What record does your team need to make the playoffs?

Mar 27, 2013, 3:20 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers need to go 12-4-0 to make the playoffs, estimates the Globe and Mail’s James Mirtle in his debut “Playoff Push” post for 2013.

The Washington Capitals? They need a 10-4-1 finish.

As for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks, well, the answer is nothing. They could lose the rest of their games and still make it.

Now, obviously, the following are just estimates — the Flyers may in fact need to win 13 times; or maybe it’s just 11 victories plus a shootout loss — but Mirtle nonetheless offers a good sense of how teams will have to perform in the final month of the regular season in order to keep playing into May.

When asked for comment, the Panthers replied…

What are the chances for Columbus?

    • bensawesomeness - Mar 27, 2013 at 5:36 PM

      they’re already in, don’t worry

Haha! You beat me to it Jason. As soon as I saw the Panthers record that quote popped into my head.

Isles have a light schedule going forward. They should have a good shot.

    • trbowman - Mar 27, 2013 at 3:53 PM

Maybe they aren’t playing a lot of tough teams on the road – but only four home games left nonetheless. I didn’t count the Rangers “home” game, since that’s pretty much a home game for the Rags with seemingly 60% (generous?) Blueshirts in the stands.

      • islesjb - Mar 27, 2013 at 4:13 PM

5 games left at home definitely does not hurt the Isles since they’ve been abysmal at home all season.
With their road record right now, if they just had a .500 record at home I’m pretty sure they’d be sitting comfortably in playoff position.

Either way, the Isles are taking it down to the wire and keeping it interesting- sadly, as an Isles fan, that’s all you can really hope for given what they’ve done in the last couple of years. I would be ecstatic if the isles made it to the 8th seed while booting out the rags in the process.

The money you have tied up in Vegas will say Hawks/Pens final, but your heart says Isles/BJs.

Something’s not adding up right. The numbers above are how many games the teams have to win to reach the current points leader in each conference. That’s not the same thing as the number of wins a team needs to make the playoffs.

    • worldseriestiger - Mar 27, 2013 at 3:53 PM

the projection is that 52 points will be the cut off for the playoffs…it just so happens that the Hawks have 53 and Pens have 52, so it looks that way, but it is simply the record needed to get to the 52 point projection.

      • chicagobtech - Mar 27, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Yeah, I read the Mirtle article too. It comes across as “Well, let’s say the top team in each conference is already there and go from there.” No, if you project the number of points the teams will earn strictly based on their win-loss records you’ll find the 8th seeds are both at 53 points (52.5 for the Rangers and 52.6 (rounded) for the Sharks). If this is the case, Florida is already eliminated as they can only get 52 points. And that assumes they run the table. I don’t think Mirtle wants to write anybody off yet, so he fudged the entry point in the East by one point.

    For Wings:

Buddy you’re a boy make a big noise
Playin’ in the street gonna be a big man some day
You got mud on yo’ face
    You big disgrace
Kickin’ your can all over the place

the flyers have a tough hill to climb, but anything is possible but first Bryzgalov has to have confidence in that they can still make it. and stop making negative comments, and focus on trying to win.

  8. chrisvegas - Mar 27, 2013 at 6:26 PM

I just hope the Flyers keep losing so we can get a top pick. Also I hope Bryz keeps stinking it up so the Flyers are forced to buy him out and get a real goalie. Please get Bernier from LA. French Canadians always make the best goalies. Flyers need to fix the D and goaltending. Bryz is awful,

  9. mancave001 - Mar 27, 2013 at 6:59 PM

Give me a break, chrisvegas. Bryz is not the problem. His play has been very good and even downright impressive at times. He was amazing against Pittsburgh. The problem is the defense is hanging him out to dry. Has been all year.

    • chrisvegas - Mar 27, 2013 at 7:35 PM

Impressive? What games are you watching? The guy stinks. He drops down every shot, all teams have to do is go high on him. If you wat to watch impressive go watch bobrosky. When has Bryz stolen a game? He is the worst starting goalie in the NHL
