Watch Mike Milbury critique Alex Ovechkin

Feb 27, 2013, 9:51 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers are really handing it to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday. When things go poorly for the Caps, the attention frequently shifts to their highly paid star Alex Ovechkin.

That was the case during the second intermission of tonight’s game, as Mike Milbury provided this passionate critique of Ovechkin’s effort and production:

Milbury has weighed in on the famous 27-year-old several times before. Here are some choice cuts:

Is he still elite?

Has he been used correctly?

Looking back at Bruce Boudreau’s firing

Crosby vs. Ovechkin – the next Magic vs. Bird?

  1. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Feb 27, 2013 at 9:54 PM

I prefer not to watch Mike Milbury do anything, though it does beat listening to him.

  2. steelers88 - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:10 PM

Can NBCSN fire this guy already!?!? I’m tired of hearing about him. First him compares Crosby and Malkin to crack addicts and now he is critiquing Oviechkin’s game?

    • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:49 PM

That has been taken so out of context by Pens fans, he was comparing their constant need to play up and down offensive hockey to crack addicts constant need for a fix. He didn’t call them crack addicts. It may not be pc but it’s pretty accurate. Pens fans just hate the guy cause he’s not afraid to tell it like it is, especially when it comes to Crosby. He’s not eloquent, sometimes he says ridiculous things, but I’d rather listen to him than Pierre Mcguire popping a bone cone over the Pens all day.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:51 PM

Plus, why would NBC fire a dude when ppl tune in to see what kind of outrageous thing he’ll say next?

      • tuberippin - Feb 28, 2013 at 2:10 AM

As an Islanders fan, I’d rather drive nails into my ear canal than listen to Mike Milbury.

      • jpelle82 - Feb 28, 2013 at 9:38 AM

its funny to me when flyers fans say mguirre has a bone for the pens when all i hear from him is how much he loves giroux and the rookies couterier and read. i guess you hear what you want when your on your side of the fence but either way i cant stand mcguire – he has a bone for whoever is on the ice it seems like at any given time. he sounds like a pedophile with all his “knowledge” of minor league hockey in canada…he takes pride in following little boys around which is just obnoxious and creepy. “oh i saw him play when he was twelve in middle of nowhere, saskatchewan midget league this and that, i had a bone for him then and still do”…gets old and annoying.

      • hockeywithdrawal - Feb 28, 2013 at 10:21 AM

I think Flyers fans like him – if I was you I’d love him. He’s brutally baised…he LOVES the Flyers. I’d like to see him taken out of the nationally broadcasted games and take a job with a local Flyers station. He’d be great for that.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 28, 2013 at 1:34 PM

I heard Mcguire praising the Flyers in the last Pens-Flyers game too. I’m not deaf or oblivious, but that’s the exception and not the rule. It also helped that the Flyers were leading and playing a solid offensive game when he made those comments. When the Pens came back Mcguire reverted back to his normal self. He LOVES the Pens but he’s also smart enough to know that he cant constantly praise one side during a neutral broadcast.

As for Milbury, he doesn’t dislike the Flyers like he does the Pens, we all know that. But that’s because he likes physical hockey over finesse hockey. Also, he can’t stand whiners or players who don’t respect the game (ie Crosby and Ovi, respectively). Milbury says dumb stuff but NBC doesn’t care bc fans come on here and other forums and talk about it. It garners attention for the network and PHT. Islanders fans hating Milbury is completely understandable as he traded away the likes of Zigmund Palffy, Zdeno Chara, Roberto Luongo, Olli Jokinen, Bryan McCabe, Bryan Berard, and Spezza (2nd pick) for the likes of Alexei Yashin and to keep Dipietro (plus give him his absurd deal). I would hate him too if he set my franchise back 10 years.

    • steelpenbucs87 - Feb 28, 2013 at 9:37 AM

I hate Mike Milbury too, but you’re cherry picking the “crack addicts” line a bit.

  3. capsfan19 - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:11 PM

I hate to say it but i think hes right. Ovi is the team captain? That right there laughable and seems to be more of a political decision that hes the captain (marketing ted leonsis garbage) rather than a player with more cajones.

