Penguins roar back from 4-1 deficit to beat Flyers

Mar 7, 2013, 11:43 PM EDT

penguinshuggetty Getty Images

Much has been made about how much the Pittsburgh Penguins struggle holding onto a lead. On the bright side, most leads seem pretty unsafe against them, as well.

The Philadelphia Flyers built a 4-1 cushion against the Penguins in the first period on Thursday, chasing Marc-Andre Fleury in the process. Ilya Bryzgalov felt his pain tonight, as Pittsburgh eventually scuttled him for Brian Boucher while closing the gap during a strong final 40 minutes for a 5-4 win.

Here are the highlights.

The Flyers haven’t blown at least a three-goal lead and lost in regulation since Jan. 17, 1993 (vs. Detroit), according to Elias Sports Bureau. Bryzgalov declined to comment after the game, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi reports.

Philly should be frustrated either way, but some will wonder if Scott Hartnell tied the game in the third period on this play, which a review confirmed as a no-goal.

Regardless, the Penguins are now second overall in the East while the Flyers slide to 11th.

What a game! Another big 2 points for the pens to extend the division lead, and with NYI/NYR game going to extra time it really puts flyers playoffs hopes in jeopardy. They have a tough schedule ahead and I don’t see them making it this year. If you watch hartnell, timonnen, and giroux post game press conferences and still think giroux should be the captain if that team I don’t know what to tell you. I honestly thought he was going to cry there. I’m most impressive with how our team limited the flyers chances after the first and kept going after a horrific first period. Kunitz is quitlly in the NHL leader board and Sid is playing lights out hockey as usual. Good night to be a pens fan.

    • icelovinbrotha215 - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Still have the same problem us Flyers fans are dealing with: a team that seems to be allergic to defensive play. Regardless, Pens fans had a good night.

      • xavier46 - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:16 AM

That allergy cleared up quite well after the first period, no?

      • stakex - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:26 AM

It might have cleared up a little… but they still gave up 4 goals in the first period. Good luck in the playoffs with that kind of play.

      • bobhpine - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:45 AM

Is Giroux still the best player in the world? Did he even play until that last shift? Who knew Jagr made that buck toothed ginger? I wonder how many points Giroux would have on a line with Kunitz and Dupuis.

        He can’t carry Crosby’s jock.

Oh yeah…Crosby sucks! Crosby sucks! Right?

So what does that say about Gingeroux, the -5 captain with 13 fewer points sitting at ninth place halfway through the season? I guess he needs more jam…darn it, no jam left I guess. Crosby must have all the jam.

The Flyers got dominated for 40 minutes and got a cheesy deflection and the softest goal of the year by MAF.
25 games….11 wins. Puck dont lie.

Where is ml3939? He could be literally anywhere…except at Wells Fargo. Keep plugging away girls…keep striving for .500

      • ml3939 - Mar 8, 2013 at 1:53 AM

Aw, bobhpiningforattention is now pining for my attention. How sweet! The Pens really stepped up after the first period and played a great game. I think I heard the rest of the season was cancelled. No need to play on as the Pens had an excellent second and third period. The flyers then released Giroux. They said it was impossible to keep him on the roster because bobhpiningforattention said he has red hair, for the millionth time (I think someone might have a thing for gingers). I believe he may catch on with the Thunder Bay Bombers on a line with Carl Racki. Hopefully Racki can protect him from bobhpiningforattention’s red hair jokes. They are very hurtful and immune from creativity.

      • miketoasty - Mar 8, 2013 at 9:02 AM

Lol, typical Flyers fan. Bobhpine comes out throwing statistics, yet ml3939 would rather talk out of his ass. Humorous to see how things go down in times like these.

      • bobhpine - Mar 8, 2013 at 10:05 AM

What else is he going to do? He has to make personal attacks.

        Facts are facts.

The Flyers are a game or so ahead of the worst teams in the league and the Pens are two points from a #1 seed. The only stats Flyers fans seem to care about are playoff appearances and…bankruptcy proceedings…I don’t know, I’m pretty sure that’s not a stat. I mean, in reality if a team that has financial issues has more cups than your financially stable team, why would you bring that up?

When these two teams just play hockey, the superior team is obviously the Penguins. The difference between the first period and period 2 and 3 is that the Penguins simply stopped engaging in nonsense. The result was four unanswered goals. One of my earlier stats was wrong however.

The Flyers WERE in ninth. They ARE in eleventh. Eleventh.

Maybe the good people at Make-a-wish can hook the terminally pathetic ml3939 with some tickets one day. I can make a call on his behalf.

