The Dallas Stars announced today that they’ve assigned defenseman Joe Morrow, along with forward Reilly Smith, to AHL Texas.

Morrow, of course, was acquired on Sunday from Pittsburgh in return for veteran forward Brenden Morrow.

The younger Morrow, just 20 years old, had 15 points in 57 games with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton prior to the trade.

Morrow was taken 23rd overall in the 2011 draft and, like many prospects, has struggled to find his game in the pros. He was a healthy scratch a number of times for the Baby Pens, reportedly due to his defensive play.

Not good when your defensemen is scratched “due to his defensive play.”

Assigning Joe to AHL is the smart play – he’s young and raw and would get eaten alive at the NHL level.

Heard some interesting talk about the whole “scratched because of his defensive play” bit – essentially the Pens asked young Joe to do a lot to improve his game all at once. If they’re a bit more patient they might see some better results.

Was listening to the radio yesterday and the word out of Pitt is that he fell out of the good graces of the Penguins upper management because of his work ethic. Several comments about him not taking too well to being coached. I really hope this is not true!!!
