Bryzgalov, Flyers shelled in loss to Devils

Mar 13, 2013, 10:23 PM EDT

If one were to dissect the logic of goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, the Philadelphia Flyers are half done.

The perplexing 32 year old was recently quoted as saying the Flyers were “done” if they lose both games in a home-and-home with the New Jersey Devils.

On Wednesday, the Flyers lost the first half of this two-game set with the Devils, and they lost big.

The Devils pumped five pucks past Bryzgalov on 32 shots, in a 5-2 thumping of the Flyers. It seems anything Bryzgalov says and does is going to get a reaction. Twitter didn’t disappoint.

The two teams face off again Friday in Philadelphia. A loss, and the Flyers are done – at least based on what Bryzgalov says.

The standings may prove otherwise, although they don’t necessarily paint a flattering picture. The Flyers are only three points out of a playoff spot.

    Another great game by Sievegalov!

Terrible all around performance by that team.

      More like #freeanthonystolarz

Seriously, they should be just about that desperate by now.

  3. bobhpine - Mar 13, 2013 at 10:39 PM

Another clutch performance by Fraud Giroux, or as Coach Baldilocks refers to him, the greatest player in the world. What a joke this team is. Hey, since Flyer fans care about playoff appearances more than cups, what is the defense gonna be when you finish 11th? How much is Giroux gonna get paid for this great leadership? Maybe they can give him Chris Pronger money. HA,

Oh wait, i can already hear the Flygirls’ retort now…but the Penguins went bankrupt!! HAHAHA.

I am enjoying this three month-long choke job immensely. Selfish, gutless hockey for selfish and gutless fans.

Choke on it Filthadelphia. You deserve it you losers.

bob – Don’t you find it a bit sad that the sole purpose of your post is to make people mad and try to pick a fight over the internet? You really have nothing better to do with your time? I really hope you are under the age of 13 and can just plead ignorance on a post like this…

      • bobhpine - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:13 PM

        U mad bro?

      • govtminion - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:57 PM

I owe you an internet-beer for this post. Thank you.

“U mad bro.” He was raised by Xbox live and lives for talking smack through a keyboard. On a person level he’s an embarassment, not worth a response to any comments going forward.

      • JoeAvg - Mar 14, 2013 at 10:52 AM

I’ve always thought these sites should have a block poster button to filter out the trolls on an individual basis. That way emotionally stable people can enjoy serious exchange with one another without having to deal with the trolls gathered under the bridge throwing mud at one another.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:32 PM

I’m glad you enjoy your own jokes so much douchebag. You know there’s such things as humility and sportsmanship, not that you’d know that, being that you’ve only been a fan since 2008. But go on, enjoy the Flyers futility, in fact, keep up the oh so clever alliterations and nicknames. Revel in the misery of the great City of Philadelphia, but be warned… finding joy in the suffering of others is bad, bad karma. And your almighty Pens may be looking great, on their way to another regular season Stanley Cup crown, but they have some fatal flaws. What, you say gods gift to hockey, the Pittsburgh Penguins aren’t perfect in every way, shape, and form??? Oui “mon frere”, because just as you enjoying drinking the tears of Flyers fans so shall we enjoy watching your infallible franchise fall flat on their faces in the playoffs. In case you haven’t noticed your defense can be just as porous, if not more so, than the Philadelphia Flyers. You have two goalies who don’t mind giving 4,5,6 goals a game as long as Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Letang, and Kunitz put up 7. And not to mention the fact that the almighty Pens have worked blowing leads down to a science. So you may be flying high Bobhpine, celebrating just how great the Pens are and how much of a joke the Flyers are but remember regular seasons mean nothing. The Penguins WILL NOT be able to outscore everyone in the playoffs, and that’s how they’re currently winning games. You can have as many 7-5, 6-4 wins you want in the regular season but come playoff time it’s not there. You have no D, two fragile goalies, and a penchant for blowing leads hmmm what does that equal= EARLY ROUND EXIT. So keep getting yourself off on the Flyers struggles because in a few months, after the Pens inevitability lose to an inferior opposition, you’ll just jump off your annual bandwagon and retreat back down your troll hole. Never to be heard from again… or whenever the Pens are back in 1st place. You’re a fraud of a fan who gets his kicks from the misery of others, just a class act. My final note… go to hell Bobhpine you are still the ultimate troll of PHT.

      • bobhpine - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:11 AM

        Why thank you.

