Watching this interview was gut-wrenching.

It’s one thing when an injury causes a playing career to end. It’s another when an injury truly affects the quality of life of a player. Watching him do exercises just to try to improve his vision, the post-concussion symptoms, the headaches and not being able to play with his kids, not being able to do simple, everyday tasks like shop or drive…nobody should have to go through anything like this.

Watching this press conference provided a painful glimpse of what could’ve been with this Flyers team. Pronger provides that shutdown presence and leadership ability that few possess. Losing a hall of fame defenseman, who was the unquestioned general in the room, takes away that steadying presence and robs the team of a player that truly knows what it takes to win a cup. He refuses to admit he’s retiring but the state of his eye would make it almost impossible to play again. You can’t help but question if he had been wearing a visor would there be a much greater chance of return? And I’d say the answer is yes. His concussion symptoms are improving (although still present) but his eye sight will never improve. The Flyers may not have won a cup with Pronger as captain but having #20 on the ice would have given them an infinitely better shot. And they probably wouldn’t be mired in a slump right now. I think Giroux will be an excellent captain in his career, but there’s no substitute for experience. I wish him the best in future endeavors, but can’t help to think what could’ve been.

Ah yes the I miss the attention press conference. Everyone thought this guy was retired already. Just go away chris. you have nothing else to prove. keep playing and you’ll be sipping your food through a straw in 5 years.

No, under the CBA you cannot buyout an injured player. And with Pronger signing a contract over the age of 35, the entire contract is guaranteed. Only way for the flyers to avoid the cap hit would be for him to remain on the roster and for the flyers to keep him on the LTIR. If he retired the flyers would be responsible for the approximately $5 million dollar cap hit each year until his contract expires.

Pronger said he is not retiring. He is staying on LTIR. So thats that.

There is no maximum on the length of being on LTIR. the only requirement is that the team medical staff determines you are “physically unable to play for a minumum of seven days.”

As far as I’ve read, there is no rule that puts a limit on how long you can be on LTIR.

I’m curious if Pronger will announce his true retirement or if he will announce a quasi-retirement to the LTIR until 2016-17. We shall see.

I would imagine so, unless they wanted to stow him on LTIR and then use the buyout to leverage a renegotiation with a guy like Mez. Flyguy fans would probably be better suited to address the likelihood of that.

It’s always strange when a guy retires who I grew up watching – whether I loved him or hated him.

Best of luck to Pronger in his post hockey life. I think he might end up getting a couple guest spots on some media outlets provided he can handle the lights (not trying to be funny there – given his concussion issues its not out of the question that the lights would bother him).

I am pretty sure he is going to retire, I just do not know why.
If he retires its just going to hurt the flyers cap for the next few years. He could easily stay on LTIR for the rest of the contract.

Since it’s a safe bet what he’s going to be talking about… best of luck in whatever the post-hockey future brings you, Chris, and thank you for many years of great hockey. Never been a fan of the teams you’ve played for, and many an evening has been spent holding a middle finger up at my screen when you’ve been on it, but… thank you regardless.
