Blackhawks take second place all-time by extending point streak to 29 games

The Chicago Blackhawks won once again on Tuesday night, extending one record point streak (23 games to start a season) and breaking a tie with the 1977-78 Montreal Canadiens as their overall streak stretching back to last season is now 29 games.

Chicago did so by holding off a brief Minnesota Wild surge. The Blackhawks had a 4-1 lead in the third period that quickly went to 4-3, yet Patrick Kane ended that threat with an insurance goal to end it 5-3. Marian Hossa scored the winner on a night when the Blackhawks honored him for reaching the 1,000 games played plateau.

The ‘Hawks have won quite a few games by a slim margin lately, so give them a little leeway in struggling with an unusually robust lead.

Now the Blackhawks hope to tie (and then pass) the 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers, whose all-time record point streak ended at 35 games. (Again, Chicago’s 29 now stands alone ahead of that Habs team.)

The next obstacle: two games in a row against the Colorado Avalanche. They’ll host the Avs on Wednesday and then face them in Colorado on Friday.

They’ll have a little bulletin board material to point to, as Gabriel Landeskog welcomed the challenge to NHL.com before tonight’s game.

“Absolutely, it matters. I remember asking Paul Stastny early in the season, ‘When do we play Chicago?’ Chicago was maybe 5-0 and people were already talking a little about the streak,” Landeskog said. “Now there is only one more game in between and then it’s up to us and we could have a chance to end that streak. To be honest, I want them to win Tuesday night and we want to be the team that goes in there and puts an end to that.”

They’ll get two cracks at them, so be careful what you wish for, Mr. Landeskog.

    Here comes all the whining………..

    • polegojim - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:52 PM

      What whinning???

Almost everyone posting on these updates have given the Hawks congrats and respect.

  2. jpat2424 - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:25 PM

    Agreed. Lets here it

  3. r8rbhawk - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:26 PM

Hossa gets the GWG in his 1000th game. How fitting.

    • adambballn - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:30 PM

      1001st game… 1000 was Sunday in Detroit.

      • r8rbhawk - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:33 PM

my bad, they just did a big celebration for him before the game, the broadcast kept mentioning it was his 1000th.

  4. sjsharks66 - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:29 PM

    @1982

Why are you so defensive with the hawks? Lol
Enjoy the streak and stop trying to pick fights with stupid comments like ” lets hear all the whining”

  5. blackhawks1982 - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:29 PM

It was his 1001st game, Sunday was game number 1000

  6. thehighcountrybear - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:29 PM

Landeskog is expected to take his traveling comedy revue to LA’s Comedy Store in mid-April [ now take my friend O'Reilly...please ]? Then, he’ll follow John Tortorella as he leads his laugh parade through Yuk Yuks as both are expected to brighten an otherwise lingering and dreary winter across Canada!

    • polegojim - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:53 PM

First – teach O’Reilly now to NOT score on his own goalie

  7. blackhawks1982 - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:31 PM

Not trying to start arguments, but you know it’s true!

  8. mclovinhockey - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Good for them. However I don’t think the 29 can be used in order to pass the current recoded since it was in two seasons. Just my honest opinion, doesn’t make much sense

    • r8rbhawk - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:34 PM

Don’t worry, the way they are playing, they’ll do it this season.

    • rarelyshaves - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:28 AM

      totally agree

it’s a reaaaal big stretch to disregard a missing half of a season and a playoff series to go all the way back to last april.

I think I speak for more than myself when I say we’re certainly content with the streak that’s happened entirely within this season

    • arlingtonrob - Mar 6, 2013 at 1:08 AM

I agree…and I’m a Hawks fan. The 29 if mentioned requires an asterisk.
Just stay healthy Hawks and keep rollin’.

      • lunchboxray - Mar 6, 2013 at 10:52 AM

arlingtonrob, as fellow Hawks fan i totally agree with you about an asterisk being required

  9. sjsharks66 - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:34 PM

    @1982

I feel you! Great streak going on for the hawks. Pretty cool to see history like this.

  10. valoisvipers - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:38 PM

It’s great to see another Hab record fall.Well done Hawks

  11. blackhawks1982 - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:41 PM

Agreed, after the BS lockout this is a great way to help fans forget about it!

