Sutter doesn’t want Doughty to play like Brian Campbell

Kings coach Darryl Sutter doesn’t care that Drew Doughty hasn’t scored yet. Nor does he care that his top defenseman — the one with the eight-year, $56 million contract — has just 11 assists in 28 games. As long as Doughty is taking care of business in his own end and making a good first pass, Sutter will be happy.

The last thing the coach wants to see is Doughty trying to do it all himself.

“Well, if you do that all the time, you’re not a very good player,” said Sutter, per LA Kings Insider. “You’re Brian Campbell in Florida. You’ll be minus-20. And we’ll see you on the highlights, but you’re on a bad team, and you’re a high-minus player.”

Now, we’re not sure it’s fair to put Campbell’s minus-20 rating entirely on Campbell. If the Panthers got a few more saves from their goaltenders, things might be different in Florida.

The fact is, Doughty’s offensive totals have fallen each season since he racked up 59 points in 2009-10.

Points per game:
2009/10: 0.72
2010/11: 0.53
2011/12: 0.47
2013: 0.39

Some of that decline can no doubt be attributed to more defensively responsible play from the 23-year-old. As Sutter said today, “I can pick three or four mistakes out all year. Literally.”

Still, it’s clear Doughty feels he should be contributing more to the attack.

“There are times during games where he forces it where he doesn’t have to,” said Sutter. “It’s like I tell him, ‘Just beat one. You don’t have to beat five.'”

Despite Doughty’s modest stats, the Kings haven’t had any trouble scoring compared to the rest of the NHL. After last night’s 4-0 win over the Coyotes, L.A. ranks sixth in offense, averaging 3.0 goals per game.

That’s what a big contract will do to a young overrated player

Do you even watch any Kings games? Doughty is doing what a defenseman is supposed to do, and playing very well at 20+ mins. a night. Sure, him scoring a ton of points would be nice, but that is just a bonus right now with how Sutter is expecting him to play. Stout defense first, and don’t get out of position just for a scoring chance.

      Pfft. “Hello straw? Meet Grasping.”

Ask anybody who knows hockey at a Pro level (i.e.: actual coaches, scouts, analysts, players, GMs, etc…) and you won’t hear a single ONE of ’em agree with you that Doughty is overrated. Nick Lidstrom? Bobby Orr? … no. Top 10 in the league overall? … yes.

I agree that he is playing much better than his stats suggest but at 7 mil a year I do wish he would score a goal or two.

    Doughty is doing the job!

Puck does not go in some times.

I will take the victories like last night any day!

A great talent like Doughty makes space for others. Teams don’t game plan for Voynov or Muzzin!

    They want to control Doughty!

You should watch Highlights of the Canada Gold Medal Olympics.

Or Doughty’s 4 point (2 g 2 a) playoff game vs San Jose on the Road Win without Kopitar and our #2 center (Handzus was centering #1 lline)

Or His End to End goal against@ NJ vs Broduer in the Stanley Cup Finals.

I which he was Putting Up Paul Coffey #’s but…..He’s not Paul Coffey.

He is however the KINGS Best Defensemen!

Go get um DREW the goals will come.

    Go Kings Go!!!!

Best Dman in the league this season. Doing everything right and winning games. No other Dman cept Keith can say that. But I’ll give it to Drew since he’s playing with a rookie partner unlike Keith

Doughty hasn’t played bad at all , he’s been solid defensively and yeah his numbers aren’t where they used to be but I’m not worried , he’ll snap out of it soon , even though he isn’t scoring the kings are winning so I’m not too worried , but I will say I’m not a big fan of how sutter threw Campbell under the bus , he’s playing with a team that’s done miserable but he’s their best player , if your on a bad team and you get the most ice time yeah your +/- will be bad

    Doughty = Quality !

In addition to being our absolute “best” rearguard defender, Drew Doughty is also “top 5” in terms of the NHL’s best. As the gifted, dedicated, selfless and passionate player that he is, Drew gives his all “night in & night out” for our team … and what a terrific contribution he delivers! Many of you fellow King’s fans will recall last year during the playoffs (ie: against the Yotes I think?) when Drew was assessed with a questionable penalty. The TV announcers were going on about about how he should “settle down” etc, because of his reaction to the dubious call. For me however, Drew’s passionate protestations that night spoke “volumes” about his wonderful “unfettered” character and uncompromising conviction for our cause. I’m just so happy and grateful that we have a “special” player like Drew commanding our rearguard corps! And as coach Sutter says, he shouldn’t concern himself with the goal-scoring business, as that will come in due course. Besides, our vanguard is “bristling” with such a firepower, that it has our detractors now “trembling” in their skates!

“may the excellent player known as Doughty soon come to find himself awash upon an endless sea of goals and joy … inshallah” …
