Video: Matt Hendricks fights Bruins, taunts fans; Caps aren’t happy about being bullied

Mar 16, 2013, 5:15 PM EDT

Rugged Washington winger Matt Hendricks found himself getting mixed up with many of the Boston Bruins. Throughout the game he was roughing things up with them before dropping the gloves with Nathan Horton in the second period.

With the Caps down in the third period on their way to a 4-1 loss, Hendricks’ pesky play earned him a visit from both Adam McQuaid and Shawn Thornton. Who would you choose to fight? He opted for the former and heard all about it from the Boston faithful upon leaving the ice. CSNWashington.com brings us the video.

After the game, the Capitals weren’t too happy with how Boston decided to confront Hendricks. Ted Starkey of SBNation shares this gem of a quote from defenseman Karl Alzner.

“For all they know Hendy had a broken hand and can’t fight. Well, if we would have done that to Seguin with Erksie and Hendy, think they would have let that happen? It’s questionable.”

Matt Hendricks and Tyler Seguin are the same type of player? Right. Coach Adam Oates was similarly unimpressed with the Bruins’ roughhouse tactics as Stephen Whyno of The Washington Times shares.

“We have some big forwards, we have some guys that can play physical if they want to do that,” he said. “But we don’t want to play that kind of game, we don’t want to get involved in their game.”

Hey, maybe these Caps could use some kind of pushback if they’re feeling bullied. Better to show emotion to the opponents rather than the fans.

WoW Man thats right up there with if you can’t run with the big dogs don’t get off the porch !

    • imleftcoast - Mar 16, 2013 at 8:14 PM

If you don’t like challenging guys who are hurt, don’t be a Bruin. Typical cowardly behavior by Boston.

    • rg3isvictory - Mar 17, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Boston, Baltimore and Philthy fans constantly show themselves to be classless and take pride in that. You don’t see that kind of behavior in Washington. I don’t know if its because we have more educated fans or if its a matter of wealth but I’ve personally seen fans correct the bad behavior of people at the Verizon center. The kind of antics that were going on near the glass during that game just wouldn’t happen without a dismissal. With all the young children that sit near the glass can enjoy our games without guttersnipes ruining things. As much as I would have enjoyed Hendricks knocking that Bruins fan on his butt, I’m glad he chose stay classy. Boston could learn a thing or two from
Matt . Hardnosed player that doesn’t instigate or flop all over the ice.

      • orangandblack - Mar 17, 2013 at 7:41 AM

What is it you think Boston should learn from Hendricks? How to be classless and cowardly? You say “I’m glad he chose to stay classy”…..since when is taunting fans classy? Was Tie Domi classy now? Darcy Tucker and Sean Avery? All classy right? And just so we’re clear I don’t like the Bruins, but your statement is a joke

      • georgejarkko - Mar 17, 2013 at 9:28 AM

Yes, Tie Domi was a warrior with class.

  2. valoisjoeybfeld69 - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:28 PM

Pathetic that tough guy Hendy didn’t want to dance with the other tough guy. Maybe next game he’ll want to try Thronton.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:35 PM

Ya know whats pathetic the big bad bruins have always been homers when it comes to the fisticuffs going way back to the 70′s ,the bruins have always been punks in the other team barn !

      • upyoursnfu - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:39 PM

You know what else is pathetic? The Flyers.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 16, 2013 at 6:09 PM

I got an idea, first put some old house of pain jams on , then take your green bruins st pattys day jersey on , look at your wahlburg poster then proceed to smack yourself around !

    • ziplock10 - Mar 17, 2013 at 1:37 AM

You’re an idiot. Whenever I had 2 bullies come at me.. I get 1 from behind in the hallway then 1 in his face in front of all. In the end, they are all punks on their own. This league needs to decide what they are.. The Broad Street bullies or the “Canadian” league!

ME!!! I’ll watch the NFL draft! Tired of wanna be’s!