Not quite sure how you know about my history as a fan. I clearly remember going to cup finals game as a young lad against the north stars in 91. Great fun. I also followed them closely when Rico Fata and Konstantin Koltsov were their best players. That sucked. But that is neither here nor there. I don’t so much care about your views of my fandom.

I’m aware the Pens are flawed and may not win the cup; the point is they are MUCH closer to a cup than the Flyers. They compete and win most nights and by virtue of their ability to fill the net, are incredibly fun to watch. I get to see the two best players in the game live a few dozen times a year. It’s awesome. Hockey is awesome. The Penguins have already played a bunch of exciting games, some high scoring, and I hope it continues into June.

Sports are supposed to be fun dude. I have a good friend from Philly and I enjoy testing my material to bust his chops on PHT…see what really gets you guys going. I enjoy watching the Flyers lose because they are the rival of my team. I imagine the converse of that is true in your case. The only reason it’s a rivalry is because the Flyers are usually good….usually.

The point is the Flyers totally suck this year and they aren’t getting better any time soon and that is totally cool.

        Oh yeah. 1975

      • hubeydubeydoo11 - Mar 14, 2013 at 1:29 AM

Lets just agree that Philly is sucking this year and both Philly and Pitt know how to blow leads and screw up games they should win!!!!

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:55 PM

Piney Bob your mom told me to tell you to get off the computer. Our retort is we are making the playoffs and your team will face another first round exit.

  4. jpdoc26 - Mar 13, 2013 at 10:45 PM

I know Bryz isn’t the greatest but he’s not the main problem. The Flyers just don’t have enough talent. Philly fans tend to overrated their Flyers and when things go bad place all the blame on the ‘tender. When Ruslan Fedetenko is leading your team in plus/minus, you know something isn’t right. You need way more from the captain who was poised for a big season. The greatest player in the world comment was/is obviously ridiculous. I think Ed Snider needs to make a move and that move is to fire Holmgren. Holgrem put this product on the ice. Holmgren signed Bryz to that contract, let Matt Carle walk, and didn’t replace Jagr (no Gange and Knuble do not count).

I wonder how different things would be right now if they didn’t blow a 4-1 lead against the Pens. The momentum they actually had disappeared after that disaster.

    • 19to77 - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:07 PM

Wasn’t Homer also the genius who decided he had plenty of adequate replacements for the leadership of Richards?

Because that’s looking reeeeaaaally funny in retrospect.

    • tbbolts91 - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:41 PM

Richards, Carter, JVR, Bobrovsky, Carle, versteeg. Just some players the flyers lost over the past couple years. God that’s hefty

      • 19to77 - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Let’s not act like they didn’t (usually) get a lot back in trades too – Simmonds, both Schenns, Couturier, etc. – but yeah, you’d think they might have been a little better off before than after, eh?

      • tbbolts91 - Mar 14, 2013 at 1:42 AM

Never would’ve thought van riemsdyk would go to Toronto. Look how he’s scoring now, he’s gonna be significant with some time

  5. mclovinhockey - Mar 13, 2013 at 10:54 PM

    Stay classy pobhine

Sorry but a breakaway against the best sniper in the game, a huge turnover in front of the net, somehow these being Bryz fault just make me wonder.

    • jaredphi - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:04 PM

Agreed on the pobhine comment and I’ll try to polish it up with more embellishment befitting of class: You, sir, embarass the fans of your club that are decent and reasonable folk. I happen to know several. I don’t count you amongst their number.

Also agree on being lenient in this outing towards Bryz (the Loktionov goal should’ve been stopped though). The protection, focus and determination from our D are questionable.

  6. jaredphi - Mar 13, 2013 at 10:57 PM

Defense is the problem here. Schenn out sick with the flu hurts and bottom-pair D-men Gervais & Foster were atrocious.

Philly played 20 minutes of decent hockey, followed by a poor outing in the 2nd and a weak rally in the 3rd.

Special teams were satisfactory, but 5-on-5 play was clumsy and careless too often.

I really think a shake-up is needed. I’m starting to side with those that want to bag Lavy and I want a D-man (or two) that can solidify our zone. Time to make a trade.

    • President Charles Logan - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:11 PM

lol did you say luke schenn being out of the line up hurts?, have you watched how bad he’s played this year? wake up

      • jaredphi - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:22 PM

I think you’re the one not watching.

The simple truth is: If he’d been in the lineup, either Gervais or Foster would’ve been out of the lineup, which is an improvement over the D lines we had out there tonight.

While he’s made some mistakes (who hasn’t), I see promise with his continued development. Toronto has a bit of a reputation (sorry Leafs fans!) for impatience and expecting too much, too soon from their rookies. D-men, in particular, often require more time and patience.

