I know it seems harsh and I'm not advocated running him over like a deer in the headlights. I liked it the way it was when you could bump the goalie and it would be play on but if you hit him too hard then the players would pile on you. It was governed by the players themselves. I like to see goalies roam but miss the risk factor that is missing when they allowed to roam without the threat of being bumped and losing the puck.

Is this another case of no one here having played the game. He was at least 20 feet away when he turned his head and saw smith was playing the puck behind the night. He was at the bottom of the circle about 5 feet from the boards. The onus to slow down his momentum before getting to the goalie is on him, and since he clearly had enough to that, and didn't do it, then it is clearly an intentional hit.

Thing is, where was Edler suppose to go? Hes coming in full speed, and Smith cut off any possible path along the boards at the last second (watch Smiths legs). This is where a lot of people don't understand the speed at which things happen on the ice. There wasn't much Elder could do... and he has to get his arms up to protect himself. Perhaps there was a bit of an elbow to the head, but its hard to tell if it was intentional.

Also, the announcer is wrong... he does make an effort to play the puck. His missed it, but he did try.

Maybe the zebras should be called in to talk to Shanny at times also.

Wow! That was almost identical to the Shaw hit. The only difference I can see is Shaw didn't pull up.

Elder will be suspended even though like Shaw he shouldn't have been. A 5 minute major and a game misconduct is sufficient.

I'm sort of surprised to see that Edler may face additional supplementary discpline for that hit in addition to the 5 minute major penalty. I thought that the 5 minutes was a bit much although I could see that the refs would call something.

However, I'm just as surprised to see that the NHL hasn't scheduled anything for Rick Nash's hit on Tomas Kopeky. That looked far worse to me in terms of a hit to the head, from the blindside, etc. Has there been any word from the NHL whether it'll review Nash's hit or not?

So he gets hit, is well enough to start feeding punches to guys who have their backs turned, then magically he's too woozy to play?

I wouldn't be calling such BS if this wasn't almost becoming a custom with him The Shaw hit is one example, other times when guys get too close he either overacts on a Shakespearian level or goes UFC, now this one with Edler.

He's worse than Roloson was and he was unstable. One second he's trying to axe you and the next he needs the trainer because he's so injured he can't stand.

A couple of points from my perspective:

- Smith was also injured (and stayed down for several minutes) after the play where Sedin was shoved from behind into him. In fact, Labarbera almost entered the game for him at that point. I don't know why everyone is assuming that the Edler play is the which cause Smith to suffer his purported (I say purported based on the shenanigan's involving Smith's injury last year);

- Based on the photo, Edler didn't have any where to go. He has the boards on his right, the net on his left and Smith right in front him. Of the three choices, Smith is the only one that is not immovable.

- Smith regularly sets picks and looks to draw contact. He appears to embellish a la Kesler (throwing he head back, arms up followed by a theatrical flop).

valoisvipers, that's harsh man, but I respect your comment because you are clearly mature and have been around the game for a long time. I used to be the guy who thought like you when I played. i.e. hitting the goalie. Heck one time I hit my own brother in a scrimmage who was a goalie. :-) not right dude. anyway, goalies are defenseless and there movement is limited by their equipment. So it's not an even playing field for them, which is why I agree with the current rule, and would agree with imposing an automatic suspension when you take a run at a goalie.

I know we're not supposed to relish other people's misfortune but try as I might, I can't help but roar every time I watch this in replay...

Man did Mike Smith catch some air or what...all that was missing was the county coroner and a pair of undertakers fussing over his remains? Too funny...what a great game, hockey, gotta love it!

I promise you Mike's got a helluva lot more respect for Alex in the here-and-now if he's not in fact in the hereafter?

I can't see this doing anything but good for Canucks...showing a little spine after one of their guys was mauled. I tell you, bet against the Canucks come playoff time to the greater peril of your financial well-being!

I like Anaheim but Vancouver's starting to look dangerous if they can find some spark...Edler's play will certainly put a charge into that charge! Play of the week...

It looks like Alex Edler will be getting an early start on spring break...two games if Mike Smith is not injured, four if he is.

If goalies are able to argue need for exaggerated padding and protection from high velocity shots, how are they able to argue need for further protection when outside the crease? It would seem all that padding would offer protection anywhere under any circumstances...

And, the artificial protection afforded goalies by rules dictating play outside the crease actually makes them vulnerable to random or spontaneous collisions; goalies tend to drop their guard when wandering while expecting protection in a realm habitually subject to unintended consequences, particularly behind the goals.

Had Smith been subject to the same need for care as are skaters, he'd have been more wary and prepared for opposing force as it arrived. He could have slipped Edler's hit, or squared up, dropped a shoulder and laid Edler out even as he was laid-out.

Goalies who handle pucks outside the crease should be subject to the same rules and conditions of play as are regular skaters...

The Canucks will opt for the Lucic-on-Miller precedent rather than the Shaw-on-Smith precedent, if you please.

But seriously, that Shaw hit on Smith would have been illegal even if Smith was a defenseman, Edler's hit was a textbook bump (except the textbook says you don't do that to goalies) so it would be pretty astonishing to see the same type of punishment handed out.

Of course I have little more confidence in the new boss to hand out objective and consistent judgements than I did in the old boss, so anything could end up happening.

I wish we would go back to the days when goalies were fair game when outside of the crease. If you don't want to be hit, then stay in your net. If you leave your net, there should be risks involved such as being hit and not being able to get back to your net in time should you lose the puck.

Edler could have hit him much harder, he let up a little. And Smith was well enough to get up and fight a little and with all the padding I'd be surprised if he is really hurt.
As for the officiating, it looks like the league is turning this into a special teams game in order to get more scoring.

Smith's a drama queen. I think it was payback for Smith belting D. Sedin in the face as Stoner drove him into the net. Elder should have hit him much harder. He merely bumped him but Smith threw himself to the ice and writhed around.....I think we've seen this scene before. The officiating is fast becoming a joke in this league.
