A player has to play a set number of regular season games or a game in the playoffs for his name automatically to be added to the cup however the flyers could petition for his name to be added. That is how the Bruins got Savard’s name on.

Was Pronger a dirty player? Maybe so. I can remember watching Byfuglien take crosschecks to his back over and over and there’s no denying that a crosscheck is against the rules.

However, I don’t think there is one team in the NHL that would pass on Pronger’s grit and tenacity to keep the puck and opposing players out of the blue paint in his prime. One of the best, toughest blue liners in recent NHL history and he will be sorely missed by fans and players alike.

Although I don’t like seeing anyone suffer through injuries or retire because of them, I can’t say I’m going to miss him. And if by some miracle the Flyers win the Cup this season before he retires and while they’re paying his salary, would his name go on the cup?

He’s automatically on LTIR because he’s been putting on the injured list so that Philly doesn’t need to take up a roster spot for him. He counts against the cap and then after every game he misses the Flyers get credit in the amount of his salary for that game on their cap….at least that’s my understanding of it.

On LTIR the team doesn’t pay him, an insurance company pays him so buying him out makes zero sense. The real question should be will the NHL allow the Flyers to get away with him being on LTIR when it’s clear that’ll he’ll never play in the NHL again?

Dustin Byfuglien owned him in the last 4 games of the SC Finals a few years back, he was never the same player after that ……….and that was before the concussions .

sgtr0c – I wasn’t basing it on just a blog. Go to a Flyers/Pens game sometime and see for yourself. I went to 2 playoff Flyers/Pens games last year in Philly, 1 in Pitt. Been to a ton of games in both Pitt & Philly between the 2 teams, including in Philly earlier this year. I love the heated rivalry and even like the trash talking. I just don’t like wishing harm on another player. Its classless and embarassing as a hockey fan and this game is too great to be reduced to such vitriol.

this guy was a BEAST and one of my favorite blue liners ever…..

however retiring on your own terms?? You lost your peripheral vision …i am pretty sure your retiring because you cant see well enough to play the game anymore. Hence the glasses in the interview.

Barry Sander retired on his own terms…not Pronger.

dkphilly – While I wholeheartedly agree with your sediments on Pronger and feel he’s one of the best players of his generation, I can’t help disagreeing with your take on Philly fans. These are the same people that actively root for Sidney Crosby’s career to be cut short from injury. Every team has some idiot fans, but the idiot fans either out yell or outnumber rational hockey fans in Philly by a wide margin.

oquintero99, it’s kind of a shady thing, but that’s probably exactly what the Flyers will do with him. The Bruins have been doing the same thing with Marc Savard for a few years now as well- rather than retire, they just put these guys on LTIR for the season. Seems to be a sketchy loophole, but legal anyway.

Could be wrong here, but I dont think he is LTIR yet, they don’t have to do it. Now if they acquire someone then they will LTIR, but I think he is counting toward the cap currently. I apologize if Im incorrect here.

No way the Flyers choose to buy out Briere. If they want to get rid of his cap hit, he is very tradeable since his salary for the last two seasons is way below the cap hit, so there would be a number of teams willing to take him in trade. Unless he decides to use his NMC rights to force a buyout, which is possible.

Have you ever watched him play in May? They will average 4 goals a game in the playoffs and get bounced in the 1st or 2nd round. They will buy him out this off season.

Because he signed his deal over the age of 35, retiring would mean the Flyers would be on the hook (cap-wise) for the entirety of the seven-year, $34.55 million deal signed in 2010. Don’t know if the league will allow Pronger to “not retire” and be on the LTIR for 5 yrs

Pronger should retire whenever HE wants to and is ready to. As Flyer’s fans WE would love to have a healthy Pronger back especially this year, but us Philly fans are also human and want him to have a normal life beyond Hockey. He has sacrificed his body throughout his career and has given it his all for the game. Good luck to him whenever he decides to officially end his great career.
