Video: Top 10 hits of past several years

Mar 14, 2013, 8:02 AM EST

Remember the time goaltender Dominik Hasek took out Marian Gaborik?

Every season has plenty of highlight reel hits and NBCSN has compiled the top 10 of the last several years. Some of these hits are unusual situations while others simply level their opponents.

You can watch the countdown below:

    • jpelle82 - Mar 14, 2013 at 11:31 AM

      shouldve been orpik on paille….

      • ibieiniid - Mar 14, 2013 at 11:44 AM

How about the great late Boogeyman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s49YT-jhHVs

Lot of better hits this season. Makes me wonder if NBC really understands the sport.

A little disappointed that the Stevens/Kariya hit is on here. That would be a suspension now. A long suspension. Lindros hit a different story as he still had the puck. It was legal back then but, Stevens sure made a name for himself with targeting the head. Two great players, who had their carreers shortened by concussions.

    • ibieiniid - Mar 14, 2013 at 9:20 AM

i mean the Lindros one was pretty clearly an elbow to the head… which I don’t think was legal, even back then. if that’s #1, they shoulda just made this the “Best dirty hits of all time” list.

      • ibieiniid - Mar 14, 2013 at 9:22 AM

correction: best dirty hits of an unspecified time frame. lol this was a stupid best-of.

    • bmscalise - Mar 14, 2013 at 9:42 AM

I agree. I’m all for a big hit, but I wasn’t really interested in 7 major concussions in 15 secs or less. Why not the hit when Brooks Orpik sending Daniel Paille flying a couple of years ago, for example – a fantastic hit everyone walked away from?

Can’t watch this, because you guys won’t make it compatible with Ipad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. steelpenbucs87 - Mar 14, 2013 at 9:24 AM

Every once and a while I remember some of my HIgh School playing days and I wonder if I’d worked a little harder if I could have made it to the AHL or NHL… then I see a video like this and remember that, no, I could not have. Those are some MASSIVE hits.

  5. jennettalia - Mar 14, 2013 at 9:31 AM

Can’t remember the hit, but I remember last season, one of the Bruins sent a guy flying. I was expecting that to make it.

    • jpelle82 - Mar 14, 2013 at 11:34 AM

      • jennettalia - Mar 14, 2013 at 2:09 PM

That’s it! I had it backward.

  6. wicky888 - Mar 14, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Too bad the game has been wussified and 7 of those 10 hits are suspension worthy offenses

    • manchestermiracle - Mar 14, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Yeah, last thing we all want is talent to be allowed to play instead of being hospitalized.

      • wicky888 - Mar 14, 2013 at 10:05 AM

It appears some of the fans have been wussified as well

    • ibieiniid - Mar 14, 2013 at 10:05 AM

      checking the Wicktionary:

wussify – (v.) to make players safer. to elongate careers. to attempt to help concussion sufferers not kill themselves after they retire.

      • tfaltin - Mar 14, 2013 at 2:45 PM

Wicky’s favorite player is Matt Cooke, he plays the game to Wicky’s standards. Just ask Marc Savard. Classic wuss…

…Or unfair victim of a massive head injury from a goon nobody enjoys watching play.

  7. manchestermiracle - Mar 14, 2013 at 10:01 AM

Disappointing compilation. At least one interference (puck long gone, #5 I think) and a couple of head-hunting suspensions-coming plays.

  8. tfaltin - Mar 14, 2013 at 10:19 AM

Have to say I have a problem with the video. The NHL has made significant rule changes to outlaw half of the hits shown. By labeling these the top 10 hits from the league over the years, you’re promoting illegal plays that have injured players and are condemned by the league.

  9. mnhockeyfan - Mar 14, 2013 at 10:33 AM

How kind of you to insult our intelligence, NBC. This nonsense, in much the same vein as the NFL ‘Jacked Up’ compilations, only serves to highlight the concussion and injury problem in the NHL.

I hope you get a phone call from Shanahan, much like that other network did from the football commish.

  10. jimmywho14 - Mar 14, 2013 at 11:23 AM

That hit pretty much ruined the rest of Lindros’s carrer

  11. tlndma - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:07 PM

Good to see that most commenters find no joy in watching some of these “Hits”. Watching Paul Kariya fly up and down the ice, was much more enjoyable than watching Stevens stick his elbow in someone’s ear. Maybe the culture of the game is changing. The goal of hitting should be to get the player off the puck. It should not be to put the player on IR.

    • manchestermiracle - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:42 PM

There are some holdouts for the “good old days” when some “fans” enjoyed seeing more blood on the ice than skillful play (see wicky’s thoughtful insights above), but, like society, you often have to wait for the old generation to die off in order to cleanse an organization of outdated policies.

  12. jeffchadwick - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:45 PM

Kronwall has about a dozen legal hits superior to that one on Kaleta. Either of the big ones from the 2010 Sharks series, or the cruncher on Havlat back in 2009 would do the trick.
