Feaster: We didn’t think we could lose O’Reilly to waivers, NO MORE QUESTIONS

The Calgary Flames don’t believe they put themselves in a position to lose Ryan O’Reilly to waivers when they signed him to an offer sheet yesterday. Besides, Colorado matched O’Reilly’s offer, so the whole thing is moot anyway, the club maintains.

The following is a statement from Flames general manager Jay Feaster:

“Prior to tendering the offer sheet for Ryan O’Reilly we, as a hockey operations department, examined whether there were any impediments to our successfully securing the services of the player including, but not limited to, his having played in the KHL after the start of the current NHL season.

“Our interpretation of the Article 13 transition rules governing restricted free agents (‘RFA’),  and the applicability of Article 13.23 under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement to such RFA’s was, and continues to be, different than the NHL’s current interpretation as articulated to us this morning. Moreover, throughout our discussions, the player’s representative shared our interpretation and position with respect to the non-applicability of Article 13.23.

“While we were prepared to advance our position with the NHL, in light of Colorado’s having matched the offer sheet it is now an academic point. As such, we will have no further comment on the matter, the player, or the offer sheet process.”

Of course, even if the Flames did believe they wouldn’t have lost O’Reilly to waivers doesn’t mean they would’ve been in the clear. The NHL apparently saw things differently. Didn’t Feaster check with the league beforehand? Who cares if O’Reilly’s agent interpreted the rules the same way the Flames interpreted them?

Feaster may not want to talk about this anymore, but we get the feeling Calgary reporters might have a few questions anyway.

Feaster is as good as gone. Canadian city reporters will not let this go, ever.

True enough. Anyone who doesn’t believe that can ask Brian Burke.

does anyone know the real truth???

    u mad feaster

  4. phillyphanatic77 - Mar 1, 2013 at 4:27 PM

Nice job trying to convince everyone you knew what you were doing! It doesn’t change the fact that you were wong, and if the Avs hadn’t matched O’Reilly would be in Columbus (or whoever is first on the waiver wire). I applaud the attempt to bring a legitimate center to Calgary, it’s just the person making the attempt is totally clueless. You could’ve lost a #1 center (on Calgary) and a probable lottery pick (plus a third) for NO RETURN.

He sure looks like a feaster

  7. jessethegreat - Mar 1, 2013 at 5:10 PM

Incompetence! In order to run a franchise properly isn’t it pertinent to understand the rules?

  8. pensfan603 - Mar 1, 2013 at 5:18 PM

o’reilley is overrated so who cares, colorado just wasted a ton on him and calgary forced a division rival to pay a ton for a what second line center good work him, If i was a GM in this league all i would always send offer sheats to RFAs on Division rivals forcing them to sign their players to outlandish contracts.

    • thailer35 - Mar 1, 2013 at 5:25 PM

Do I really have to explain how that wouldn’t work out for you?

      • govtminion - Mar 1, 2013 at 5:57 PM

He’s already got a better plan than Scott Howson ever did, give him that at least.

    • jtrain1966 - Mar 2, 2013 at 12:37 PM

Yeah, & you would probably have a hard time getting anything accomplished ! Because, if you P!$$#D enough GM’s off, they probably wouldn’t want to do any deals with you ! Just something to think about !

  9. bucrightoff - Mar 1, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Unfortunetly Flames ownership is happy as long as they are making cash. Hence why they keep finishing 9th.

I’ve never seen a man with a more approriate last name.

    • weenerman - Mar 1, 2013 at 7:27 PM

I dunno. Charles Wang is certainly a candidate. Grant Clitsome’s enemies may also beg to differ.

lets just hope there isnt another lockout so we never have to know what the ruling would actually be

…thats what we call a crowd pleaser ladies and gents

  12. luz56 - Mar 1, 2013 at 6:47 PM

Don’t blame Feaster for the mess Sutter put the Flames in. This team has been set back 5 to 7 years by the Sutterite colony

    • jtrain1966 - Mar 2, 2013 at 12:39 PM

But, Feaster could’ve corrected that a couple of years ago !

