Penguins win in Evgeni Malkin’s strong return

Mar 4, 2013, 10:23 PM EDT

If there was any concern about Evgeni Malkin being rusty in his surprising return from a concussion, he erased those doubts with gusto on Monday.

After missing four games, the 26-year-old star scored a goal and an assist in a great return as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3. As you can see from the video below, his tally was a genuine beauty:

Yup, he looks pretty healthy. Malkin finished with five shots on goal, went 7-5 in the faceoff circle and logged just under 21 minutes of ice time.

Star power was the story of the game, overall. Sidney Crosby also had a great game with a goal and an assist of his own while Steven Stamkos bumped his league-leading goals total to 17 with two tallies.

Tampa Bay is now on a five-game losing streak and only has four victories since Feb. 1 (4-11-1 in 16 games). Mathieu Garon‘s injury can’t make the Bolts feeling any better, either.

Man Lindback has really fallen off since the beginning of the season. I was hoping Tampa could pull off the upset but Crosby and Malkin were too much for this struggling club. And losing Garon didn’t help. The last Stamkos goal made things interesting but too little too late. Hard to do anything in 8 seconds, let alone .6. Malkin didn’t look rusty in the least, he’s unbelievable sometimes. But god damn Pierre McGuire makes me wanna jump off a bridge.

I cant remember who was playing, but the other night Pierre McGuire spent the better part of a period gushing over one of the refs. I wish I were making this up.

Don Van Massenhoven. I know EXACTLY what you’re referring to. Kept saying that with these two teams sharing bad blood, they have the best official in there to handle it. He must’ve said that exact phrase no less than 10 times in one period

    • mathieug79 - Mar 5, 2013 at 7:37 AM

I don’t think Lindback has fallen off, He’s never been consistent since becoming a bolt, Bolts defense are horrible (except for Salo, Carle and Hedman). Its quite a difference from Nashville’s defense. Anyways if they don’t get a Dmen very soon, they might get his confidence so low that he’ll never be an NHL caliber goalies, or if he does with another team ( see Mike Smith). Doesn’t matter who the Goaltender is, if the dmen in front of him can’t get the puck up the ice and out of the zone, Its going to hurt your team/confidence. This Tampa bay team is very good, their just missing a few pieces. Even if Lindback was battling the puck, he was making the saves, the goals that went in last night were all goals that you have to give credit to the other team, Crosby’s Goal, Malkin’s Goal, he had 0 chance of stopping those. Last 3 games Garon was outstanding and we didn’t win. All the goals that were scored, the tampa bay defense left a man alone in high slot. Yesterday our defense was better with MA Bergeron in the pressbox, this guy should never play another shift for the Tampa Bay lightning. He’s as horrible as they come, he has 3-4 (maybe more) giveaways in his own zone per game and he only plays 15 min/game

I wanted to jab a fork in my ear after listening to him pronounce Matthieu Garon’s name a thousand times. His french accents drive me NUTS. Thank goodness he left the game, I was contemplating doing bad things to Pierre the next time he came to DC

hedman looked like the real deal. that guy is money

      • mathieug79 - Mar 5, 2013 at 10:47 AM

I agree 100%, he’s day and night from last season. His play has improved so much. I think playing in the KHL during the lockout helped him a lot.

@Phillyphanatic77 – Pens fan here, thanks for the nice comments, I know we are hated rivals but it doesn’t mean people can’t be civil. And yes, “Pierre” is the worst. He’s so annoying when he’s rambling on about Saskatoon or Kitchener’s junior teams and how they somehow relate to what is happening at that time. Just shut it and talk about the freaking game!

      • hockeywithdrawal - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:22 AM

They need to package Pierre and Milbury up and trade them…somehere…anywhere…for anyone.

      • basedrum777 - Mar 5, 2013 at 3:53 PM

Can we trade Pierre and milbury to the KHL for an announcer to never be received?

    That was an awesome game!

  3. csilojohnson - Mar 4, 2013 at 10:51 PM

Lol I hear ya phillyphann, and I’m a Pens fan. Dont worry, tomorrow you’ll get to hear him crooning Giroux all game.

GOAL OF THE YEAR from Malkin tonight. So Lemieux-esque. Crosby and Letang’s back and fourth thing was sick too, but it looked like nothing when Malkin had just scored that goal a couple minutes earlier.

    • ml3939 - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:04 AM

Worked out for him that Matt Carle was the last turnstile between him and the goalie.

  5. sportsfreak13 - Mar 4, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Great game! It’s real cool to see 3 amazing goals by 3 of the best players in the NHL (Crosby, malkin, stamkos). Another big 2 points tonight’s coupled with a devils loss made it a real good Monday. Can’t wait till Thursday, I know it won’t disappoint. Tomorrows rangers vs flyers game is going to be fun to watch too. So glad hockey is back!

Just download the iheartradio app and tune it to 105.9 the X and you’ll never have to listen to Pierre again. Trust me, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

    • hockeywithdrawal - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:24 AM

They should put Lang back on TV where he belongs.

    • basedrum777 - Mar 5, 2013 at 3:55 PM

Or the Penguins app which has a radio button. Works here in NJ.

Our D looked better as a 5 man effort. Still not cup worthy D but a step in the right direction. We know Sid/ geno will put up points

    • basedrum777 - Mar 5, 2013 at 3:56 PM

Eaton has done a lot to be honest. Additionally we put Depres back in the starting lineup. There is a joke going on twitter that with Depres we’ve only lost like 2 games all year.

  8. reasonableperson1 - Mar 5, 2013 at 8:25 AM

The NHL at its best. Great players, great goals, and physical toughness all game. Certainly wouldn’t mind seeing these two teams meet up in the playoffs. But that may be a few years off until Tampa finds a goalie.

    • dfpoor - Mar 5, 2013 at 9:15 AM

Pens are scary. Malkin/Neal or Crosby/Kunitz. Ouch.

    • drunk4thliners - Mar 5, 2013 at 1:52 PM

Right now, I don’t want to see Tampa in the playoffs, or Jersey for that matter. Tampa is high energy and we would need 4 goals a game to beat them. Less in the tank for the next round. Jersey plays the Pens so well and shuts down the neutral zone. Hope to get someone else. If we met Philly, it would be tough, but the Pens would want to avenge last year post haste. (Whether they do it is up to them…)

      • chanceoffleury1 - Mar 5, 2013 at 8:05 PM

I’d love to see them matched up against the Rangers. They play well against them, and just getting past that first round will be big and light a fire. Right now the chances of that matchup don’t look too unrealistic. Can’t believe I might actually be rooting for the Rangers towards the end of the season!

  9. whatthepuck2012 - Mar 5, 2013 at 10:57 AM

I was at the game last night and so glad I was! Geno is a beast. And I was pretty impressed with Eaton. Anyone else?

    • jpelle82 - Mar 5, 2013 at 11:17 AM

2 solid games now from eaton, more than i expected – didnt even think he was gonna crack the lineup unless significant injuries amassed. pleasantly surprised.

      • basedrum777 - Mar 5, 2013 at 3:57 PM

He was good in the games he’s played. He can’t POSSIBLY be worse than Bortuzzo. He was atrocious.
