finish out the year.

    • whammy71 - Mar 29, 2013 at 11:43 PM

Pens didn’t tank to the bank in 05. That just plain sucked!!!!

They tanked to the bank in 83 for Mario. Who would blame them. Montreal offered Eddie Johnson any 5 players on his roster for the right to draft Mario #1. Toronto offered all their picks for the Pens #1.

Yes – Pens tanked – they even sent their starting goalie to the minors with 10 or so games left.

Better yet – EJ drafts Mario – leaves and goes to Hartford….trades all his good players to Pens….then comes back to Pens! ha ha ha ha ha!!!!! I love it!!!!

      WHAMMY!!!!!!

  5. wisdomnfl - Mar 29, 2013 at 8:48 PM

Flyer fans still obsessed with Pens. I know it is hard, but you’ll be okay. Here’s some warm milk, now go to bed. Sweet dreams.

    • sheckyrimshot - Mar 29, 2013 at 8:58 PM

you forgot to say 1975, jizzbelcher

  6. flyers22 - Mar 29, 2013 at 8:50 PM

at this point its better to just let the season play out hopefully get a top 3 pick and retool a little in the offseason this team has a very good core to build around they will be a playoff team again next season ed snider and paul holmgren dont take nicely to seasons like this.

    • drone501 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:30 AM

the flyers have no more time, no playoffs and no future. but you do have holmgren and lavy. laugh my ass off. you be back in about 5 years. cheer up flyer fans. oh by the way you have the best player in the world. im trying to keep a straight face typing this.

  7. phillyphanatic77 - Mar 29, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Well it’s giving us a chance for a few young guys to play. Heard they called up Lauridsen, the 6’6″ dane. Probably will never be more than a 6th defenseman but it’ll be nice to see what he has. And Gustafsson is already playing minutes. It would be nice to see Brandon Manning get some NHL experience too.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 29, 2013 at 9:26 PM

Agreed. I think Manning is gonna be awesome in a couple of seasons with the big club. Defensively sound and was a ppg player as a Dman Chilliwack. huge upside to this kid in the future.

      • whammy71 - Mar 29, 2013 at 11:57 PM

Manning may be good…..but not as good as whoever the Pens call up….cause Flyers suck and Penguins rule!!!!!! WHAMMY!!!!!!

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 30, 2013 at 12:27 AM

The Hens should call you up whammyinyoura$$. I hear Cindy needs a new fluffier.

      • whammy71 - Mar 30, 2013 at 12:54 AM

        enjoy your 13 wins!!!! WHAMMY!

  8. jeremyroenickdanceparty - Mar 29, 2013 at 9:07 PM

I just hope the organization doesn’t do something stupid like trade away Cooter or B. Schenn for a short-term fix. Accept that the season is done and start prepping for next year.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 29, 2013 at 9:31 PM

I wonder if Poile still wants Couts and B Schenn plus picks for Weber.

  9. bobhpine - Mar 29, 2013 at 9:13 PM

If these people don’t hate on the Penguins then what are they left with? The cold hard reality that their team is horrendous and hasn’t won a cup since before disco music was invented. I am amused by it. They deserve their misery. They are hateful, awful, unsophisticated sub human Neanderthals who live vicariously through their sports teams that they just boo and complain about whenever they finally stop spewing their garbage at other teams that they hate.

Anyway, how awesome is it that we have Iginla!

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 29, 2013 at 9:26 PM

You are the ultimate dbag. Listen to yourself… we’re the hateful ones? Seriously dude you’re on a Flyers page simply to insult the entire population of Philadelphia. Get off your high horse, you’re being a jackass. We’re trying to talk hockey here and you wanna call us “subhuman neanderthals”. “When they finally stop spewing their garbage at other teams that they hate”, look at what YOU’RE doing. Quit being a hypocrite and bring something of substance to the table. You’re a Flyers hater we get it. You never waste a second to jump on the next Flyers page and post the same insulting comments. Take a break from trolling for a day.

      • whammy71 - Mar 29, 2013 at 11:48 PM

you boo Santa Claus and laugh and clap when Michael Irvin almost gets paralyzed. enough said. Philly – you guys suck!!!! Yinz are the a-holes that start all this crap. Now you can’t take it when it gets turned around and thrown in your face. Typical New York City wanna be town. That all yinz are!!!

Yes – I said YINZ – twice – cause I’d rather be yinzer than some Jersey Shore lovin’ NYC wanna be. Enjoy your 13 win season!!!!

      • sheckyrimshot - Mar 30, 2013 at 12:31 AM

get your facts straight jagoff, we didnt simply boo santa claus, we pegged him with a barrage of snow balls.

      • whammy71 - Mar 30, 2013 at 12:56 AM

see, your a bigger bunch of douche bags than I thought. just proves my point that the south eastern corner of the state is nothing but a sewage dump.

      • sheckyrimshot - Mar 30, 2013 at 1:15 AM

        *you’re

        WHAMMY!!