      • ml3939 - Mar 8, 2013 at 9:14 PM

Apparently miketoasy has the comprehension ability of bobhpiningforattention I am pretty sure the personal attack was all his. He called me out in his post. I responded. I guess he statistically dominated me. I complemented the Penguins play in my statement. I don’t question there abilities or insult their players. That what your friend bobhpiniforattention does. it is a theme consistent in his posts.

Statistically speaking, the Penguins have one more cup than the Flyers, the is it. And how much pride can you take in the first two considering they lost games intentionally to draft Mario. Had they played with integrity, they would have finished ahead of the Devils the year before Mario was drafted and found themselves in another city today. So, that third cup would never have made it to Pittsburgh.

Some more stats, the Flyers are the winningest team in the league outside the original six, have the second highest winning percentage in NHL history, have missed the playoffs far less than the Penguins (without looking it up, I believe the margin is 17-8 playoff misses favoring the Penguins), the Flyers are 53 game over .500 all time versus the Penguins and have won 4 of the 6 playoff series. I will gladly take the stats from a larger sample than half a season. The penguins finished ahead of the Flyers last year too and that didn’t work out so well.

So Bobhpiningforattention, since miketoasy is such a fan of yours, you can invite him out for the free wine you boast about drinking and then he can help you dress your poodles in matching sweaters while reveling in mid season accomplishments.

  2. killerpgh - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Fun game to watch like usual between these 2 teams. Pens were horrible in the 1st period and got out shot 18 to 4 (i think) but battled back to win the game. They had an interesting stat on during the game tonight. Only 2 teams have not been 1 game over .500 at any time this season. The Flyers and Capitals.

  3. hockeywithdrawal - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Spent all night on a bus travelling to baltimore, hitting refresh over and over on my phone for updates….and it was STILL an exciting game!

  4. zetaone - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:20 AM

Would have been great to watch with my PAID GCL ( subscription, but it was blacked out because it was on the NHL Network. Gotta love capitalism..

    • stakex - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:29 AM

Yeah Blackout restrictions suck. I’m a Rangers fan, and I live in an area where I don’t get MSG… but since I’m still on the edge of their broudcast area their games are blacked out for me on Center Ice, GCL, NHL Network, and even sometimes on NBCSN. Such BS.

      • zetaone - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:44 AM

Yeah it wasn’t terrible so much last season. A few of the games each week were taken by NBC or VS (can’t remember if they still had games last year). Now it seems like the best games EVERY DAY are “bought” by NBCSN and NHL network.

I don’t have a TV subscription by choice (I find television programming to be pure excrement the past few years) so I purchased a GCL subscription so I can watch hockey. While I can understand why NBC games are blacked out (though I’m still annoyed by it), I don’t understand why NHL network games are blacked out. GCL and NHL network are owned by the same entity (NHL). So one can only blame money-grubbing capitalistic lawyered-up CEOs for this nonsense.

      • r8rbhawk - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:56 AM

I agree, this is terrible. I have had GCL for the past 4 years and it seems like this year has been the worst for blacked out games. Why in the hell can we not see a game that is on NHL network if we have paid the NHL for GCL? I don’t pay for cable, I only pay for GCL. I guess I can watch this game on Saturday…

      • pensfan1970 - Mar 8, 2013 at 8:13 AM

Completely agree with everyone here, especially where NHL Network games are concerned. Comcast tells me that NHL Network is “not available in my area”, so I couldn’t subscribe even if I wanted to. That’s the only issue I have with those games being blacked out on GCL. Love being able to stream all of the other games in HD on the PS3 though. :)

  5. puckyouall - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:20 AM

Good game for Pens but, they need to worry about the sloppy play in the first period. Can’t be doing that in the playoffs.

  6. President Charles Logan - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:32 AM

Pens are the better team all around , been saying all along this Flyer team is really inconsistent. Luke Schenn has not impressed anybody either.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 8, 2013 at 6:24 AM

I f the flyers had a goaltender do you realize the pens lose that game that being said fluery was bad also !

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 8, 2013 at 6:26 AM

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 8, 2013 at 7:06 PM

I was down there last night so Iam a little sensitive hahaha ! I truly believe that that game was their season I have come to grips that the flyers will not make the playoffs ! You know from my post Iam not a bryz fan that being said the bigger part is the play in front of him ! A lot of Pens fans there last night !