      • President Charles Logan - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:46 PM

jared this is the NHL D-men, in particular, are often expected to perform ,, if they need more time and patience then send them to the AHL , the NHL is not a developmental league results are the answer , not excuses and he has been brutal

      • blackfoot11 - Mar 14, 2013 at 2:40 PM

@PCL is right. Teams draft to fill holes in the system and develop the talent in preparation for the NHL. Very few gifted draftees make NHL rosters as rookies.

      • blackfoot11 - Mar 14, 2013 at 2:41 PM

@PCL is right. Teams draft to fill holes in the system and develop the talent in preparation for the NHL. If they cant perform, send them down and find a solution. Very few gifted draftees make NHL rosters as rookies.

  7. 19to77 - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:01 PM

Well, after Bryzgalov’s morale-crushing remarks a couple days ago, was anybody NOT expecting this? The Devils may be slumping, but they’re still a deep, skilled team – and they’ve been kryptonite to the Flyers since last season.

    • jaredphi - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:09 PM

I expected a loss tonight, to be honest.

But I do think chances are better – and I’m more optimistic – for a win on Friday.

      • 19to77 - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:12 PM

If captain Giroux truly deserves to be one, I’d expect a players-only meeting before the next game, and a huge game from him (and everyone) on Friday. It’s not must-win in the standings, but it’s must-win for them as a team.

  8. zappxx - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:10 PM

    Briere-Couturier-Gagne: No points, 5 shots, combined -8.

    How about the Maginot Line?

    • 19to77 - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:13 PM

      HAHA. Superb.

  9. bobhpine - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:11 PM

It’s just too good. Seriously, look at this roster.

A head case, space cadet in goal who has seven years left on a contract that vastly overpays him to suck in big games and say moronic things every chance he gets. Oh yeah and he’s 32. Enjoy Bryz in 2020.

The defensive corp is full 3, 4, 5, and 6 D men, unless you count the ghost of Chris Pronger as a number 1 defenseman. Schenn, Coburn, Grossman, Gervais, Gustaffson, a 38 year-old Timonen? Wow, impressive. At least you got Kimo for 6 mil next year. Or maybe Mez will actually play in a game without getting hurt. Doubtful.

The crown jewel of these losers is of course their captain, Claudette the inhaler. I know he’s the greatest player in the world and everything, but he’s a solid 20 points off of Crosby’s pace a whole 27 games into the season. Maybe when Crosby starts doubling his output Giroux will finally relinquish that title as the best in the game. I don’t know, we have to ask the oddly bald Peter Laviolette to tell us. I think Baldilocks just called another timeout. Good timeout coach.

The rest of these losers are selfish (Hartnell, nice slashing penalties tonight, Rinaldo) or old (Briere, Gagne, Knuble, fedotenko), except for a couple decent players who are destined for a ringless careers (Simmonds, Read, Voracek, Couturier). Let’s be honest though, Simmonds, Read, Voracek and Couturier ain’t winning you a cup. They’re apparently not even getting you into the playoffs. All of this great management has these losers right up against the cap, so help is not on the way. Who knew 40 year old Jaromir Jagr was the glue that held together this fraud. Certainly Giroux knew, since he is now just another player. best in the world? HA. What. A. Joke.

This team plays with zero passion unless they’re playing the Penguins, who, like everyone else, figured out how to skate away from the after-the-whistle nonsense and just beat them. Enjoy it Filthy, the rest of us certainly are. Oh and one more thing.

    • 19to77 - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:16 PM

And the Penguins’ patience and non-participation in unsportsmanlike after-whistle garbage was on full display when they destroyed the Flyers in last year’s playo-

Whoops, confused them with New Jersey. My bad.

    • ml3939 - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:21 AM

Bobhpiningforattention at it again. It seems like you have gotten to a few Flyers fans. I think I can clear some issue up here.

If you guys did not know, bobhpiningforattention is a little bit older as implied through his numerous posts as I believe he has been alive longer an the Pens have been in existence. Bob is also the kind of guy that boasts about drinking wine. I am not sure why, but it is a proclamation he made in a prior post. Bob also is owner of multiple poodles, a real man’s man. It’s a shame this site does not offer posters an option to have an avatar. I would just love to them in matching sweaters. Now you must be asking, why am I telling you all of this?

