Video: Daniel Alfredsson cross-checks Zac Rinaldo in the face

Mar 2, 2013, 4:41 PM EDT

Harry Zolnierczyk wasn’t the only player getting thrown out of today’s game in Philadelphia. Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson earned himself a free trip to the showers in the third period thanks to his cross-check to the face of Flyers agitator Zac Rinaldo.

At 12:29 of the third, Alfredsson was upset after seeing Rinaldo deliver a big hit near the Senators bench and took exception. The captain jumped in after him and delivered some lumber to Rinaldo’s mug. The stick work earned Alfredsson a five-minute major for cross-checking and a game misconduct while Rinaldo got two minutes for roughing.

Will Brendan Shanahan come calling for Alfie? Check out the video from CSNPhilly and judge for yourselves.

Stop calling for league intervention on stuff like this! It’s such an over-reaction. He got a game misconduct. Done. Shanahan doesn’t have to review every little scuffle. People are completely missing the whole point of supplemental discipline.

I think a cross check to the head is something the league needs to look at you dope !

      • nunan - Mar 2, 2013 at 4:53 PM

incorrect. never was, never has been. lets review fighting then. It’s the huge, hits that cause concussions so that needs to be reviewed. Not stuff like this. The problem is people like you are so misguided about what the actual problem is.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 2, 2013 at 5:07 PM

Idiot so you think a cross check to the chiklets that could break a jaw can’t cause a concussion? Let me get this straight dope your comparing fighting to taking a stick across the teeth ! Something tells me you have been hit in the face with a shaft and liked it !

    • sabatimus - Mar 2, 2013 at 5:46 PM

I should buy you a unicycle to complete that clown outfit.

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Mar 2, 2013 at 6:04 PM

Yes, he got five and a game, but since there was only 7:31 left in the game it hardly matters. There should be a fine and/or a short suspension for a blatant crosscheck to the side of a guy’s head. That’s a dangerous play any way you slice it.

    • bigdong28 - Mar 3, 2013 at 5:43 PM

I think any incident where someone takes their stick to another players head on purpose should be reviewed. This deserves some sort of suspension or fine…Alfredsson is a respected veteran who should never act like this on the ice with no consequences. The worst part is that it was for no apparent reason at all.

  2. eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 2, 2013 at 4:45 PM

Zak will get 3 games for hitting a stick with his face !

Intent to injure and targeting the head

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Mar 2, 2013 at 6:05 PM

Yup, hard to justify hitting a guy in the face with your stick as a hockey play.

Another reason to love Alfie !

    Take that !

  8. sjsharks66 - Mar 2, 2013 at 5:27 PM

Who cares? It is on Rinaldo, Philly fans don’t even like him.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 2, 2013 at 6:57 PM

I used to hate him. But this season his game has come together nicely. He’s shown self-control, which he’s never done before, and it’s made him extremely effective. I used to compare him to Carcillo, but he’s NEVER shown anything resembling self-control. There are few players in the league who can get under your skin better than Rinaldo. He toes a fine line, but he rarely gets away with anything. In fact there have been several penalties called on him this season that were just laughable and based solely on reputation. Bottom line, this season Rinaldo has become a force. The more opposing players hate him, the more effective he is.

I think we don’t like wannabe Pens’ fans.

  9. dcent87 - Mar 2, 2013 at 5:29 PM

    False ^

  10. orangeandblack67 - Mar 2, 2013 at 5:43 PM

First off nunan all match penalties are reviewed. And I don’t know which flyers fans you spoke to sharks but Rino is very liked here in Philly.

  11. sjsharks66 - Mar 2, 2013 at 5:45 PM

You flyers fans are so wishy-washy. First you all claim to hate him. Now you all love him? Make up your minds.

  12. seagullrice - Mar 2, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Can anybody clarify why Rinaldo got a roughing penalty? Was it for the initial hit or did he do something I missed after getting cross checked in the face?

Regarding Rinaldo himself I think he’s come a long way since last season when he was pretty much just a goon. He’s actually playing fairly decent hockey and keeping his cool on the ice when people are trying to instigate and get him in trouble, he can also create some pretty big momentum swings with his play which is always a plus.

    • coronakid76 - Mar 2, 2013 at 6:13 PM

Think they were calling him for boarding.

  13. flyeredup - Mar 2, 2013 at 6:00 PM

And sissy boy Chris Neil didn’t answer the bell.

    • coronakid76 - Mar 2, 2013 at 6:15 PM

Neal had nothing to say when Simmonds got in the middle of his attempt to draw Shenn into a scuffle….he just ignored Simmonds and kept jawing at Shenn. Neal is on his way outta the league..He is only good for fights and they aren’t even guaranteed wins anymore.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Mar 3, 2013 at 4:01 AM

Neil is only good for fights? Since when? Neil is the Sean Avery of Canada, but with a minimal amount of class. Only fights guys his size or smaller but, as far as I know, he refrains from the cancer chirps.

Wow sjs I don’t know where you have been reading ur news from but Reno has always been loved in Philly u = D-BAG

  15. mclovinhockey - Mar 2, 2013 at 6:54 PM

If Rinaldos hit was dirty that would be one thing but a cross check to the face (for the idiots who think this is not something the league will look at think of Jamie Benn) for a clean hit is going to cost him

  16. phillyphanatic77 - Mar 2, 2013 at 7:06 PM

For those of you saying that the league shouldn’t take a look at this I say… what if the shoe was on the other foot? What if had been Rinaldo who had blatantly cross-checked Alfredsson in the head? I can guarantee fans across the league would be up-in-arms calling for Rinaldo’s head. Everyone here on PHT would be ranting about how dirty and classless the Flyers are. I don’t really have a problem with the play, because reactions like that mean Rinaldo’s doing his job. And I don’t care if he’s suspended or not, but Shannahan has to show some consistency and atleast review the play. Because we all know if it had been Rinaldo, the book would be thrown at him.

  17. bobhpine - Mar 2, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Alfie should get a game…you can’t cross check to the head…even if it’s a back jumping, mouth-breathing, Neanderthal stooge like zac rinaldo.

  18. jimw81 - Mar 3, 2013 at 10:56 AM

the crosscheck is just as dirty what Harry Zolnierczyk did. It’s amazing how several analysts called Alfredsson’s cross check to the head of Rinaldo “leadership” Plus Don Cherry’s being Ok with Alfredsson’s actions & getting tossed from game shows why he’s only coaching he does is in all star games and so irrelevant he’s becoming.

    • jimw81 - Mar 3, 2013 at 10:59 AM

if this happen to a maple leaf player or Canadian team cherry would go on a 5 minute tirade.