      • ironman721 - Mar 8, 2013 at 7:14 PM

I wanted to go but couldn’t get off work. Now I wish I would have. Haha. But just relax the Flyers are one of the top 8 teams in the East. No way they miss the playoffs. Anything can happen then. Look at NJ last year.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 8, 2013 at 7:53 PM

Thanks for the kind words but the devils still have Marty and at 40 he still can carry a team ! Yo it was the first time I seen Malkin in person I have one word to describe him ,,,strong ! Right away you see the difference between him and the rest of the field ! Strong stick ,strong stride !

      • ironman721 - Mar 8, 2013 at 9:35 PM

Now if he can just stay on the ice. 2 things you can count on almost every year: 1) Pitt and Philly in hockey playoffs and 2) my pirates will finish below .500 no matter how many wins they have at the all star break.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 9, 2013 at 9:58 AM

Ironman I never thought this day would come but Iam turning to you a pens fan for therapy ! I wake up this morning and the flyers are staring up at the horrible icelanders tied in point with the icelander a game in hand !
To make matters worse the flyers have a very good chance of receiving a beatdown of biblical preportions in Boston today ! I know we are foes but you gotta help me here ! You have every right to look to the east and laugh your rear end off but I know your a better man than that hahahahhaah !

DUDE! Same here. I live almost 90 miles from san jose but my town is unavailable for Charter. Blacked out when they play on anything (nbc, nbcnetwork and gcl) i also cant get NHL network in my area. I feel your guys pain!

  8. r8rbhawk - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:53 AM

Yay, we get to sit back and watch the pens and flyers fans go at it.

  9. stakex - Mar 8, 2013 at 12:53 AM

Not really a fan of either team, but they both have serious defensive problems. The Pens might have tightened up a bit in the 2nd and 3rd….. but they still gave up four goals in a period and had to score five goals to win the game. In their last six games they have given up 27 goals, which is 4.5 goals a game. Now the Pens managed to win four of those six games since they have an all star offense… but Pens fans should be worried about the playoffs.

We have seen time and time again over the last few years that offense only teams have gone nowhere in the playoffs. It was always a shock when the run and gun Caps were knocked out of the playoffs, but it really shouldn’t have been. They always lacked solid play on the back end (defense and in goal), and playing against the better teams in the conference who were playing tighter defense… they looked ineffective. Just last year the Pens, playing virtually the same style they are playing now, were blown out in the first round by the Flyers… who themselves, playing only slightly more defense, were routed in the second round. All the teams that made it to the Conference finals had top notch goaltending, and solid defnese.

So while the Flyers have to worry about making the playoffs…. the Pens need to worry about their defensive play (and goaltending) when they start. They can try to score their way to a cup, but if recent history is any indication, they better start booking some tee times after the first round if they try that.

    • xavier46 - Mar 8, 2013 at 2:15 AM

The Rangers should worry about the possibility of needing to book tee times during the first round.

    • pensfan1970 - Mar 8, 2013 at 8:20 AM

Very good points here, stakex. I agree with most of them, although I feel our goaltending will be fine, as long as our defensive issues get straightened out. Fleury had a bad night, but he’s been really solid most of the year. In contrast, that’s the best Vokoun has looked in his past 4 or 5 games. Amazing how playing better defense in front of him does that! Haha.

Most Pens fans are definitely concerned about this team’s refusal or inability to play consistently on defense. They won’t last long in the postseason unless something changes. I feel like a trade or two might be coming. Otherwise, it will be an early exit for sure.

  10. anthonykornheiser - Mar 8, 2013 at 1:06 AM

It’s ridiculous the flyers have played so many games and have only 23 points. If the panthers win their game in hand, they are only one game behind them, ouch.
I think a lot of this flyers team is media hype and hype from their own fans. They are expecting a lot of this young core to be superstars or have crowned them superstars already, and i dont think that will ever be the case. I have to be honest, giroux was nasty last yr, but, a ton of pros have one great great yr and then mediocre to good seasons the rest of their career. I watch a ton of flyers games and he is barely noticeable most nights. When my team plays them, i dont fear him like i do when other players carry the puck or step on the ice. certain players just seem more dominant and scary in key situations, like a crosby, nash, kane. Flyers fans are just fooling themselves to keep saying they are fine with the JVR trade, schenn is an OK player but doesn’t solidify that D. certain young players you seem flashes from and know theyre going to be lights out, i dont get the fuss over guys like “couts’ he’ll be a nice player but thats about it, same for schenn and co. Flyers fans need a reality check, glance over everyone in the NHL’s roster, they ALL have a ton of young players, not only you Philly.

