Video: McBain shoots backwards…into his own net

Mar 27, 2013, 9:55 AM EDT

There isn’t much that’s more embarrassing in hockey than accidentally shooting on your own goal.

Carolina defenseman Jamie McBain couldn’t have felt particularly good after Carolina’s 4-1 loss to Winnipeg on Tuesday.

He helped bury the Hurricanes when he whiffed on a shot and then sent the puck sailing backwards by bringing his stick back to the ice. Hurricanes goaltender Justin Peters, playing in his 34th NHL game, couldn’t handle the surprise shot.

You can watch the play below:

Carolina has now lost six straight games and is six points behind the Southeast Division-leading Winnipeg Jets.

That would be the second game in a row that the Canes have scored a goal for the other team…

McBain’s press conference after the game didn;t go so well either.

    Not again…..

He also was the sad sack that allowed the Jets to get their first goal by whiffing on an ill-timed pinch. If the hurricanes had any other options, he would be riding the pine right now. Exhibit A on why Rutherford is looking for D help.

Nice backhand. Sure fooled the goaltender.
