Video: New Capital Volpatti fights Jets’ Peluso

Mar 2, 2013, 6:04 PM EST

When you’re the new guy, you usually want to make a good first impression.

In office environments, it might mean picking up some pastries. In the NHL, it helps to score a goal, deliver a big hit or drop the gloves.

New Washington Capitals tough guy Aaron Volpatti chose the last option, as he engaged Winnipeg Jets fighter Anthony Peluso in a fight late in the first period of Saturday’s 3-0 Caps win:

That’s the fifth scuffle of Volpatti’s season and Peluso’s second (plus six AHL fights), according to Hockey Fights. Voters at that site gave Peluso the decision by 80 percent.

Still, sometimes it’s more about the gesture than winning or losing a fight. His Capitals teammates now know that Volpatti, 27, is willing to take on the league’s designated punchers.

Washington hopes that Volpatti can eventually deter moments like these between Mark Stuart and Alex Ovechkin:

“Voters at that site gave Peluso the decision by 80 percent.”

So…the other 20% are blind and deaf?

Typically, people will vote a “draw” as well. So yeah, pretty close to a unanimous decision.

Volpatti got destroyed. But, well played on trying to introduce yourself to the team and fan base.