You see Bobhpiningforattention is a bitter old Penguins’ fan who has endured lifetime of losing to the Flyers. The Flyers are 142-84-30 all time versus his beloved Pens. The Flyers are also 4-2 in postseason series against them. Since both teams have entered the league, the Flyers have finished with more points in the regular season 30 times, while the Pens have only finished ahead of the Flyers 11 times and 3 times they were even. In the playoffs the Flyers have advanced further than the Pens 28 times, while the Pens have advanced further 12 times and 4 times they were knocked out in the same round. The Pens also hold a 17-8 margin in missing the playoffs. Just so you know bobhpiningforattention, the larger number is not the better number in this instance.

So as you can see, in 44 years Bobhpiningforattention’s team has been more successful 11-12 times or approximately 25-27% of the time. Bobhpiningforattention’s team also admittedly lost games to draft their franchise’s greatest player Mario Lemeiux. So all of the successes beyond that point lack integrity to some degree. It almost makes you question the legitimacy of the first two cups. I have no qualms about the third one but if the franchise had played with respectability, Mario would have been a Devil and the Penguins would have relocated elsewhere leaving the third cup to a more deserving city. And all bobhpiningforattention would have left is wine and poodles. I believe that would make him a male “cat-lady.”

      • bobhpine - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:37 AM

Haha. I’m 29. The detail of your imagination about me is a little disturbing. Ha…Funny nonetheless though. Weirdo.

I like Pinot noir, it’s good.

      • 19to77 - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Right. This is just getting weird now. Can you guys lay off for a while and like, maybe focus on hockey instead of stalking each other? This is PHT, not 4chan.

      • ml3939 - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:54 AM

        What the eff is 4chan?

  10. President Charles Logan - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:11 PM

How obvious is it that Lindy Ruff should be coaching this team by this weekend?

    • ibieiniid - Mar 14, 2013 at 8:21 AM

4th goal went in, Ruff popped in my head. I was huge on Lavy when his critical-moment timeout s— was working, but now it’s not…. and everyone on the team is under-performing. it’s pretty obvious IMO

  11. sheckyrimshot - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:21 PM

i’m gonna take my bryz apologist card and wipe my butt with it and light it on fire. i’m so done with this jackwagon. i’m sick of seeing the flyers lose and seeing and hearing people say “blergh bryz wasnt that bad tonight even though that one easy goal should have been stopped.” for the kind of contract he signed he should be a lot friggin better than “not that bad.” he should be stealing games and carrying this team on his back. i’m not saying he’s solely responsible for this team’s abysmal play this year, but this guy is a freakin mutt doofus and a pox on the locker room. i guarantee lavy can’t stand this two bit urkel. “da if we lose next two game we are season done.” WHY THE FLARK DO YOU SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT? i’d put that clown on waivers five minutes ago and roll the dice with bouch and ::cringe:: leighton. its not like they could do any worse, and i’m sure the whole team would be much happier without the crown prince of d-bags in the locker room.

  12. djamesbart - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:35 PM

    Why didn’t Giroux play tonight?

  13. drewzducks - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:42 PM

  14. President Charles Logan - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:49 PM

Losing both Carter and Richards was devastating to this franchise but people seriously, it’s time to get over JVR already! , he was a pu$$y for a guy his size and was so over hyped , too bad they got a lousy defenseman in exchange for him , one loser for another .

    • 19to77 - Mar 14, 2013 at 1:09 AM

JVR is third in points and first in goals on a Leafs team that’s considerably higher in the standings than the Flyers.

But go on, tell me about how overrated and awful he is.

      • President Charles Logan - Mar 14, 2013 at 2:06 AM

and he produced and backed up what kind of numbers to cover all that hype he got in philly again?

yeah thought so , shut up

      • 19to77 - Mar 14, 2013 at 2:15 AM

Don’t blame your incompetent coach’s mismanagement of a talented player on the player. It’s not his fault he couldn’t excel under Laviolette. Apparently reigning Cup champions Richards and Carter weren’t good enough to meet his lofty standards either.

  15. phillyphanatic77 - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:51 PM

Embarrassing would be an understatement. This team is an enigma. We NEED ANOTHER win and we come out with that effort? Turnovers turnovers turnovers. They continue to lead to backbreaking goals. Just no common sense on this team. Gervais singlehandedly cost us two goals. Foster was horrendous. Mezsaros same. They were all terrible. But, but, will there ever be a game Bryz makes a save to keep us in it? All the time, across the league, I see Lundqvist make a save to keep his team in it; I see Quick or Bernier make a save to keep em in the game; Jimmy Howard, Pekka Rinne, Roberto Luongo all come up when their teams need them. Bryz just doesn’t have the ability to cover up the Flyers mistakes (no matter how blatant), he just can’t do it. I don’t blame him at all for the season. He’s done okay with little help. But I’m over it. I wanna move on from Bryz. He just never makes THAT save that can turn around a game, that’s just not him. And because of that it’s time to amnesty him. I can’t take another year of this Russian nutjob. Amnesty him! And do whatever it takes to get a Bernier, a young goalie with franchise ability in Philadelphia. I just can’t watch Bryz give up 4+ goals a night anymore. I’m done.

