Don’t ‘flush’ Ovechkin, Capitals away just yet

Mar 26, 2013, 6:00 AM EDT

Alex Ovechkin on Monday had the line of the day. Perhaps even the season, it was that good.

“Right now I’m scoring goals and I’m the king of the world,” Ovechkin said Monday. “A couple weeks ago I was almost in the toilet. You just forgot to flush me.”

It wouldn’t be outlandish to suggest – based on recent events – that Ovechkin, once in the hotly contested debate with Sidney Crosby as the best hockey player in the world, is back.

There was talk early on in the season that the Washington Capitals 27-year-old super star was perhaps washed up – in his late 20s.

He started the season with one goal in the first five games and two goals in the first 10 games. Not flattering numbers for a man who has once in his NHL career reached the 60-goal plateau and done so with incredible flare and determination.

His numbers of late are much more Ovechkin.

He’s scored in six of his last seven games. He has nine points in his last five games. His surge earned him the NHL’s first star of the week. The Capitals have won four of their last five games and are now just two points back of the New York Rangers for the eighth and final playoff spot.

When Ovechkin is going, so too are the Capitals.

“The most important thing for me is the chances,” Ovechkin told the Washington Post.

“If I have like two games, no chances, no shootings, of course it’s something bad with me and maybe our line didn’t work out. But right now everything is working and I feel pretty good.”

    What an ego!

    • stakex - Mar 26, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Its called sarcasm. He was making a point about how up and down the media coverage of him is… not actually calling himself king of the world.

    • kyzslew77 - Mar 26, 2013 at 2:52 PM

If only he were born in Canada, he’s be a “passionate leader” who “wears his heart on his sleeve and leads by example”

  2. steelers88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 6:31 AM

Sorry Ovi Crosby is the king of the world not you. Crosby is way better than Ovichecken.

    • ethanmacleod1685 - Mar 26, 2013 at 7:25 AM

This is why everyone hates penguin fans

      • bgrillz - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:23 AM

MVP, Rocket Richard, Scoring title, Gold Medal(game winning OT goal btw) a Stanley Cup, and all of his teeth. What does Ovechkin have? Goal scoring title and a Winter Classic championship.

      • bohman88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:50 AM

Actually Ovechkin has two Hart trophies, three Ted Lindsay awards, one Art Ross trophy, two Richard Rocket trophies, a Calder trophy, and three golds in World competition. That’s not including the other countless things he’s achieved. You’re right though he’s a bum.

      • blackfoot11 - Mar 26, 2013 at 9:55 AM

Well said @Bohman88. The greatest achievement that Crosby has that Ovechkin doesn’t is the Cup.

      • steelers88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 11:28 AM

        U Mad Bro?

    • leroymond - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:20 AM

Pens fans love to say the Ovi/Crosby rivalry is media generated and doesn’t exist. But anytime I see an Ovi article, they always love to come out and say Crosby is better than Ovi.

      • brianforster - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:56 AM

        you just argued against yourself..

    • rfoster75 - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:36 AM

the king of secondary assist. As a centerman, it’s almost impossible to be on the ice as much as sid and not rack up a lot of points. Pipe down.

      • jpelle82 - Mar 26, 2013 at 9:19 AM

if you wanna start poking at secondary assists, you can point at every other scoring leader in the history of the nhl…really dumb argument guy. its like saying free throws dont count as points or sac fly balls shouldnt be RBI’s. dumb.

      • stakex - Mar 26, 2013 at 11:31 AM

        Thats a good point rfoster.

Crosby is a talented player, but a lot of his points come from the fact hes playing with a very high powered offense and guys who are finding the back of the net like theres no tommarow. If he was playing on a team thats been struggling to get it together like the Caps… he probably wouldn’t be in the points lead right now.

Ovechkins job on the other hand isn’t to set guys up, and the Caps aren’t scoring enough aside from him to allow Ovechkin to pile up assists like Crosby does. His job is to score, and despite how high powered the Pens offense is… Ovechkins scoring more then Crosby.

Considering they play different positions, in different systems, and with different talent levels around them… its hard to compare the two.

