Video: Oilers’ Petry (accidentally) scores for Red Wings

Mar 16, 2013, 1:03 AM EDT

It’s hard to think of a worse feeling than accidentally scoring a goal on your own team.

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry knows the feeling. With his team on the penalty kill and leading the Detroit by a goal late in the third period of Friday’s game, Petry inadvertently banged a rebound past his own goalie, Devan Dubnyk, after a point shot from Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall.

It appeared as though Petry was trying to clear the rebound away from the front of the net. Instead, he put the puck in the back of the net.

The goal, credited to Kronwall, tied the game at 2-2. The Red Wings, who trailed by a pair of goals heading into the third period, eventually won 3-2 in overtime on a goal from Pavel Datsyuk.

I don’t know, getting juked by Datsyuk on the OT winner would be close! Still, one has to feel for young Petry, stuck playing all spangle-eyed against his childhood heroes [ I see Jeff heading to Detroit somewhere down the road ]?

Gotta love the way Franzen lulled the Oilers to sleep at centre ice in OT then, zip stroke stroke juke lean whip bzzzzzt and one gigantic screeeeeeam!

Had to love all the Wings support in the chilly old Chukl! Testimony to good family values in Alberta was the family behind the Oilers’ net all wearing Wings’ gear. Clearly a well adjusted family who treat their kids right…

He’s still rooting for the hometown team I guess.

How does that work as far as his shot %?

Does he get a goal without an attempted shot? Or does the defenders poor play count as another shot by Kronwall?

Petry, the Michigan native had a rough night, first he scores the tying goal on his team then Datsyuk turns him inside out on the winning goal.

I’m entirely ok with Detroit planting guys that secretly plays for us on the other team. Can we get one in Chicago and St. Louis?

Great 3rd period & get well soon Q (ouch!)
Gotta love it when they quote Datsyuk word-for-word: “Mule made perfect play to get me puck. I pick up speed, he deliver it, like mailbox,”