  13. thehighcountrybear - Mar 1, 2013 at 6:58 PM

luz56: That would explain the plight LA found themselves in at the end of the playoffs…

    • soupy19 - Mar 1, 2013 at 8:29 PM

Yeah, because Sutter had everything to do with putting that LA roster together

  14. luz56 - Mar 1, 2013 at 7:04 PM

thehighcountrybear…coaching and managing are two different things… As a coach he also has a short shelf life.

  15. thehighcountrybear - Mar 1, 2013 at 7:26 PM

So, how many Sutter managers came out of colony…?

  16. thehighcountrybear - Mar 1, 2013 at 8:41 PM

Nooooo…but the same hockey mind that managed, coached, then enjoyed a parade and a shiny new ring. The Sutter bashing is without merit, and generally the product of those satisfied with working tired clichés to death…

  17. thehighcountrybear - Mar 1, 2013 at 8:53 PM

I know this, Darryl Sutter’s enjoying the Flame’s embarrassment while howling over Feaster’s amateurish gaffe and fraudulent effort at denial. Hoooooweeee…

  18. luz56 - Mar 1, 2013 at 9:04 PM

thehighcountrybear…. Really? I follow the Flames and I am a seasons ticket holder. The sh%t show that was Sutter was down right embarrassing. Hell his own brother stopped speaking to him. Trading draft picks for over the hill players, trading up and coming stars for garbage was his forte. Please if your going to comment make sense

  19. thehighcountrybear - Mar 1, 2013 at 10:43 PM

What…somebody who pays good money to buy season tickets to the Flames games is suddenly the arbiter of what constitutes ‘making sense?’ Did anything hit you in the ass when you left the store…like your change? And, it was Darryl not returning Brent’s efforts attempts to speak in the aftermath of his discharge…why would he, Brent and the clown they brought in to replace Darryl were part of the same hanging party. But who brought the shiny silverware to Viking this past summer we may we ask…

  20. ron05342 - Mar 1, 2013 at 10:43 PM

Peter Griffin fails as a hockey GM.

    Next, please.

  21. blomfeld - Mar 1, 2013 at 11:07 PM

SHOULD FEASTER GET A MEMBERSHIP AT THE GYM ?

Regardless of whether or not you support the Flames, I suspect that everyone’s answer to this simple question would be an unequivocal yes ! To hell with O’Reilly I say, as the bottom line remains that Feaster is overseeing the demise of what was once one of the NHL’s premiere powerhouses. Just like his personal presentation, his performance managing this proud team is an absolute disgrace, not to mention a “kick in the teeth” to the decent and values-driven folk of southern Alberta. Feaster and his cadre of incompetent lieutenants should be “liquidated” immediately and replaced with a new and vibrant leadership, whose veins pulsate with the “can do” blood that is indigenous to Alberta! I’m personally an ardent LA Kings fan and yet I know myself that Jarome Iginla is one of the absolute “greatest” players in the game today. Therefore it positively sickens me that some freak like Feaster is standing between him and what could be!

  22. bills4 - Mar 2, 2013 at 2:59 PM

Feaster the beaster! What an idiot! Time to get a job with TSN!

  23. jkaflagg - Mar 2, 2013 at 5:07 PM

Would have been the biggest waiver blunder since the Chargers lost Jack Kemp to the Buffalo Bills back in the early 60s…..

  24. qpla - Mar 2, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Sorry i’m dumb, but why doesn’t O’Reilly have to clear waivers before joining the Avs? Cause he is an RFA?

    • jernster21 - Mar 2, 2013 at 9:58 PM

      Yes…the Avs own his rights.

  25. sw19womble - Mar 3, 2013 at 11:01 AM

Blimey, Harry Potter has let himself go a bit, hasn’t he…..

  26. jimw81 - Mar 3, 2013 at 11:07 AM

If i was a Flames fan, i would be embarrassed and be angry with ownership for having a gm that doesnt understand the rules of the cba. I bet anyone Feaster would totally make a Briere for Bouwmeester trade
