Just about every power play, a defensive player goes low to block a shot/pass. It is amazing that there are not more pucks that injure players.

I have no idea what quads are but ok? I’ve actually played at a very high level of hockey but I don’t need to flaunt my resume on a message board.

There’s also no law that requires you to wear a full face mask at any level and I’m not sure why a knowledge of the legal world is a prerequisite for playing hockey but wherever you play must be filled with very intelligent people. I’d be curious to see your citation to the full facemask law; is it a statutory requirement or is it judicially based?

Obviously it is YOU who has never played the game on ice. Maybe you have an old pair of quads you rocked on an empty basketball court back in the day.

Anyone here on this blog who HAS played the game on ice was required by law to wear full face protection. So of course I don’t understand what is so good about not having one. Obviously it makes a difference because everyone at the NHL level doesn’t use one.

Unless of course, you sir, had played at a professional level.

Im not saying the guys a world class player, but hes not a 1st time scrub player. Catching a pass is a nothing play for him, it happened. The point is, even with players that know what theyre doing, weird bounces can happen all the time…even on seemingly innocuous plays.

I am surprised it doesn’t happen more often. There’s crowds of bodies and sticks in front of the net on just about every play so it’s lucky there aren’t a lot more of these freak plays. Still, the need for visors is a real one and hopefully that rule gets put into place before the next season.

Most players don’t want to wear the visors because it messes up their vision but clearly it messes up your face too, better to wear the visor and good luck on your recovery!

I don’t understand why most players wouldn’t want to wear some sort of eye/face shield. It must be very distracting. Every college player here in the USA wears a full face guard. First thing they do when they get out of college is they ditch the mask immediately. I know they look silly. But c’mon!

I guess its like what Dion Sanders said:

“If you look good, you feel good, If you feel good, you play good, If you play good, you get paid good.”

A very wild shot? Youve clearly never been on the ice. Ive seen people get hit in the face from a deflection off trying to catch a pass (it was actually a skilled player). When you deal with something not spherical, its almost impossible to tell how it will react.

Add in the fact that players are constantly trying to whack at the puck, each other, trying to block/deflect the puck on net, etc., yes, its a miracle it doesnt happen every game.

Its not a miracle at all. It takes either a very wild shot, or a freak deflection for something like this to happen…. and the head is a tiny target. Thus the odds of someone taking a full on shot to the eye, are very small. Players a far more likely to suffer a serious injury on a clean check.

It is a miracle this doesn’t happen once a game! Eye-shields should be considered as mandatory equipment (Grandfathered). Anyone who enters the League as of 2013-2014 needs to wear one. Just as they did with helmets.