    • filadelphiaphlyers - Mar 8, 2013 at 10:30 AM

Ooo that one hurts deep… Sound argument but Id rather not give up hope and keep my fingers crossed they figure it out with enough time a make the playoffs. As the kings displayed last year all you need is a spot in the playoffs to win it all. Kings underachieved all season last year until it mattered most.

On another note about the flyers young players… you can say us flyers fans are not ok with the JVR trade still. JVR is probably going to be a very good-great player for years for come. Not saying we got the short stick in the trade because Luke hasnt disappointed. What D-men contribute doesnt always show up in direct stats like goals and assists like it does for forwards. For example Chris Pronger scored a point every other game but still was regarded as one of biggest impact dmen in the league by every sober hockey fan. Kimmo Timonen has perennially been one of the flyers top dmen and most would say the flyers would not be the same team without him. He hasnt put up the biggest numbers but he has still been a big part of the defense on the preds and the flyers in the most nonflashy way possible for 14 years. Luke is 23 years old, has been playing an average of around 20 mins per game, and is a +3. His future is bright.

    • filadelphiaphlyers - Mar 8, 2013 at 10:30 AM

Giroux has still been a point-per-gamer this year. That still not something to scoff at. especially considering the new responsibilities/pressure he has as a captain.

  12. rockthered1286 - Mar 8, 2013 at 6:28 AM

Wait- you’re telling me a top team in the Pens comes back from 4 down after 1 to beat a terrible defensive team in Philly and that warrants a PHT article- but yesterday the less than stellar Caps get down 3-0 after 1 against a top team in the Bruins, and manage to come back and win 4-3, following that performance up with a 7-1 win (scoring 10 straight goals without allowing one in the process) and that gets nothing?? That’s jacked.

Hey when your team stops hovering around the basement, then maybe they’ll get some coverage. You’re 5 out of a playoff spot, but 2 out of last place in the east. Besides, it’s a rivalry game. Who is Washington’s big rival? The Carolina Hurricanes?

    • manchestermiracle - Mar 8, 2013 at 10:09 AM

I understand your feelings, rock. My team is the defending champs and they get no write-ups win OR lose, which they did last night with Quick in goal.

Funny bit from the AP recap:

“An unusual number of Penguins fans at the Wells Fargo Center roared in approval while the orange-clad Flyers fans fell silent.”

  18. steelpenbucs87 - Mar 8, 2013 at 9:26 AM

Four takeaways from that game for me:
    1) The Pens D does exist – if not all the time. The addition of Eaton can’t be understated, nor can the play of Martin this year. The question becomes can they execute for 60 minutes (and multiple 60 minutes for that matter). If so this team is scary.
    2) Who is ‘the guy’ on the Flyers? I think coming out of last year no one would have said anyone but Giroux but this year he’s been entirely pedestrian. Is it Voracek? Is it Briere? Is it Hartnell? Simmonds? Who was the guy when it was 4-3 or 4-4 that Flyers fans were looking to and saying,, “that’s the guy who is going to stop the bleeding.” And where was he?
    3) With that being said if Voracek decides to treat every game like Flyers-Pens look out… kid may have a higher ceiling than Giroux….
    4) Chris Kunitz and James Neal were both acquired in deadline deals that were more than just 1 year rentals and their effect on this team has been phenomenal. Kudos to Ray Shero.

    • steelpenbucs87 - Mar 8, 2013 at 9:52 AM

On other note – I was against the Mark Eaton signing initially….. so you can pretty much take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Why yes, this IS crow I’m eating. It’s delicious you really must try some.

