Video: AHL game ends in a brawl at the bench

Mar 17, 2013, 9:56 PM EDT

A Sunday afternoon clash between the American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves and Rockford IceHogs ended with a brawl at the IceHogs bench.

The incident occurred in the final seconds of the IceHogs’ 2-1 victory, when Chicago forward Guillaume Desbiens, finishing his check, went through the door at the Rockford bench. IceHogs forward Jeremy Morin began landing punches on Desbiens, before a massive pile-up of players ensued.

Wolves defenseman Jim Vandermeer, who signed a two-way contract with the Canucks at the start of training camp, ended up getting into a fight inside the IceHogs bench.

The two teams combined for 174 penalty minutes and the incident didn’t sit well the Wolves coaching staff.

“We’re sending all that stuff in to the league,” Wolves head coach Scott Arniel told the Chicago Tribune.

“All that (expletive) that went on there, they have a history of it. Terribly reffed game too. Got out of hand.”

I sat through the entire highlights expecting a lot more.

Disgraceful.. Watch number 9 on the IceHogs go after Vandermeer with his stick while Vandemeer is fighting another guy on the bench. Could care less about either team, but 9 in red should be charged with assualt, a la Chris Fox in his U of M days. Gong show hockey is a joke.

I dont know if you were linked to a different video, but no where in it did I see ” number 9 in red” (Shawn LaLonde). I did see Vandermeer in the middle of the icehogs bench but in that 15 second clip did not see LaLonde. When you start naming numbers and finger pointing you really come off as a whiney tattle tale, especially for someone who”could care less about either team”. As far as Jeremy Morin(19 in red), applaud you standing up for your alternate captain Ben Smith. But, even though Desbiens finished a hard check…you cant really do what you did and I’d get your DVR ready because you’re going to be suspended.!

Look again, while Vandermeer (12 in green) is engaged with Wade Brookbank (15 in red) Shawn Lalonde (9 in red) takes TWO spears at him with his stick. Don’t know what video you were watching, but it’s clear what Lalonde was up to and it was brutal.

My bad. Wasnt looking that far in the background. That was pretty nasty. But taking a second look at what caused it, I dont think Morin actually threw punches but rather very aggressively ripped Desbians off of Ben Smith who was obviously injured as the coaches pulled Smith up and out of it and Smith went straight to the dressing room. Right after Morin ripped Desbiens off of Smith the coaches ripped Morin away but Morin is still getting suspended.

Interesting that the Wolves were whining about the Hogs when THEIR players went into the Hogs’ bench. Incident didn’t reflect well on either team. Morin especially is someone with hopes for a future in the NHL. That sort of lack of discipline didn’t help him.

Screw the wolves. Chicago hates you !!

Its funny even at the minor league level the Canucks and hawks hate each other. This is the second or third line brawl the icehogs have been in in recent memory. Went on the icehogs after the game to check the score and made no mention of a brawl.

Second brawl Rockford has been in this season. This was 100% their fault. You can’t fight someone on the ice when you’re on the bench.

    Vanfoodman,

I must admit, i watches it multiple times and didnt see a number 9 ever pop up around vandameer…even watched vandameer specifically the whole time and didnt see anything

Lalonde launches the first spear at about 4:02 and the second shortly after. He comes from behind Morin (19), who is also behind the bench, standing on a platform above the other players.

      • vanfoodman - Mar 18, 2013 at 12:11 AM

Lalonde is screen left of Vandermeer.

    • esracerx46 - Mar 18, 2013 at 12:25 AM

LaLonde was on the left side if the bench, goes behind most of the players then spears Vandermeer. Vandermeer wasnt involved in the play at all but forces his way halfway down the rockford bench. He got whatever Lalonde gave him was deserved. Looked like Lalonde missed with the first but landed a second.

      • vanfoodman - Mar 18, 2013 at 12:32 AM

Sorry, he got what ‘was deserved?’ While Vandermeer is fighting Brookbank, Lalonde spears him and that is deserved? Where is the logic in that? In any fight being the third person in is considered unfair, but spearing a guy while his attention is elsewhere is beyond brutal.

Vandermeer went after Beach’s head earlier in the game…he knew something was coming his way.

I liked Vandermeer quite a bit when he was a Hawk. Beach has been the biggest waste of a 1st round pick.
