Watch: Can Stars’ Benn expect call from NHL for cross check?

Mar 1, 2013, 1:53 AM EDT

Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn was ejected from Thursday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers for a vicious cross check to the back of winger Ryan Jones.

The incident occurred with four minutes remaining in the third period, with the Oilers comfortably ahead 5-1. That turned out to be the final score. For the Stars, a call from the NHL for further discipline on Benn might be coming. He was given a major for cross checking and a game misconduct, when he decked Jones from behind near the Stars bench.

Jones had previously bumped Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen while driving to the net.

The Edmonton Oilers offered a brief update on Jones after the game via the team’s official Twitter account.

“I’m sure they’re going to look at it. They look at any fives,” Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan told NHL.com of Benn’s penalty.

“It’s not a suspendable offense in my mind. Not a high hit or a head hit.”

Suspend that baby for embellishment! Good lord, he looked like a fish out of water!

No way! If he does then they should both be suspended. That was embarrassing to watch.

I’m not a fan of either team and in my mind that was a really cheap shot by Benn. If he wanted a piece of Jones then he should have been man enough to call him on not cheap shot the guy from behind! That was a very cowardly move on Benn’s part and definitely deserves a suspension….It’s pretty sad when a normally good player does something so stupid like this….

Ryan Jones is a baby and flopper.

Benn clearly just wanted to hit him…Jones clearly embellished.

I don’t think a suspension is warranted in any way.

Love the hear the Oiler’s fans whine! Remember the Clutterbuck hit from Hall? And watch, no Oiler will challenge Benn next season.

Yes it was a cross check, it was not a head shot, no blood and not run into the boards. No suspension IMO should’ve been a minor penalty only.

it was retalliation. not a cheap shot in any way, when you take a team’s goalie out you better have your head up because someone’s gonna see you out there. Benner got a 5 minuter for cross checking and a game misconduct, which is exactly what was deserved in my opinion. Kid should’ve gotten a sit for embellishment though, no doubt. you’re on ice, atleast try to keep your balance you girly man. oh, and get a haircut while you’re at it.

It was a cheap shot, but I could understand why Benn did it (still not acceptable, though). Losing 5-1 game at home, five minutes left, and a player with 87 career point goes hard to the net and gives a decent amount of contact to the goalie.
