Video: PHT Extra — Pens’ impressive streak, Caps’ playoff chances

Mar 25, 2013, 7:09 PM EDT

On Monday, Brough and I spoke with Kay Adams about two surging Eastern Conference teams — the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.

Pittsburgh’s in the midst of a 12-game winning streak and recently bolstered its lineup with the additions of ex-Dallas captain Brenden Morrow and former Sharks defenseman Douglas Murray.

We talked about what was most impressive about the Pens’ streak, and what the future has in store.

Next, discussion turned to the Washington Capitals — winners of three straight and eight of 13 in March.

With the NHL’s reigning first star of the week (Alex Ovechkin) on fire and Braden Holtby providing solid netminding, we answered the question:

Will Washington make the playoffs?

I don’t think this streak is impressive at all ,,,,as per their own fans they are beating inferior non quality opponents !

    • DonkeyStick - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:25 PM

They’ve played almost EXACTLY the same teams as Flyers in the last 12 games except Flyers won 5 of those games

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:35 PM

DonkeyStick were you hit with the Stupid Stick ?

    • DonkeyStick - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:45 PM

      You’re almost 50 correct?

    • chanceoffleury1 - Mar 25, 2013 at 11:58 PM

6 of the 12 games I considered pretty quality wins. 1 against Montreal, 2 against Boston, 2 against Toronto. Those are all playoff teams. And they beat the Flyers in Pittsburgh with Marc Andre Fleury. MAF, prior to last night, had a 1-7 record against the Flyers in Consol Energey Center. MAF and the Flyers at Consol aren’t exactly a winning combination. They’ve won in a lot of different ways, too. High scoring close games, low scoring close games, blowouts, shutouts. They did it all without Malkin and a lot of it without Letang, too, who are probably 2 of their 3 best players.

      • chanceoffleury1 - Mar 26, 2013 at 12:00 AM

That last line is supposed to say “…a lot of it without Malkin and Letang…” not “all without Malkin and Letang”.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 26, 2013 at 6:30 AM

        Not impressed

  2. ironman721 - Mar 25, 2013 at 7:30 PM

    It’s kinda impressive.

  3. malkinrulez - Mar 25, 2013 at 7:32 PM

Winning 12 games in a row in any league is impressive. It requires being focused and ready to play every night . As we have all seen u can lose to anybody in this league if u don’t come to play.

  4. se7enbladez - Mar 25, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Yes it’s one more then the Blackhawks. Yet, the Pens have 3 games in hand and one point behind the hawks. Lets not get out of control.

  5. broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 25, 2013 at 7:41 PM

Its impressive how the refs help them win games. Its going to be be even more impressive when they are handed their third first round exit in three years

    • upyoursnfu - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Going without a Stanley Cup since 75…..now that’s impressive. Cry on….

    • hockeyfan1701 - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:59 PM

What is the most impressive is how broadstreetbeatdown has nothing better in his life but to troll every Penguins article. I guess when your team lets you down for 38 years this is what you have to look forward too.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 25, 2013 at 9:56 PM

This is exactly the second Pens article I’ve ever posted on, unlike your legion of fanboys. Now go back to fantasizing about making out with Crysby

  6. penzfan329 - Mar 25, 2013 at 7:42 PM

Not impressive at all? Bruins twice. Toronto twice and your lowly flyers too. Sounds like someone’s just alil jealous

  7. sjm1717 - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Broadstreetbeatdown…remember when the flyers had three 5 on 3’s in one playoff series (all three over 1:30)? Where was the ref’s help then?

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 25, 2013 at 9:59 PM

Maybe if your superstars weren’t running around handing out head shots we wouldn’t have those 2 man adv.

      • hockeywithdrawal - Mar 26, 2013 at 7:55 AM

Yeah? Well, maybe if your superstars stop…um…oh wait, there aren’t any on that team.

You do know, once the Flyers tank the rest of the season to get the high pick and hopefully finally get their “anti-Crosby” that they’ve so desparately been trying to get ever since 2009, all your posts about how they stockpiled picks will be null and void. Not that you’re all that credible to begin with. Who will it be? MacKinnon, or Jones? And no doubt Homer will think it’s wise to start him on the first D line at 18 years old, and after two giveaways, 10 minutes into his first NHL game, the fans will be in a rage and DEMAND a trade.
        :D now that’s hockey!