I’ve watched normal checking called PP’s all year and now I’m supposed to be impressed with the Boston baked beans 2 on 1 fights?

      GROW SOME BALZZ!

      • manchestermiracle - Mar 17, 2013 at 3:11 AM

Balls are tender and easily hurt. Take Betty White’s advice and grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding.

  3. nunan - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:36 PM

Whole reason that happened was bc ‘HENDY’ jumped Horton and punched him in the face before he knew what was happening. What did he expect? Glad to see Ribeiro get pounded too. We learned what type of player he was when he was a Hab.

    • superross - Mar 16, 2013 at 7:53 PM

Rebeiro get pounded? What fight were you watching? I got excited when I read your comment about the fight, but that looked more like a purse swinging contest! Both of those pukes need a good tune up!

  4. bigt12789 - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:43 PM

You think the Caps are a little upset about the fact that David Krejci was their best player today? Did Hendrix really think nothing was going to happen when he went after a guy who’s had a history of concussion problems?

    • bigt12789 - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:47 PM

      *Hendricks

  5. bostonianpride - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:53 PM

Teams need to understand that these Bruins stick up for eachother and if you mess with one of them you mess with all of them! Atleast people can stop complaining about Marchand not fighting his own battles after he gave Ribeiro a good beaten today!

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Take your green bruin st pattys day jersey pull it over your head, then punch yourself in your face !

    • superross - Mar 16, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Yeah it was great the way they went after John Scott! Haha!

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 17, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Great point ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,watch today the bruins will be testy not milktoast like they were in Pitts barn ! Thorton will be off his leash running around like a little bully ,yo sean JOHN SCOTT BOOOOO!

    • rg3isvictory - Mar 17, 2013 at 12:11 AM

Beat down? Wow, if that is a best down to you, that would help explain why The Bruins and their fanbase are quick to cry when things don’t go their way. Beat down, what a joke, completely laughable comment!

  6. nopuntintended - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Hendricks thinks that he can jump a guy like Horton and not have to answer for it? Sure Horts didn’t look like a guy who was ready to fight when Hendricks jumped him.

Alzner is out of his mind weening about bud’s hand — if it’s bad he only hurt it jumping one of our top 6 forwards, and one who has a history of concussion issues.

And then trying to intimidate a fan? Ahahahaha, that’s like being an internet tough guy.

Hendricks is lucky it wasn’t worse because Thornton would have beat his ass even better than McQuaid did.

Also: nice to see Ribeiro get his face pummeled too. At least that was top6 vs top6. Imagine if Thornton had gone after Ribeiro….is the suggestion from Alzner that the Caps wouldn’t have stood up for him? Farcical.

    • nopuntintended - Mar 16, 2013 at 6:01 PM

Also what a joke of a quote from Alzner….. his comparison of Thornton and McQuaid going after Hendricks ….. to Hendricks and Erskine going after Seguin.

      Almost the exact same thing.

    • trick9 - Mar 16, 2013 at 7:33 PM

”Thornton would have beat his ass even better than McQuaid did”

Wow what fight where you watching? Hendricks landed 2 big ones on McQuaid who didn’t land a single good one. Easily edge to Hendricks.

    • rg3isvictory - Mar 17, 2013 at 12:23 AM

So Hendricks is a bully now? God your fan base is such a bunch of whiners!!! Hendricks nor any other non Bruin cares that Horton has had concussion problems in the past! Bruins have two of the biggest punks in the NHL and are quick to cry bully! Bruins have chronic floppers but whine to the media when PK gives them a taste of their own medicine. These are the same fans that used every racial comment they could dream up after Ward ended their playoff run. Child Please!!!

