Coming from a NYR fan, his skills have definitely diminished over the past few years. He hustles, but he provides zero offensive punch. He does a decent job on the kill but they weren’t getting much out of him. Basically their 700k worth. Hustle is good but he provides nothing else.
Asham is set to return, and believe it or not, he is more capable offensively than halpern is at this point. He also provides more grit and toughness, and can drop the gloves which the rangers can use.
It also points to all signs being that Kreider is going to remain on the NYR roster so they made some room for him. That and they are in the market for a depth forward and PK guy so they might have something in the works. All 3 factors make halpern expendable.
To answer your question though, he definitely is a shell of his former self. He definitely didn’t hurt the team, his PK outweighed a lot of things.

He has 1 assists, a -5 rating, and all of 13 shots through 30 games. Thats pretty terrible for a guy averaging over 9 minutes a game, which is why hes being waived. Granted, the Rangers as a whole are struggling on offense… but Halpern just hasn’t looked good the last few games and his ice time has been falling (only played three and a half minutes last night).

Someone who needs a not awful 4th line center might claim him, but his days as a solid 3rd liner seem to be over. At least for now.

I am a little surprised to see Halpern waived. Being out West I don’t really hear or see much live action involving Eastern teams. Can anyone shed some light on why he’s being waived? Has his play really dropped that much from a couple of years ago? I thought he was still a good utility center.

Seeing as how many teams are in need of a 3rd line center, I’d expect someone to snag him, especially given his (relatively) low salary.
