So Ovi was “underwhelming” when he scored his 200th goal? No, he was doing what Stamkos was doing on a faster pace. For athletes that have an age difference, you judge production based on what each did in a specific time frame. In this instance what Ovi and Stamkos did at 23 years. Your argument is not comparable, and you dont know what Stamkos’ future play yields. He may or may not have a scoring dip like Ovi.

Honestly – I wouldn’t be upset if that was stricken from the record, or at least the last portion was stricken from the record. It’s a really neat feat, but I think the first 4 you listed are SIGNIFICANTLY more impressive.

Maybe I should have clarified:
- By no means do i feel that Stamkos’s (or anyone’s) numbers are artificially inflated by empty-netters. He’s an extraordinary talent, and the best pure sniper the league has.
- I also am not saying that ENG should be worth less than a goal on the scoreboard or anything like that because that would be asinine.

All I’m saying is that ENG’s are 99/100 more to do with the goalie being out of the net, rather than good play from the scorer. In much the same token that guys don’t get credit for the GWG in the shootout, I don’t thing ENGs should be a part of players goal totals. Maybe I’ve just got this on the brain because I had to laugh when I saw the Pens had some sort of DYK on Saturday at the game about our last Short Handed goal… which was a clearing attempt by Craig Adams that hit off two sticks on the way out of the zone and went in the net. You’re telling me THAT counts the same as a Chara blast, a slick move by Malkin, or a wicked Stamkos wrister?

valoisjoeybfeld69: I know what your saying, but we ( yes I am a lightning fan lol) don’t actually have to pass the 8th place team, we have to stay first place in the SouthEast division. We actually have an easier schedule for the remainder of the season compared to the start of the season. So what the Lightning have to do to make the playoffs is somehow jump over Hurricanes and Jets, and hold off the Caps and Panthers. We want the 1st place in the division, and right now its up for grabs!!

the last 3 mins of this game was the tell all. lightning literally held the puck on the wall for 30 seconds in the flyers zone and then brought out the young guns to skate circles around giroux and company to kill off the last 90 seconds. flyers just looked like they gave up with a 1 goal deficit and 3 mins left.

Also, it’s been a short season, but injuries are piling up for all teams, and those young legs and bodies could have a lot of upside down the stretch. Those rookies are getting it done by winning battles, skating around their opponent, and shooting the puck anytime there is an opportunity – basic stuff that apparently doesn’t necessarily take years in the NHL to learn.

Your optimism is skewed by your partisanship (I’m assuming you’re a TBL fan). Either way, you are not considering that TBL has to not only catch the 8th place team, but has to also catch 2 other teams, and they are being chased by three other teams. Other teams ahead and below TBL will be winning games as well. The following article by Ryan Dadoun illustrates what the Caps have to do to make the playoffs;

Mario has the distinction of scoring a goal five different ways in a single game:

Even Strength
Power Play
Short Handed
Penalty Shot
Empty Net

I’m sure you want to take that away from him.

Agreed! I tuned in expecting a great game, but, instead we say some flashes of a good game. As mentioned by mathieug79 below, TBL played well, but, by no means did they play a perfect game, and nor did the flyers. This is a sign that both teams know they’ve dug themselves a hole too deep to climb out of. I think it’s time to face reality and move players now to prepare for next year. They are teams who can use some extra reinforcement to secure their playoffs spot, and push through the playoffs. TBL needs to get younger and Flyers need to get stronger on D.

I have to agree with everything you said except the part where it’s too late to make a run for the playoffs. We are only 5 pts behind the 6th place and 5 pts off 3rd place and 1st in the southeast division. So anything is possible, as for the rookie they have been through the playoffs last season at the AHL level, I would have to think they’ve learned a lot from that experience! We’ll see, Go Bolts Go!!!

Upside: Lindback has been quietly getting it done in net for a string of games, and with the new buzz-saw line mentioned above (Tyrell, Conacher, and Pyatt), and Gudas, and the other rookies, the Bolts are fun to watch right now.
Downside: It’s probably too late for a run, and it’s hard to imagine a squad full of rookies taking them far.

Did you watch the game? This was one of the best all around games the Lightning played this season, this game was fast-paced. Give Tampa Bay credit, Most of their rookies have less than 5 games under their belts. I thought the difference between both team came down to the 3rd line. Dana Tyrell, Conacher, and Pyatt were great tonight, Tyrell probably one of the fastest players I’ve seen in a while, Pyatt battles for every puck, and Conacher almost plays the same way as Marty St Louis. All night long they were first on the puck. Max Talbot was the BEST player on the Flyers tonight as well, bryz also made some key saves. I thought it was a great game all around.

Its not like last years game when we had to wait 5 min for Pronger to pass the puck up the ice, while tampa bay was playing the trap.

Snyder demanded Bryz not Homer. He may have demanded the Richards trade too. I don’t think it’s all Homers fault . This season is a mess and everyone agrees but I don’t think it requires a complete dismantling. Add some pieces in the off season not now in some lame attempt to salvage a lost cause. My guess is those amnesty buy outs will go toward Briere and perhaps Bryz just for his length of contract not his playing however erratic it may be. This season can not rest on his shoulders alone.

Then Flyers are now 0-12 when trailing after the first period…..same stuff inconsistent goaltending, shaky defense, and no scoring from the Brieres and Couteriers who where being counted on for second line scoring everyone not named Giroux and Voracek should think about renting not owning

it was mr. snider’s “never again” ultimatum after leighton let up the most anti-climactic cup winning goal ever that set up the richards and carter evacuation from dry island to free up cap space to sign borat the cosmonaut for a decade. and they got some pretty damn good players in return. there’s plenty of blame to go around for this poop show of a season. the last thing the flyers need to do is look for a scapegoat. there’s too much young talent on this team to just blow it up.

Ovi may have the fewest games played to hit 200 goals, but he continues to redefine the word “underwhelming” with each successive season now. Stamkos, he only gets better. Last year was incredible. This year, his scoring pace is actually FASTER. Barring that one (slight) backward step to 45 goals from the previous season’s 51, he just gets more and more phenomenal every year.

Wasn’t a great game at all from either team. Hartmell gets a dumb penalty, and Malone does the same. Luke Schenn takes a run at Conacher along the boards and fails to eliminate him resulting in a goal. Just to name a few. Both teams were clearly not prepared to play. As I’ve been writing here the announcer on NBC said both teams would have to earn 75% of the remaining points. Actually, I was predicting 70%. He also mentioned, as I have written here as well, making matters worse for them they are chasing three teams. broadstreetbeatdown will perhaps now understand that my ‘Neanderthal math’.

I’ve run out of things to say to justify this teams embarrassing season. More missed chances than I could count and they lose on a deflection out of nowhere. Beyond frustrating, this season feels worse than 06-07. 4-12 on the road, 1-6 when tied going into the third. More dumb penalties, terrible line changes, and opting for the difficult pass instead of the open shots. I know the players are more frustrated than I am, but I sure wish they’d play a 3rd period like they want to win a game. Another embarrassment in a long list of them this season.