      • tcclark - Mar 30, 2013 at 10:57 AM

I love that our Stanley Cup win in 1975 is irrelevant to Penguins fans because it was so long ago, but throwing snowballs at Santa in 1968 means that everyone in Philadelphia today is a bunch of d-bags…. They not teach math in Pittsburgh?

      • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 30, 2013 at 1:00 PM

Whammy you really wanna call Southeastern Pa a “sewage dump”? Have you ever been to Erie? The whole Western side of Pennsylvania smells of sulfur. There’s a power plant every twenty miles and non-stop fracking… so don’t drink the water! When you’re drinking straight methanol, benzene, formaldehyde, and hydrochloric acid it’s easy to see why so many Pens fans have underdeveloped brains, and thus create their own dialect with words like “Yinz”. Pennsylvania has the most hate groups of any state in the country… and you wanna know where they’re located? Out in the boondocks of Western Pa (which is basically the entire Western half), where everyone is so inbred it’s amazing they can even tell the difference between black and white. It’s a dump. There’s NOTHING there, which is why Pens fans are so suddenly enamored with their team over the past seven years. It finally gives them something to focus on besides making meth. Western Pennsylvania is pockmark on the face of this country. It might as well just be absorbed into West Virginia because there’s no difference.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 29, 2013 at 9:30 PM

Enjoy your 3rd first round exit in 3 years. I love the hype surrounding your team. It will make your defeat all the more delicious. Cheers Piney.

      • upyoursnfu - Mar 29, 2013 at 10:02 PM

Enjoy not winning the cup for 3 decades and counting…..cry on boy cry on

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 29, 2013 at 10:39 PM

Yup, you’ve had 3 cups and 3 bankruptcies and about a dozen losing seasons since our two back to back cups.

    • coronakid76 - Mar 30, 2013 at 9:07 AM

Weren’t the penguins favorites last year? They have major Goaltending issues. Fleury is a head case letting in the soft goals and Vokoun best days are behind him. They run into a hot opposition goaltender and they are finished before they start.

  10. thehighcountrybear - Mar 29, 2013 at 9:27 PM

Hell, I can’t see Iginla’s deep, nay, unfathomable winning tradition honed and polished in Calgary doing anything but enhancing this week’s winner of the Stanley Cup, the Pittsburgh Penguins…?

I’ve seen some interviews featuring Penguins since the trade of the century…talk about lukewarm?

Shero’s lynching party should be convening by mid May…book a noose now!

    • theageofquarrel - Mar 29, 2013 at 9:57 PM

No video accompanying video? You’re slipping Blomfield.

  11. sjsharks66 - Mar 29, 2013 at 9:48 PM

Broadstreet says pens drop out in the first round while his team wont even make the playoffs….

Focus on what the flyers need to do for next season. I feel your pain with the bad trade with schenn. It is like when doug wilson picked up winnik and tj for mcginn and just kept TJ…who sucks.

  12. bobhpine - Mar 29, 2013 at 11:01 PM

Haha. You are proving my point to the absolute T. Thanks broadstreet tough guy!

there are no tough guys on broad street just tough broads.

  13. chazxcore - Mar 29, 2013 at 11:08 PM

As a Flyers fan, I am not optimistic for next year. Unless we are able to trade Briere or Timonen, I am not looking forward to anything for next year. There is a $6 million reduction in cap space. They already resigned Timonen to that ridiculous extension. He is too slow and has become a liability. Briere hasn’t shown up for the last two regular seasons and he has a hit of $6.5 million. The Pronger hit of $4.9 million is on LTIR but you can’t use it to sign any free agents. Hartnell is a no show this season as well and they are paying him $4.75 next year. That is $22+ million for 4 players who can’t play or can’t produce.

They have one amnesty for the next two summers.

I am excited about the youth of the team and they can produce but not without any defense to back them up. Yes, I am excited for a top 3 pick but we are probably looking at two of them back to back.

    • drone501 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:20 AM

as a pens fan doing some critiqueing, first you got to dump your goalie, hartnell has to go, and dump some of the older guys, like timonen, and hope briere could use a fresh start somewhere else. and holmgren has to go bye bye. his lousy trades are a major cause of this cluster,,,,,,,. i would have loved to have had jvr on the pens before all these other trades happened. and bob used to give the pens fits. see what happens.

  14. steelers88 - Mar 29, 2013 at 11:09 PM

broadstreetbeatdown worry about what the Flyers will do in the playoffs. Oh wait you guys are in 14th place in the Eastern Conference and 28th out of 30 teams in the league standings. Plus the Flyers are only 3 points up from the Florida Panthers! HA! Better luck next year!

    • whammy71 - Mar 29, 2013 at 11:58 PM

      YEAH!!!! What he said! WHAMMY!!!!!!!