  8. theageofquarrel - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:06 PM

Oh look it’s Phithadelphia’s most butthurt lawn coilers trying to make themselves feel better over their crap teams demise.

  9. flyerguy73 - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:14 PM

I am a flyers fan, and broad street, you are making yourself look stupid. Refs helping the pens win? How old are you?

    • JoeAvg - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:58 PM

There are plenty of people on this board who excel at making themselves look stupid.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:02 PM

I guess you missed last nights game “Flyers Fan”. You’re making yourself look like a dbag.

      • upyoursnfu - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:36 PM

Man, do you ever stop whining?

  10. biffnasty - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:29 PM

it is def impressive..gonna laugh when they get bounced 1st round

  11. rockthered1286 - Mar 25, 2013 at 8:42 PM

If the Caps have any chance at the playoffs they’ll have to win the southeast division yet again. Possible? Absolutely. Jets have been lackluster, Florida and Tampa are collapsing, leaving the Caps and Canes as the only possible division winners. From the Caps standpoint, Holtby has been stellar between the pipes, Ovi has found his rhythm, and the entire team is firing on all cylinders. Unfortunately for the Caps they were hurt by the short season- no time to mesh early and not much time to catch up. That and the injury bug that bit half the D may be just enough to keep them out, but here’s to hoping!!

  12. ironman721 - Mar 25, 2013 at 9:44 PM

๐Ÿšจโš Warning we have a troll advisory! broadstbull had been spotted trolling on yet another Pen’s article. This loser is considered extremely stupid. His team is well under .500, next to no chance of making the playoffs, and yet he still cries and talks ๐Ÿšฎ. Do not engage him in direct conversation. Doing so can cause serious loss in IQ points. You have been warned!๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿš“๐Ÿš”

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:10 PM

Use more emoticons next time. You’re doing an awesome job of looking like a dope. Enjoy your regular season success I see your next first round exit.

      • hockeyfan1701 - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:25 PM

A post at 10:10 at night??? Don’t you have a math test tomorrow or did mommy and daddy give you extra computer time tonight for learning such big words like “dope”.

      • ironman721 - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:46 PM

        Broadstbeatsmeat=๐Ÿ’ฉ

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 26, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Awww Look. My internet stalker is making a funny. How cute she even used another emoticon.

      • ironman721 - Mar 26, 2013 at 9:28 AM

Any “man” (and I use that term loosely in this case) that has to insult women to get his point across, is NOT a man at all. Those “men” suck at life! My parents raised me better and I am very proud of that. I am now done with you.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 26, 2013 at 9:16 PM

I literally have no clue what the hell you are talking about. That has to be one of the most idiotic statements I have read i a long time and I now feel dumber for having read it. I don’t recall any insult to women (unless you are counting yourself)

  13. murtdurt - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:07 PM

    Giroux: 1 suspension
    Crosby & Malkin: 0 suspensions
    Your argument is lacking facts

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:13 PM

I guess you missed the skull cracking that Geno was dishing out last year. I’m not even going to get into Neal, Asham, and Adams. Talk about lacking facts.

      • upyoursnfu - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:46 PM

Flyers won that series yet you still whine. Do us a favor and change your tampon already!

      • chanceoffleury1 - Mar 26, 2013 at 12:11 AM

Asham doesn’t even play for the Pens, and he used to play for the Flyers, too. Neal and Adams would rank 8th and 10th on the Flyers in PIMs this season. Rinaldo, Zolnierczyk, Hartnell, and Coburn are all dirtier than Neal or Adams.

      • hockeywithdrawal - Mar 26, 2013 at 8:28 AM

You’re seriously mad that Adams pulled Hartnell’s hair? Is ANYONE seriously mad about that?

I actually was, and still am, mad at Hartnell’s hair.

  14. Stiller43 - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Lol yeah, the OTHER flyers fans are looking like dbags…

Someone needs to look in the mirror.

  15. Stiller43 - Mar 25, 2013 at 10:37 PM

You said “superstars,” and you talk about career 4th liners in asham and adams? Nice job, there.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 26, 2013 at 12:04 AM

Oh my bad, I thought Neal and Malkin were superstars. Slick way to dodge the comment though.

      • upyoursnfu - Mar 26, 2013 at 7:36 AM

What he is saying is that you implied that Asham and Adams were superstars. They are not. They are 4th line players. Damn, not only are you a huge whiner but you are also not very bright.