      • rfoster75 - Mar 26, 2013 at 11:42 AM

not it’s not, free throws are a part of the game, it implies that you got fouled going to the basket trying to make a play. Sometimes secondary assist are the reason a goal happens. Usually, it’s just a player moving the puck and getting the benefit of having a finisher somewhere on the ice. K guy. This is talked about often, so don’t get your panties in a wad. Besides, he’s one concussion away from not playing again. HE needs every point he can get in his career before he goes away gently into that good night.

      • jpelle82 - Mar 26, 2013 at 12:22 PM

stakex: crosby plays with dupuis and kunitz – two undrafted players who had little to no production prior to coming to pittsburgh. the best linemate crosby has ever had was hossa for just over 20 games + playoffs. ovechkin plays with either backstrom and now ribiero – both highly drafted guys. backstrom has put up 100 pts before and was 4th overall pick. ribiero is a consistent 50 pt guy on bad teams of the past and was a 2nd round pick over a decade ago. while crosby is a center and a playmaker, its well known that he has never been given the luxury of a grade A winger and has consistently made lemonade with the lemons he has been given. it is hard to compare the two which is why i’ve always hated the media created rivalry garbage between the two but ovechkin has piled up plenty of secondary assists and points with the 100 pt seasons he and the high powered caps have had in the past – so dont make THAT comparison. if you want to compare 14 goals to 16 goals – crosby is more impressive with less shots and a better percentage – especially considering ovechkin is not a center and his entire existence is to score goals and 10 of 16 of ovechkin’s goals come on the pp compared to crosby’s 3.

  3. mj1818 - Mar 26, 2013 at 6:37 AM

He means that eats like a king because everyone knows that he is fat and out of shape. He can’t possibly mean a real king when he is being out scored by Chris Kunitz .

    • bohman88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:39 AM

      You’re an idiot

    • tatdue - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:06 AM

What’s with all you Pittsburgh fans here? Are you all really that childish and insecure that you think that every blog is a direct statement about your team? This has nothing to do with Pittsburgh! All Ovechkin is saying (to the media directly that is) is that two weeks ago the media had him labelled a wash up and now that he’s put some points on the board they (again, the media) can’t get enough of him. He’s not making any declarations you morons! Wow is all I can say…..

      • leroymond - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:57 AM

Almost as bad as New England Patriot fans.

  4. kantnockdahustle89 - Mar 26, 2013 at 7:00 AM

Man you guys really hate someone with a personality in the NHL. Don’t take everything so literal. It’s said with a smile on his face.

    • leroymond - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:39 AM

I’d rather Ovi speak his mind during interviews. Do you want him talking like Tiger Woods?…”The ice feels good, the puck feels good, I like our teams chances.”

      • jpelle82 - Mar 26, 2013 at 9:27 AM

he has gotten better, used to be “i shoot puck it go in, we score goal we win i happy”

  5. valoisjoeybfeld69 - Mar 26, 2013 at 7:13 AM

Again Ovi demonstrates he’s a moron. Has he won a SC? Gold medal? The only time he’s a king is when he sits on his throne to take a dump.

    • valoisvipers - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:09 AM

Maybe he wears the crown when he stuffs his pie hole at Burger Kings.

      • valoisjoeybfeld69 - Mar 26, 2013 at 6:24 PM

        :) LOL

  6. steelers88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 7:54 AM

12 in a row baby 1st in Eastern Conference! Man life is good!

    • bohman88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:14 AM

Regular season win streaks mean nothing if you get knocked out by Philly again.

      • bgrillz - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:25 AM

That would be tough to do, when Philly fails to make the playoffs. And if they somehow find a way to, it is likely the “King of the World” will not be in the playoffs.

      • bgrillz - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:26 AM

When you make it past the second round Capitals fans, then come and talk . Till then, stay down little brother. Rock the red!

      • blackfoot11 - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:03 AM

@bgrillz..Understood about my Caps not advancing past the Conf. Semi’s. However, the Pens have not made it past the 2nd round either since they won the 08-09 Cup. You are talking mighty big about my Caps for a team that has fallen short the last three years.

    • rfoster75 - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:46 AM

how pathetic is pittsburgh–hanging on to their SC win like it happened last year. Different team and all…funny though

      • jpelle82 - Mar 26, 2013 at 9:22 AM

gotta love the caps fans holding onto that presidents trophy like it happened last year…

      • blackfoot11 - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:06 AM

Come on @jpelle82. Dont generalize me with the other Caps fans on PHT that might pedal the 09-10 Pesidents Cup. Have alot of respect for your posts, as you tell the truth that some dont want to accept. But this one in particular throws a blanket over the Caps fan base.