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 30, 2013 at 12:35 AM

Well I am worrying about what the Flyers are doing this year. Thats why I’m on a Flyers thread posting about Coburn’s injury and you are well..being a typical Fanboy Dbag trolling another Philly thread with your girlfriends Piney Bob and whamitupmya$$.

      • whammy71 - Mar 30, 2013 at 12:59 AM

dude – I’ve read your shat in PGH threads that have nothing to do with Filthy for the past 3 months – so suck off! Again – Philly = a bunch of whiney loser Dbags that can dish it out – but when the going gets tough – can’t take it in return. Wa wa wa wa!!!!!!

you’re as pathetic as the Bruin fans that are crying over Iggy giving them the shaft!

  15. bobhpine - Mar 30, 2013 at 1:16 AM

    Poodles? Such a good one.

Great night for the Flyers as they finally didn’t lose. Superb leadership by G, great “jam” from the coach, no bear in the woods for the weirdo in goal.

Max Talbot is sitting in his garage with the car on, crying about the decisions he’s made.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:03 AM

Kinda like your dad is crying over his decision he made not to pull out.

    • ml3939 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:43 AM

Bobhpiningforattention never misses trolling a Flyers article and wonders why people get personal with him. If there is Penguins article, you comment like a human being or as close as you can get. If there is a Flyers article, you troll like its going out of style. We know, you drink wine at games and think parking passes are mean you are special. We know because you told us. I think most of us could appreciate someone ripping on he Flyers if it were funny, original or thought provoking. Your commentary has yet to qualify in any of those categories. It appears as if you care more about the Flyers than you do the Pens. You are the girl at the bar with your new boyfriend more concerned with what our ex-boyfriend is doing. The next time you see a Flyers article, just walk away for your computer. Your time would be better spent sorting through your skinny jeans.

  16. drone501 - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:32 AM

as whammy says, a top pick in the draft won’t help you unless he’s a stamkos or crosby. you just got WHAMMIED.

  17. bobhpine - Mar 30, 2013 at 2:53 AM

Didn’t Timonen JUST sign that extension? Now he’s getting amnestied? That’s some great management. So many bad contracts on this team. And to think, Shero added two captains and a d-man and still has room to maneuver…after having locked up the best player in the world (not Giroux…ha), a 40 goal man in Neal, his Cup winning goalie, norris trophy candidate blue line Letang…and oh yeah, 2012 MVP Malkin.

Compare that to Giroux (he’s ok, maybe a third liner on the pens), Hartnell (beyond worthless -good for taking penalties though), Briere (small, fragile, past his prime), ten years worth of Ilya Bryzgalov (wow, just wow), and of course 5 mil a year for a guy who won’t play again. Of course 24 year old Sergei bobrovsky was given away and JVR was dumped for another Schenn (which one sucks more I can’t tell), and Jeff carter (he has a few goals this year I think), and mike Richards were also sent away so that they could win a cup.

How exactly is this supposed to improve quickly? Especially when your GM keeps making awful trades and even worse signings. Hey I bet Timonen would take a another year if its offered.

    • coronakid76 - Mar 30, 2013 at 9:13 AM

Touche Bobhpine. Homer grossly miscalculated the talent he moved verses what he brought in. Simmonds and Vorachek were the only positives out of any trades. I would have instilled a Beer Meister in the club house for Richards and Carter so they at least were at the rink! No Alcohol Policy…..How F@#$%^g Ridiculous. we have a no talent policy in management. Bobs, Carter, Richards, JVR are all having good years (Great by our teams standards) and have been Healthy……Bobs was their goalie of the future! Carter and Richards were locked up for their entire career…..JVR was stymied on a 3rd line……Maybe they will draft a D man and have him play left wing??

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 30, 2013 at 1:44 PM

Take off your pens colored glasses for one comment. It’s funny after one season the Flyers are the worst run franchise in the NHL, but if you used that logic no one would be on the Pens level for futility. Yeah Shero made more good moves but you’re giving yourself the Cup, AGAIN. Keep patting yourself on the back while the Pens are winning cause you’re a fair weather fan. Hindsight on moves is always 20/20, so it’s easy to critique past transactions. And just what are you talking about Timonen being amnestied? That’s not even close to reality. Bryz, Briere, and Mezsaros are the real buyout candidates. But the bottom line is you can’t tell me this team is devoid of talent. That’s such a Flyers haters outlook. If this team was devoid of talent they wouldn’t have finished top-5 last season and beaten the almighty Pens. Everyone has underachieved. The whole team. Players have poor seasons, it happens. Sometimes you need a little luck to go with performance. But this team has far more talent than the Habs did last season. And look at where the Canadiens are now. The Flyers will have a top-5 pick (just like Montreal) and they will do whatever is necessary to improve this team. Like I said it’s EASY to look back on past transactions, especially when you’re the ultimate hater. But you always take the easy route anyway, if it requires an analytical approach Bobhpine will always avoid it. Every comment is the same stereotypical, no thought, flyers hate response.
