PHT Morning Skate: Where we talk injuries, slumps

Mar 13, 2013, 7:15 AM EDT

Mike Green AP

PHT’s Morning Skate takes a look around the world of hockey to see what’s happening and what we’ll be talking about around the NHL world and beyond.

Philadelphia Flyers forwards Danny Briere and Sean Couturier, who are both on prolonged goal scoring slumps, have been paired up with Simon Gagne. Briere and Couturier have been frequently moved in the depth charts this season, so we’ll see if this combination proves to be the answer to their woes. (CSN Philly)

Boston Bruins forward Chris Kelly didn’t play Tuesday night due to a lower-body injury sustained during Chris Neil‘s knee-on-knee hit in Monday’s contest against Ottawa. He will need to be evaluated further within the next couple of days. (

Matt Stajan recorded his 300th career point over the weekend, but these days he’s focused more on his role as a shutdown center. (Calgary Sun)

Defenseman Mike Green is “still a little bit of a ways away” from returning from a groin injury, but he was able to take part in the Washington Capitals’ full skate on Tuesday. (Washington Post)

Guillaume Latendresse admitted that his recent injury woes were getting to him, so it came as a big relief when he was able to score in his return to the Ottawa Senators’ lineup on Monday. (Ottawa Citizen)

With forward Michael Grabner out for at least a week, the Islanders will need a replacement who is a threat to score. Could top prospect Nino Niederreiter get another shot with the club? (New York Newsday)

Detroit Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula is close to returning from a shoulder injury. (Detroit Free Press)

Devante Smith-Pelly has been sent to the minors by the Anaheim Ducks. (

The franchise never gives up. Especially not to a bunch of hacks like the Bruins and that scrub goalie they tried to use on the best sports team in existence. This team is so wide and sturdy their pants look like a full scale version of the Great Wall when the national anthem is sung. SCA unite!

As a true Penguins fan, I ask the PHT community to ignore the stupidity above.

Understood and appreciated. Was an impressive comeback though.

As Newsday points out, Jesse Joensuu may be ready to go after being out with an injury suffered in Europe during the lockout. We may see him as opposed to a callup–although with Ullstrom being sent down, it is also possible that Nino would be called up AND Joensuu activated. Carkner may be about ready as well. Could use him on D.

Truly hate the Pens, but nice come-back over the past two games. Haters gonna hate
