At the risk of sounding slightly repetitive, to somekat and whoever else: In the 1979-80 regular season, when the Flyers went 35 games without a loss, THERE WAS NO OVERTIME OR SHOOTOUT. The game was over after 60 minutes regardless of the score. No way of knowing now if the Flyers might have lost any of their 10 ties in OT or a shootout, so to compare then and now we shall say their record unbeaten streak is also a point streak. Please take notes, and yes, you may use them during the exam. We want no one to fail, we want everyone to understand the material.

To be fair, the whole “regular-season” qualification didn’t just appear out of the blue with this streak. You see it a lot in football.

If by some absolute miracle they beat the regular season record but (likely) fall short of the single-season tally, there’s always going to be debate about it. If that’s the case it’s probably going to defer to the regular season streak first, single-season next. If it gets to that point, these two runs will be mentioned in the same breath for the foreseeable future.

But, given that they probably won’t win on Sunday (fourth 3-games-in-four nights, following a grueling OT game, playing their biggest rival, on the road), this really feels academic at this point.

Going back to the last year’s part of the streak, they had no losses in OTL, either. Just three SO losses. There’s no way in hell he’d ever count that, though.

You do realize that their OTL’s came from shootouts, right? They didn’t come from “lucky goals in OT.” So they made it all the way through regulation AND overtime tied.

Not that it matters, because you’re still going to find some aspect of the whole thing as you cling to your “days-gone-by” blanket for warmth at night.

As far as the streak, that’s the NHL’s fault for changing the scoring system so many times. And for having retarded shootouts. The Blackhawks have not lost while playing “Hockey” in 21 games this year.

The amazing stat that is getting no play. The blackhawks are 31-2-7 (i haven’t looked it up myself) with Johnny Oduya in the lineup since he was acquired from the Jets last year! Now to me, that says less about JO and more about how much longer than this streak that the Blackhawks have been dominating.

BUT, as we all know, run into a hot goalie in the playoffs……….or Mike Smith…….and you’re toast.

The Hawks havent lost including in overtime either. All 3 losses have been via a shootout. The shootout was something that wasnt around in 79/80. Games just ended in ties. That flyers team had 25 wins and 10 ties. So, you can compare the 2. But thanks for playin. FYI the longest winning streak is 17 games by the Penguins.

The Flyers do not have a “35 game streak without a regulation loss”. They have a 35 game UNBEATEN streak. That means they didn’t lose, including in overtime. The Hawks fell short weeks ago, story over

Wrong. If they lose in overtime, it’s a loss, the Flyers streak is safe. If the Flyers lost in overtime, it was a loss. Not an “overtime loss”. This entire streak is fraudulent. Maybe it’s the best streak since the NHL decided it was a good idea to hand out points after a team loses the game.

That was not the case for the Flyers record. If some guy scored a lucky goal in OT, it was loss. Not an “overtime loss”, which apparently is different.

Once again, people are mixing various separate records. The Flyers’ record is 35 games with a point in one season (also known as an undefeated streak since they had ties in those days). The Hawks have set a new record for most such games from the start of a season, 21 and counting. To add the Hawks’ finish from last season puts it in a different category of longest such streak over one or more seasons. That mark is also the Flyers’ 35. The Flyers’ single season record will stand unless the Hawks go 15 more games without losing in reg. time.

Am I the only one that notices this crap about how they’re “approaching” the Flyers’ 35 games? Hey guess what people: losing in the playoffs ends the streak ok? Just because they managed to get a point in a few straight games to end last season, before losing in the first round, doesn’t mean jack. Yes yes I’m not blind to the ridiculous and impressive nature of what they’re doing now. But let’s be real people: the streak is at 21. NOT 27.

The hawks are on fire right now. However, what about when playoffs roll through. Thats the time you have to get hot. Just look at the kings last year, not a great season at all and got hot in the playoffs.

Im very interested to see how this all plays out in the end!

The main thing I take from this game: Columbus is the best bad team in the league. They put out so much effort, did an excellent job for about 55 minutes, and come out with another loss. Like John Davidson said, they don’t know how to finish yet. Without most of their top 6 defensemen they managed to slow the best team in hockey. Say what you want about the Blue Jackets being doormats in the standings, they don’t give up easy points.

As for the Blackhawks, they didn’t play their best and still came out with another W. Sometimes when you’re hot you just get all the bounces. But that Toews no look pass on the winner was awesome. He faked out everyone on the ice except Seabrook. Excellent effort from a top notch captain.

Columbus lost, but they looked good tonight- that was a hell of a show they put on. No shame in that OT loss.