      • jpelle82 - Mar 26, 2013 at 11:40 AM

he got me going, i didnt see anyone clinging to a cup of the past here, just a senseless commentary so i gave one back. to call a fan pathetic for bragging about championships is silly – why are we fans if we cant share in the glory of championships and gloat when the opportunity presents itself? everyone wants to see their team win one, we dont sit back in the offseason and say man i cant wait to watch the regular season and man i hope these players have fun while they lose. i could care less if crosby wins every individual trophy under the sun…if he isnt producing cups for the franchise then he could go play somewhere else and do that on any team for all i care. i’m not friends with him, he isnt from my hometown, he’s not paying my bills, and i’m not related to him so all i care about is the time he won the cup in 09 and how is he gonna win another one in his tenure in pittsburgh. if its not for championships then why do YOU watch? the caps will still be there when ovechkin is gone is my point, what do you have to show for his time is what matters….you cant share in art ross trophies or even a russian gold medal (unless you’re russian)…they have victory parades for fans when they win the cup – fans pay the salaries – do you want your money going to harts or cups?

      • blackfoot11 - Mar 26, 2013 at 12:28 PM

@jpelle82. I agree with everything you said. I have been a Caps fan my entire life and seen this team come close many times to a Cup, but fall short. I am tired of the constant coaching changes, roster fluctuations in the wrong areas, and regular season success with post-season disappointments. I just want a Cup as a fan. Well said that player acheivement is good, but championships are the true measurement of an org’s success.

      • jpelle82 - Mar 26, 2013 at 1:08 PM

i live and work in northern va. and have been here since 1988. i have watched the caps ever since, being local but still a die hard penguins fan. i feel like i know the caps better than some of their own fans and i will never forget the nedved 4th ot goal in 97 that sent you guys packing. felt bad for you then and feel bad that guys like kolzig and bondra couldnt get it done as they were great caps. the fans of this new team get under my skin, i guess since i have seen so many ignorants ones pop up lately. i cant take my kids to verizon center to see the pens anymore because the fans are disgusting. i dont take joy in the caps struggles but i do enjoy their fans dismay at times. i’d rather see washington get one before philly any day but i wont feel bad for the fan base if ovechkin doesnt deliver it, as i believe he is the false messiah unfortunately.

  7. capsfan19 - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:27 AM

Gold medals world championships, gold in wjc, won all four major trophies in one season. Only player to do that. Oh we can talk those stats. He’s had a slump, he’s not back to scoring 65 goals… Oh man 65?? But he still is lethal.
Kunitz is only as good as the man next to him (crosby).
Pens fans give it up already, get off that horse

  8. capsfan19 - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:28 AM

Ovi acts dumb to mock you peps anyway PS just ask don cherry

    • bohman88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:31 AM

All of the people that hate ovie would love to see him wear their teams sweater.

      • jpelle82 - Mar 26, 2013 at 9:23 AM

no thanks, we have the better russian on our team already

  9. rockthered1286 - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:31 AM

I love when people take things too literally. Ovi is saying he feels like a top player again after starting the season struggling. And who can really hold it against him? A new coach. New system. New line mates. No preseason. Thrown into the fire. He’s come on strong, as have the entire team, and hopefully they can still make a playoff push.

But the whole “forgetting to flush me” thing? Absolutely hilarious.

    • jpelle82 - Mar 26, 2013 at 9:34 AM

this was funny, i used to love listening to him talk when he first came into the league too. it was hilarious to watch him try to speak english, he always thought he was being funny but no one could understand him so he was just laughing to himself

  10. malkinrulez - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:52 AM

I love these Caps fans who were ripping Ovie now Kissing his keister. Early on when all were ripping Ovie I said he would be fine and start scoring. Surprise, surprise he is scoring. That being said Crosby and Malkin are better than Ovie

  11. LampyB - Mar 26, 2013 at 9:48 AM

Who cares if Crosby is better? Tell us something we don’t already know. I’d rather talk about ovechkin and the Caps resurgence, thats what the article is about. Pens fans sound like a broken record. And no i’m not a Caps fan.

