I dont know, just because guys have technology on them doesn’t mean they aren’t working hard or aren’t dedicated. There are a lot more people playing hockey now than ever before, and when you add in the influx of European players I would imagine it even harder to make it into the NHL now than it was in 1992 so I think its a bit of an overstatement to say these guys aren’t dedicated or hardworking because they have and ipad or iphone on them at work- they wouldn’t be in the NHL if they weren’t all of those things. I also bet many of those older players would be doing the same thing now if they grew up in the environment which younger players did and i’m sure old timers like Gordie Howe think Ray’s generation are a bunch of wusses for wearing helmets. Things and people change with the times.

Ray is right. I was a locker room assistant for a minor league hockey team from 1996-2000. Whit (he was not called the Wizard yet) actually played half a season with us in ’96 or ’97 before being called back up to the NHL. Rarely if ever did I see any of the boys playing with walkmans/discmans (back then). Mostly it was the goalies trying to get into the “zone.” The boys would typically ride the bike in front of the tube or in the training room. The boys would either focus on the task at hand or talk to each other while doing their bike rides, warmups, or stretching. Music was played over the soundsystem, not through individual devices. I can’t say if there was more comaraderie then than now because I have not been in a pro hockey locker room recently, but I have a feeling back then is better than now. One of the only reasons why a guy like Ray is still in the NHL is because he actually has focused on his craft and taken himself seriously and kept the ice rink a workplace.

OTTAWA — Parents who buy their children laptops as a send-off gift to university aren’t doing them any favours, suggests a new study showing portable computers distract students and detract from learning in lecture halls.

Instead of zeroing in on the lecture, students who brought laptops to class spent considerable time e-mailing, surfing the Internet and playing games, posing a “significant” distraction to both users and fellow students.

Further, the study found a relationship between laptop use in class and a weaker understanding of course material and a lower overall course performance; the students with laptops earned an average grade of five per cent lower than if they hadn’t brought the computers.

I’ll take it one step further than Ray – texting has gone way overboard, period. It’s nice for quick messages that don’t merit a phone-call. Otherwise, pick up the damn phone and call me if you want to have a real conversation.