  16. stakex - Mar 13, 2013 at 11:58 PM

The Flyers, who are in 11th in the East, might only be three points out of 8th right now… but they have played three more games then the Rangers (8th), and two more then the Jets (9th), Islanders (10th), and Tampa (12th). Thats a huge problem since they could be as many as nine points down to the Rangers… which would be 5 games. Five games out of a playoff spot with 20 games left, and not playing good? Bryzgalov is right, the Flyers are done if they lose on Friday.

As for why they are playing bad…. terrible defense, lack luster offense, and so-so goaltending. Its not really rocket science, and theres not much that can be done about it. They simply aren’t that great of team.

  17. martysbetter - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:01 AM

    Thanks LA!
Hope that 5th round pick works out for you!

    • 19to77 - Mar 14, 2013 at 2:02 AM

Can ‘t help but notice Ponikarovsky was back covering the D position while Loktionov was up on the wing, but WOW. Sweet hands.

  18. broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 14, 2013 at 12:16 AM

You know what some of you guys whine so much about Bryz you should be Hens fans. Bryz made tons of saves that kept this team in it. Anyone who says different has not been watching games this season. That guy has been hung out to dry more than a bath towel by a leaky defense and costly turnovers. That being said this team will make the playoffs but what they lack is that elite dman that was Pronger. Last year Poile asked for Schenn, Couts and picks in exchange for Weber and everybody was up in arms over it. I always thought Homer was a fool for not making that trade. So far he’s proving my point

    • mordock57 - Mar 14, 2013 at 1:19 AM

I am admittedly a lifelong Pens fan, and therefore, obviously enjoying the show here… both on PHT and the NHL. Bob Pine clearly drives you nuts because there are some kernels of truth in his disparaging rants of Flyer hatred. I’m not defending his methodology, per se… but he does make a few valid points here and there. That said, I generally avoid the flame wars on here. No need to add insult to injury. The Flyers are self destructing before our eyes. Bryzgalov takes a ton of blame, but maybe deserves only half of it. (That’s still a lot of blame to absorb.) I fully understand the need of some Flyers fans to insist that they will make the playoffs, even if only as a daily affirmation of confidence and support of their team as a loyal fan… but if watching this team this season, you TRULY believe at this point that it’s likely… I feel badly for you. They peaked during that epic win against the Pens a few weeks ago, and it’s been a backslide ever since. I actually wish the Flyers luck, because they now need an epic win streak to have a shot. I’d prefer to see them in the playoffs personally, as I like the rivalry, but I won’t shed a tear when they don’t make the cut.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 14, 2013 at 2:10 AM

Mordock don’t be a tool no one is fantasizing here. I said the same thing a few years ago when the Flyers limped into the playoffs and made quite a run. Now I’m not naive to expect a repeat but they will make the playoffs. Wishful thinking? Confidence? whatever. There are too many teams in the east very close in point and struggling to count the Flyers out. PS don’t kid yourself Piney Bob is a trolling Dbag thats why he drives us nuts. He should stick to sniffing his mom’s panties and fantasizing about blowing Cindy Crysby.

First, apologies from a Pens fan on the behavior of some from our fan base. If the roles were reversed right now, guys like bobphine probably would be all bent out of shape. Its not fun when your team isnt doing well, and its classless when rival teams fans are spiking the football.

All that being said, Id stop the hyperventilating if I was a Flyers fan. Id like to point to the 2008/2009 Pittsburgh Penguins who limped into the playoffs, only by getting hot the last few weeks of the season. That June, us Pens fans were celebrating a Cup. Moral of the story? Theres still alot of hockey to be played, and the Flyers are only three points out of the 8 seed.

Just want to say thanks for the posts from koontang11 and whiskytango333.

Always nice to meet a fellow mature hockey fan….no matter what team they follow.

It’s a shame that both of our clubs have some real d-bags amongst their fanbase. It truly makes you wonder how some of these people make it through life, considering they haven’t grown up and become adults at all.

It’s not bears he should be afraid of, it’s Devils and Penguins!!!