  7. jpelle82 - Mar 16, 2013 at 5:57 PM

he has fought everyone on the bruins except thornton – mcquaid, campbell, and today he “fought” horton. wants to be a tough guy but wont throw down with a real tough guy anymore. he fought guys like brown, jackman early in his career and i remember him getting whooped bad by several other guys too…sean avery come to mind. he picks carefully now i guess and has a history with mcquaid, still a lousy move

  8. mpops86 - Mar 16, 2013 at 6:06 PM

That’s the most pathetic argument (and video clip) I’ve seen from the NHL in a long time. It doesn’t even make sense.

Hendricks wasn’t good enough to stick with the Bruins when they drafted him, no surprise he’d show up on an inferior team.

  9. jasol20 - Mar 16, 2013 at 6:28 PM

This whole thing is pretty ridiculous. Comparing Hendricks playing his role as an agitator to Tyler Seguin? Alzner should know that comment just makes him look foolish. Oates says they didn’t want to play into that style of game? Yes they did, that’s exactly why Hendricks played the way he did all game. The Caps wanted to play that style, they just got beat at it. I would have more respect for the organization after this game if they just shut their mouths about it. You don’t want to play that kind of game? Maybe they should reconsider, seeing as laying flat got them a 4-1 beating on the scoreboard, too.

  10. hockeyflow33 - Mar 16, 2013 at 6:55 PM

The Caps don’t play a skill game and apparently aren’t playing a physical game because they don’t want to? I don’t really understand what Oates is saying

  11. bgrillz - Mar 16, 2013 at 7:23 PM

This is one of the most whiney sensitive teams in the league. Nut up girls!

    • sabatimus - Mar 16, 2013 at 7:29 PM

      Quit insulting girls.

  12. sabatimus - Mar 16, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Cry me a river Hendricks. And Alzner: I truly didn’t think you were that stupid.

    • trick9 - Mar 16, 2013 at 7:35 PM

Nice comment. Why would Hendricks cry after first easily pounding Horton and later on giving McQuaid a ride for his money aswell. Good for McQuaid on standing up for his teammate but he lost that fight to much smaller man.

      • jasol20 - Mar 16, 2013 at 7:41 PM

Um…. what fights were you watching?

      • sabatimus - Mar 17, 2013 at 12:02 AM

I don’t know why Hendricks would cry. Why don’t you ask him?

    • rg3isvictory - Mar 17, 2013 at 12:31 AM

Hendricks hammered to whiners without much issue. It was nice to see Horton bleeding and nearly crying. Bruins live in constant contradiction. Want to be known as tuff guys while constantly complaining!

  13. titansbro - Mar 16, 2013 at 8:05 PM

Hendricks got early punches on both guys because he jumped them. McQuaid wasn’t trying to fight because he thought Hendricks might actually be tough enough to fight Thornton but he instead turned to McQuaid who looked surprised to me. But both Horton & McQuaid turned those fights around real quick.

gotta love the selective memory of the Caps.

and warrior?? that’s the last word I’d use to describe Hendricks today.

  16. arbruins - Mar 16, 2013 at 9:47 PM

Great game…Washington should have stayed on the porch!

  17. phlyerzpwnu - Mar 16, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Man Hendricks got his you know what kicked! Listen to these dummy announcers talking like Hendricks is the toughest guy out there! Joe B and Laughlin are such a joke, what homers, man they are awful! McQuaid dominated him. Sit down and shut up Hendricks!

    • ravenscaps48 - Mar 16, 2013 at 10:08 PM

And Jack Edwards isn’t a homer? That’s why they’re REGIONAL BROADCASTERS! Wouldn’t you want your favorite teams’ announcers to lean towards them? When they don’t, they’re Pierre McGuire and Doc Emerick and all over Crosby’s nuts

      • phlyerzpwnu - Mar 16, 2013 at 10:34 PM

Oh man Jack Edwards is one of the worst! But at least he is funny…Joe B is just an idiot. Nobody is as bad as Paul Steigerwald though! Oh jeez!! Doc Emerick is awful, every shot is almost a goal in his eyes!
I love listening to regional broadcasters and hearing how much they lean to their team…but Joe B and Locker are completely blind to anything bad relating to the Caps. I don’t want that at all for my favorite teams announcer…I want them to be subjective and open to criticizing bad play. Rooting for them and leaning towards, absolutely. But being stupid about it, no way! When was the last time you heard them bash Ovi for his lackluster play? They don’t, they continue to dub him the great 8 and exclaim that he can do no wrong. At least when Malkin sucked in 2010, Steigerwald would complain about his lack of focus. I don’t want the announcer to pretend like my guy held his own in a fight, when he clearly got his but kicked!