  12. capsfan19 - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Exactly blackfoot. Malkin is like mike green, always hurt. Ovi is a freakin war horse, and plays through injuries.
What cap fan on here has said anything about presidents trophy? I think after that humilating defeat by the habs that kind of has been forgotten.
“So geno how are you feeling about your performance this season?” Probably pierre mcguire because he has his pens posters all over his room.
“I am make score goal”-greatest malkin quote ever!!

  13. lbeezyse - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:04 AM

You penguin fans remind me a lot of Packer fans. Obnoxious, severe homerism, & constantly referencing the past in discussions about the now. Sure, Crosby is good, they’re on a winning streak, & blah blah. But why not give the Caps some credit for their revival & be happy one of the best players in the world is finding his old form?
As a Wild & Caps fan, I know I would want to win by beating the best there is in the league at full strength. (which is the Hawks btw) We’ll see how good the Pens are when push comes to shove in the playoffs when they have to match up with the B’s or a hot team with momentum like the Caps. I can’t wait for the excuses & the dirty play to show its face as it did last year in the Flyers/Pens series.

    • bohman88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:39 AM

Their probably Steeler fans too. All you hear about is what the Steelers did a couple years ago. Whether they want to admit it or not Ovechkin has been his old dominate self as of late. If the Caps can stay consistant they will be a threat in the Eastern conference.

That being said, I always want to see the Caps win the cup, but it’s looking like the west will be taking the cup home yet again this year.

      • bohman88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 11:00 AM

  14. earpaniac - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:29 AM

I’m not a Caps fan, I’m actually a ‘Hawks fan, but I don’t see what the big deal about his comment is. All he is saying is that media and fans can’t get enough of him now that he is “back”. And he’s right.
And btw, I live in WI. NO ONE is as annoying as Packer fans.

  15. rocktheredskins - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:42 AM

Loser Pittsburg fans, do you troll for articles on the great 8 and the CAPS just to post comments about how much better Crosby, Kunitz, Malkin, and (insert player name here) is in your opinion. I know that not all Pens fans are this way, but these tools make Pens fans seem ignorant. We get it Crosby is a great player, the Pens are on an impressive run right now, and your team won a Stanley Cup. The Caps have been playing well recently and OVI is on fire, no denying that either. Seriously though, reading articles about Philly and NYR you see these Pens fans post the same BS there. As much as I like and respect their players and organization, the vocal portion of the Pens fan base that is represented here makes it impossible to like that team.
Good, bad or whatever, the CAPS and #8 always seems to draw a lot of attention from everyone and I love it.

    • bohman88 - Mar 26, 2013 at 10:55 AM

LOL, the Kunitz debate makes me laugh. Look at Kunitz’s stats last year without Crosby and compare them to Ovechkin’s stats. Also, note that Ovechkin had a MEDIOCRE year last year.

Other than that I completely agree with you. What they’ve (Pens) done so far this year has been impressive and fun to watch. The moron Pen fans that voice their ignorant opinion does make it very hard to like that team.

      • lbeezyse - Mar 26, 2013 at 11:29 AM

I don’t know if I have ever seen an objective Pens fan. You know one that would agree that Crosby has equals in the game & admits that their D is horrendous. I am sure they are out there somewhere, but they probably don’t troll as hard as these guys in here today. I respect #87 & what he has accomplished, but his fans & his well known dirty play wreck his image for non Penguin homers imo.

  16. jdvalk - Mar 26, 2013 at 12:44 PM

One just had to look at how well he was doing in the KHL to know that he’s still got it. His main problem has been the soft and offensively anemic team that McPhee put around him this year.

  17. thecrabcakestate - Mar 26, 2013 at 4:34 PM

Wow. I don’t understand all the anger from Pittsburgh about this. He made a hysterical comment without even mentioning your team and you’re all bashing him. He’s still damn good regardless of what you say. The best? Nobody is saying that anymore.

Grow up and learn that, despite the media, nobody thinks the world revolves around Pittsburgh. You have a nice win streak, we’ve had better and look where that got us. Ousted in 7. Seriously though, nobody wants to be king of the regular season.

  18. thecrabcakestate - Mar 26, 2013 at 4:36 PM

All I’m saying is, lets see what the second season brings.(the playoffs)
