Eric Staal on brother Marc’s eye injury: ‘It’s hard to say now’

The New York Rangers have yet to offer an update on the condition of Marc Staal, but Staal’s brother on the Carolina Hurricanes, Eric, told NHL.com that more time is needed before anything is known for sure.

“It’s hard to say now. They’re just waiting for the swelling to go down,” said Eric, who reportedly spoke to Marc on Wednesday morning. “He sounded like he was in OK spirits but we don’t know a lot right now. Obviously we’re saying prayers and hoping he dodged a bullet as far as being struck in that area. We’ll know more with some more time.”

Marc was struck in the eye with a puck last night at Madison Square Garden — an incident that has reignited the debate over visors and whether they should be mandatory.

The Rangers did claim defenseman Roman Hamrlik off waivers from Washington today, though it’s not known if the move was related to Staal’s injury.

Marc was struck, not Eric. Hope the kid is ok. I hope those damn Staal boys put visors on…I can’t tell you how many times Jordan gave us a scare.

You’d think after what happened to Manny Malhotra and Bryan Berard NHLers would get the message. Apparently not

That does not sounds all too promising… never mind the NHL, just hope he keeps his vision.

I hope he’s okay but I’m not too optimistic based on the video/picture posted. I know someone who has lost their eye by a puck that snuck up his stick and into his face – this was an on end slap shot – I’d be really surprised if this doesn’t end his career, but I hope for the best.

Eric, do your parents a favor and put on a visor so that they don’t have to end up “praying” for any more of their kids to keep their vision. Tell those little brothers of yours down in Carolina to follow suit, too!

    GET WELL FRIEND …

At times like this, it’s completely immaterial as to which team you root for or whatever your level of interest in the game may be. The bottom line is that this man was badly hurt. And so our collective thoughts and prayers go out to him and his. Take care friend, be strong and may your recovery be strengthened by the knowledge that we’re “all” pulling for you. God bless you … signed, everyone.