    • ravenscaps48 - Feb 27, 2013 at 11:39 PM

He’s the Captain because Crosby is Captain. That’s been obvious for years

      • soj83 - Feb 28, 2013 at 4:56 AM

Crosby knows where the defensive zone is.

  4. capsfan19 - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Although I agree with you, since you posted that three times I had to give you a thumbs down.

  6. mclovinhockey - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Mike should be in jail. Scum bag….. But he is right. AO is playing heartless hockey. Take a page from torts book and sit that diving over rated drama queen.

    • jeremyroenickdanceparty - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:28 PM

He’s been benched before and the only thing its ever led to is a coaching change.

  7. broadstbully33 - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:15 PM

That dive rivals Cindy’s diving. I expected more from ovi oh well

    • hockeywithdrawal - Feb 28, 2013 at 10:18 AM

How good of you to bring Crosby into an article that had nothing to do with him. The Flyers don’t dive though, huh….

  8. govtminion - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:22 PM

It pains me to agree with Milbury on anything, but… he’s pretty much dead-on here. Ovechkin was terrible tonight- hell, the Caps were terrible tonight overall, the new backup goalie (Grabauer?) aside. I know they played last night, but… ugh, that was one of the worst hockey games I’ve watched in a long time.

    • tuberippin - Feb 28, 2013 at 2:13 AM

John Tavares and Steven Stamkos are here for you.

  9. seawurd - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:23 PM

I agree that NBC has been horrible for hockey. And Dingleberry is the worst. However, I am glad to see someone pointing out the cry baby diva attitudes of the big name players.
Ovie is not the only one. We all know what teams have talented ” sissy” players. It was just kind of refreshing to see someone getting fired up about it.
As a long time hockey fan I hope the next generation of players nut up and shut up and just play the damn game.

  10. flyeredup - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:29 PM

Crapitals stink. Hendricks didn’t want to get whooped by Rinaldo again.

  11. hockeyissweet - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:42 PM

no thanks, id rather listen to ovechkin critique milbury.

  12. ethanmacleod1685 - Feb 27, 2013 at 10:49 PM

Why doesn’t this work for ipad

  13. gbar22 - Feb 27, 2013 at 11:16 PM

Do people really tune in for Mike or for the hockey game? It would appear the majority cannot stand anything this guy has to say about hockey. NBC should do us all a favor and get rid of him because he lends no credibility whatsoever to their coverage.

    • govtminion - Feb 28, 2013 at 2:23 AM

No argument, but NBC is trying their best to match CBC, and so they need a mindless blowhard to babble about things he doesn’t actually understand. The difference is that Milbury dresses like he doesn’t have mental trauma.

  14. blomfeld - Feb 27, 2013 at 11:31 PM

I personally don’t care for Mike Milbury, yet everything he says in this piece is pure fact. Time and time again, Ovechkin continues to show himself as being nothing but an immature, unworldly, childish, self-centered, unsophisticated, goof ball. His behavior as captain of the Capitals is positively disgraceful and even worse, it’s a kick in the teeth to the many selfless and glorious Soviet greats who trail blazed before. If the Capital’s ownership has any brains, then they’ll have a “little chat” with this idiot and put things right. Either that or the clown finds himself out of work, while his BS contract goes through the shredder, with he himself to follow if there’s any lip!

Here’s an example friends of what Russian/Soviet hockey is meant to be like …

    • ravenscaps48 - Feb 27, 2013 at 11:40 PM

Oh good lord. I thought you were banned?

      • barkar942 - Feb 27, 2013 at 11:49 PM

Looks like the ten game suspension may be over? LOL!

      • barkar942 - Feb 27, 2013 at 11:55 PM

And by the way, Milbury is 100% correct on his assessment of the lack of effort by Ovie. I’ll bet you his assessment of Richards and Gaborik right now wouldn’t be much more kind.