      • ravenscaps48 - Mar 16, 2013 at 10:41 PM

They can’t bash Ovechkin. Leonsis will get upset! And we don’t want Uncle Teddy upset!….. God. I wish he’d just sell the team!

      • drewzducks - Mar 16, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Ovi was on the ice today ? I thought he was a healthy scratch. Edwards wants to be the Tom Heinsohn of the Bs without the street cred. At least Brickley is relatively neutral, while being arguably the best color guy in the league. Although I do on occasion pine for the incoherent rumblings of Turk Sanderson.

  18. drewzducks - Mar 16, 2013 at 10:46 PM

Ramblings…though I guess with him rumblings will suffice.

  20. mornelithe - Mar 17, 2013 at 4:32 AM

If the Caps aren’t happy, they should probably take a look at what Hendricks had been doing all game which resulted in this. Haven’t seen antagonizing like that since a Canadians or Canucks game. He’s a scrappy dude that’s for sure, but he wasn’t getting off that ice without a fight. Was funny to watch unfold.

  21. prosportswashington - Mar 17, 2013 at 6:50 AM

Anybody questioning Hendricks’ toughness has never watched a Caps game in their life, he takes all comers, bearing in mind he is only 5’11 and 205 (give or take) and fights ANYBODY who challenges

    • foodforthesoul28 - Mar 17, 2013 at 7:08 AM

Really?…Why did he not take on Thornton then? Thorty challenged him from the face off and Hendrix went to McQuaid…okay…

    • orangandblack - Mar 17, 2013 at 7:46 AM

Zac Rinaldo 5′ 11” and 175 (give or take) faught Thorton (he got his a$$ beat, but at least he answered the bell, more than hendricks can say)

      • ken1313 - Mar 17, 2013 at 10:07 AM

The Bruins play a physical but CLEAN game. The fact that teams come in and try to out-physical them…or taunt them into fights (which is exactly what Hendricks was doing the first half of the game)….and then cry when their players get their asses handed to them…is a joke. The Bruins have a lot of tough players….and alot of finesse players. They have the right kind of mix needed to contend in today’s NHL. Hendricks FOOLISHLY thought he was gonna get off easy by choosing McQuaid (who is actually a better fighter than Thornton). But he was running around taking shots at Bruins players all game…….he got what he asked for……. Look in the mirror Capitals…don’t become the Montreal Canadiens and complain that people are playing HOCKEY and not basketball out there,

  23. kantnockdahustle89 - Mar 17, 2013 at 10:26 AM

How come no one is talking about Marchand jumping on Riberio? Hendricks jumped Horton and same for Marchand. Who cares.

You also miss the point of what Hendricks did. Thornton came after him but he fought McQuaid therefore taking 2 guys to the box. He also fought Horton because he is a top player. If he fights Thorton or someone else, its a wash. He takes a top forward then its a good move.

    • ryanw822 - Mar 17, 2013 at 10:52 AM

If Hendricks wants to fight another top player to make it a “wash”, dont jump the guy coming off 2 concussions.

He could always take a run at Lucic. HAHAHA, we know that wont happen.

      • obnoxiousDCfan - Mar 18, 2013 at 11:24 AM

I’m sure in that situation no hockey player doesn’t give a sh!t about how many concussions another guy has had.

“Hey bro, before we drop ‘em, how many concussions have you had?”

        Please