  19. phillyphanatic77 - Mar 8, 2013 at 9:48 AM

Ok I gotta rant about this embarrassment…This was the worst loss of the season. Worse than all the losses combined. I don’t know how you can build a 4-1 lead and have the game feel as if you lost 8-1. The 2nd and 3rd period were disgusting displays of “hockey” by the Flyers. I almost wish the the first period had never ended, because that’s the only way the Flyers win this game. Against any other team that 4th goal at the end of the 1st is a back-breaker, but against the Pens you know they’re gonna come out flying (this rivalry has shown no lead is safe). When you have a 3 goal lead on your in-state rival, a team you despise above all others, in a game you MUST win, you step on their throats. You attack, attack, and attack and put the nail in the coffin. If they did that you know the Pens would’ve been thrown off and taken some more undisciplined penalties. But no, you come out timid. You play on your heels, go totally conservative, and take your foot completely off the gas. It was disgusting. When you try to hold a lead, when you stop attacking, you play right into the Pens hands! What they do best is skate in open ice which allows their vast amount of talent to play to their strengths. Obvious kudos to Pittsburgh for not giving up, but a blind monkey could have scored on that Flyers team. The way the defense played made me sick to my stomach. Embarrassment. I just can’t get over the fact that in a crucial rivalry game, a game you need so much more than your opponent, you come out completely flat after gathering a 4-1 lead!? Total disgrace. I’ve tried to maintain a positive attitude all season, despite the Flyers lackluster performance. I always thought they’d make a comeback, but that was the type of game that you can build off of. Instead it sends you further down the ladder to a place the Flyers can ill afford to go. It’s time to sit Erik Gustafsson. He’s been HORRENDOUS. I can’t count the number of times that kid has whiffed on the puck, turned it over, or just done the absolute wrong thing. He had to have lost the puck 8-10 times last night. And he’s our 2nd unit PP QB? Are you kidding me Laviolette?! That’s illogical, idiotic, asinine. What has he done to warrant that responsibility? Every single time the puck hits his stick I know he’s going to make a mistake. And it goes beyond being a young, inexperienced player. He has some of the worst instincts I’ve ever seen in a defenseman. He’s inept. And the rest of the defense was right there with him last night. But that wouldn’t have mattered if you come out firing in the 2nd. But the Flyers told themselves they had it won, that the Pens were cooked. And it played right into Pittsburgh’s hands. That loss was one of the most painful I’ve ever watched. I am disgusted with every aspect of the team right now. And I’ve completely lost faith that this team has what it takes to turn this season around.

phanatic, just accept the fact that your precious flyers are no match for the extreme firepower pittsburgh has. the only reason flygirls had a good first period is because pitt had an awful one. your team is one of the worst in the league. might as well jump off the bandwagon like all your other fellow fans

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 8, 2013 at 9:46 PM

Will you admit that you’re a front-running Pens fan already? All you do is troll every Flyers related page with some asinine insult. And you say you’re not a Pens fan… BS! Unlike your western Pa bretheren we dont desert our teams when they’re struggling. You show up a few days ago and do nothing but praise the Pens and disparage Philly. Guess you had to wait for Malkin to return before you could fully commit to the Pittsburgh bandwagon? Oh, and the only reason the Pens had a good 2nd is because the Flyers had an awful one. See, I can put a thought like that together as well. Although you do deserve some credit as that was easily your most insightful post.

The fact that you just resorted to a bastardized form of the “I know you are but what am I?” comeback, I’m going to assume that you don’t have any evidence to offer in terms of why you think the goal should have counted. So, please go peddle your misery elsewhere – many of your outraged brethren have still managed to maintain some class in these proceedings and I don’t think they’d like you disparaging their name.

What masterful analysis and commentary from another classless Hens fan. Your opinion on my reply is the equivalent of scratching my balls. My evidence is that the stick was not over the crossbar and Vokoun’s hooting and hollering and the ref’s typical biased reaction to Bettman’s marketing sweetie pies resulted in a disallowed goal.

Geez, 5hole26… even I can show some sympathy for phillyphanatic… sheesh. It’s a tough loss. Believe me, we knew the feeling not that long ago in the previous meeting of these two teams. Granted, that particular goalfest was more competitive from start to finish, but still… lay off the guy. I feel his pain.

And it was clearly a high stick goal from Hartnell. One camera angle showed it plain as day. You can be bitter, but stay here in reality with us.

Great night to be a Pens fan. EVERY game between these two feels like a playoff game.

Thank you mordock. Ahole26 trolls almost every single comment I post. He has no hockey knowledge so he resorts to childish name calling and cliche Flyers jokes. I respect most Pens fan on PHT, and I can readily admit they’re a supremely talented team, but he deserves no such respect. And you are correct, Hartnell hit it with a high stick. That call was the least of the Flyers problems last night. Those saying otherwise are simply jaded by the excruciating loss.

Youre kidding, right? Take your homer glasses off. Even the hideously biased commentators said it was too high.

Look at the ice level angle, its at least 10 inches above.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 8, 2013 at 2:38 PM

That was a BS call plain and simple. of course that does not excuse the fact that the Flyers took a 40 minute break during the game.

philly cheese steaks are gross and so is their cream cheese. The only good thing you guys have there is a statue of a fictional character.

I’m a Pens fan and Philly cheesesteaks are awesome so cut them a break.

    rockthered, whats the Caps record?
Yea, exactly…. Great wins non the less. Still wait till they get anywhere near .500 before you expect media attention. Get the Caps app. I’m sure they are reporting.
