Kronwall has about a dozen legal hits superior to that one on Kaleta. Either of the big ones from the 2010 Sharks series, or the cruncher on Havlat back in 2009 would do the trick.

There are some holdouts for the “good old days” when some “fans” enjoyed seeing more blood on the ice than skillful play (see wicky’s thoughtful insights above), but, like society, you often have to wait for the old generation to die off in order to cleanse an organization of outdated policies.

Good to see that most commenters find no joy in watching some of these “Hits”. Watching Paul Kariya fly up and down the ice, was much more enjoyable than watching Stevens stick his elbow in someone’s ear. Maybe the culture of the game is changing. The goal of hitting should be to get the player off the puck. It should not be to put the player on IR.

Have to say I have a problem with the video. The NHL has made significant rule changes to outlaw half of the hits shown. By labeling these the top 10 hits from the league over the years, you’re promoting illegal plays that have injured players and are condemned by the league.

I agree. I’m all for a big hit, but I wasn’t really interested in 7 major concussions in 15 secs or less. Why not the hit when Brooks Orpik sending Daniel Paille flying a couple of years ago, for example – a fantastic hit everyone walked away from?

Every once and a while I remember some of my HIgh School playing days and I wonder if I’d worked a little harder if I could have made it to the AHL or NHL… then I see a video like this and remember that, no, I could not have. Those are some MASSIVE hits.

A little disappointed that the Stevens/Kariya hit is on here. That would be a suspension now. A long suspension. Lindros hit a different story as he still had the puck. It was legal back then but, Stevens sure made a name for himself with targeting the head. Two great players, who had their carreers shortened by concussions.