  12. thehighcountrybear - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:50 PM

On a less cheery note, the Canucks v Sharks game was delayed as authorities continued searching both Rogers Arena and incoming fans for a Russian AS Val sniper rifle; it believed used in the felling of Blackhawk sniper Marian [ I feel much better now ] Hossa during Chicago’s last visit. Happily, a quick side trip to Lourdes cured Mr. Hossa’s otherwise fatal condition…give me hallelujah y’all! On an even cheerier note and in keeping with Chicago’s long and happy association with firearms, the NRA is recommending United Centre dispense with messy metal detectors, X-Ray machines and other such truck by simply arming all fans and players before each game…? Flak jackets are simply falling off the shelves at area Walmarts…

    • rarelyshaves - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:30 AM

this would work except for the fact that chicago legislated heavily against guns and has for sometime.

also lets leave all NRA references to NASCAR fans

      • williplett - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:39 AM

While we are at it, leave the comedy to those who are at least a little bit funny. That was brutal, HCB.

    • comeonnowguys - Mar 6, 2013 at 1:00 AM

      Aw, buck up, big guy.

Soon it will be warm again, and you can go back leisurely walks through the park, swatting ice cream cones out of the hands of every kid you pass.

  13. chanceoffleury1 - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:02 AM

I was pulling for an Avs upset, but I didn’t know that other record belonged to the Flyers. Since that’s the case, let me just go get my 4 feathers and some war paint ready to cheer: Go, Hawks, Go!!! Saad was repping Pittsburgh tonight with a solid 3 point performance. Great to see the locals makin’ it big!

  14. blackhawks1982 - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:20 AM

    Bravo Gaycountrybear bravo!

  15. penzfan329 - Mar 6, 2013 at 12:37 AM

    These guys look unbeatable!

    • chanceoffleury1 - Mar 6, 2013 at 1:01 PM

They’re not undefeated, they just haven’t lost in regulation.

  16. thehighcountrybear - Mar 6, 2013 at 1:08 AM

Yeah, perhaps it was a bit over the top…’pologies? Still, dudes and dudettes, I recommend those among you who have iPads to drop $00.99 on the Police Scanner app. Choose ‘Most Popular’…top of the class is Chicago Police and Fire, by a wide margin! You’ll gain a whole new respect for those charged with protecting the windy city among others…totally professional and oft-times humorous. Apparently there are those among Chicago’s citizenry who didn’t get the memo re: gun legislation…

  17. dt58 - Mar 6, 2013 at 1:36 AM

CuntryBear…you don’t sound bitter at all. What exactly is your point? Are you saying iPhone ringtones are a true slice of our society? Please remove head from a$$… This is a hockey site, not a “run your mouth about random garbage” site…

  18. thehighcountrybear - Mar 6, 2013 at 2:15 AM

dt58: You betray a remarkable intellect…where in your estimation did your family drop a seemingly needless allele in its X-Chromosome? On a desired hockey note, while understanding you may actually play and therefore have a clue about hockey, there are some wonderful kits available permitting you and your kind to add tiny wheels to your hockey gloves; these are easily attached at the knuckles and prevent unnecessary wear and tear on your gloves as you drag them along the ice…

    • williplett - Mar 6, 2013 at 3:02 AM

Can I direct you to a couch to sleep it off, HCB? Here is a blanket and a pillow. Goodnight.

  19. thehighcountrybear - Mar 6, 2013 at 3:08 AM

Less bitter than cynical: the NHL and its players, one body of over-rated millionaires in opposition to another body of over-rated millionaires, got in a six month pissing match over the best way to divide spoils from the marketing of its over-rated and heavily diluted product. Now, on the strength of a Hawks’ streak that conveniently ignores their 2012 playoff debacle, we’re all expected to get all wet and dreamy-eyed over another bit of NHL flim flam, this while being asked to forget over-priced tickets, concessions, parking and ancillary team junk as the two bodies of over-rated millionaires continue to pick our pockets? I don’t buy it! The hockey post lockout has been dreadful, only coming to early-season form in the past week or so. Before you know it, we’re into playoffs with teams decimated by injuries with hockey in mid-season form demanding post-season ticket prices? So, after the Hawks’ ‘streak’ ends, what’s the next gimmick, Howdy Doody bobble head night League wide? Better still, give all the fans a replica champions ring, faux diamonds in the shape of an asterisk, available in a box of Cracker Jack and certainly worth the $800 it costs to take a family of four to watch the contemporary professional hockey product. Spare me the obligatory bafflegab and manufactured love-in over the ‘streak’ non streak, I have a field in my back forty covered in such stuff…

    • williplett - Mar 6, 2013 at 3:57 AM

      Wow. You are nuts.

    • comeonnowguys - Mar 6, 2013 at 9:18 AM

Here’s a tip that may improve your life:

The local newspapers don’t actually have coded messages to the sleeper agents hiding in your bushes.

Awesome series of posts we have here…. Smh

Great job again by the Hawks!!

Highcountrybear, while your post was so intellectual and well thought out, heres an idea:

You think the players and owners are whiney over paid people in America? Very simple solution:

Don’t buy anything NHL related and only watch the games your cable service provider televises. Instant not paying the NHL.