      • Jack Bauer 24 - Feb 28, 2013 at 3:09 AM

I know ravenscaps…. just ignore him he’s a non factor on here lol

      • joethorntonisclutch - Feb 28, 2013 at 4:05 PM

Blomfeld leaves the best comments, especially during last years LA cup run. Totally awesome.

  15. flyeredup - Feb 27, 2013 at 11:47 PM

Why do my Fellow Flyer Fans make every post about the Pens? Get real! This is a post to talk about how “The Average 8″ Ovi stinks. The Average 8 is the most overrated player in hockey. Fellow Flyers…..don’t turn this into an anti Pens debate. We whooped them last week.

    Lets Get FLYEREDUP!

  16. kpickup - Feb 28, 2013 at 1:04 AM

This game Ovi was bad. Last game he was mediocre at best. But obviously he’s not always washed up and average seeing as he got a hat trick on Saturday. Milbury only seems to see the really really bad and chooses to ignore the occasionally good, which is annoying.

  17. dawglb - Feb 28, 2013 at 2:29 AM

Mike Milbury is refreshing to listen to. I understand that people may not like what he has to say, but he calls it like he sees it. Mike has earned his right to speak his mind. He played the game tough, and he analyzes it tough….

  18. qsnavior - Feb 28, 2013 at 6:25 AM

I always feel bad for Keith Jones, Milbury always makes a total jackass out of himself and over reacts (even though he’s right sometimes), and that little idiot on the left of the podium has the worst jokes/closing lines in broadcasting.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 28, 2013 at 1:39 PM

Keith Jones is the man. Great sense of humor, not that you’d ever hear it with Milbury ranting.

  19. obnoxiousDCfan - Feb 28, 2013 at 6:45 AM

A video of Mike Milbury talking about Ovechkin? Must be a day that ends in “Y”.

  20. capsfan19 - Feb 28, 2013 at 6:48 AM

Didnt mean to post that 3 times! I guess it was a glitch.
Ugh, this is tough to watch your favorite team just crumble man. The flyers are a beatable team, no reason why we couldnt handle them. Need some more grit and guys that can handle the physicality, especially since we’ll be playing them alot more next year

  21. jcgtrinity - Feb 28, 2013 at 9:09 AM

Hey Milbury, I don’t mind you rightly calling out Ov on his antics – but why must you bring Almighty God into the conversation? Maybe you want to pray for Ov instead?

  22. deadrabbit79 - Feb 28, 2013 at 9:49 AM

Coming from a guy who traded Luongo so he could draft Dipietro, traded Chara, traded the pick that was to draft Spezza, traded McCabe AND Bertuzzi for Trevor Linden, shall i go on?

  23. hockeywithdrawal - Feb 28, 2013 at 10:17 AM

NBC is hurting it’s own reputation by keeping Milbury. He needs to take a full time job with the Flyers organization. If I was a Flyer fan, I’d love him (from many of the comments it seems they are ok with him).

  24. pobm - Feb 28, 2013 at 11:15 AM

Mike Milbury is an Ovie hater & a bloviating oik to boot. I’d like to see him take a stick from behind to the face under the visor. Give the Caps a break; 3 games in 4 days (Ovie had a hat trick & 4 points the day before.) Five wins in their last eight. Yes, the whole team was flat last night. How about having three coaches, w/three systems, in less than 1 & 1/8th seasons, with no training camp to learn the newest. Check the your press game notes Mike; Ovie stats in the past three years continue to place him among the league elite. That is more than I can say about your commentary.

  25. ducksk - Feb 28, 2013 at 12:02 PM

Milberries is a jacka**. Is he the best NBC can get? that said, he is right on in his assessment of Ovie in that game. Ovirated!

  26. blackfoot11 - Feb 28, 2013 at 12:20 PM

As a Caps fan, I would have to agree with Milbury about Ovi last night. However, there were a number of other players that “dogged it” last night, that deserve the same assessment. The Caps allowed the Flyers to do what they wanted. All facets of their game were non-existent, could be just one of those nights, or roster changes to fit what Oates needs. I think it is a bit of both. Finally, the “C” needs to be give to Troy Brouwer. He is the true leader of the team and gives his all every night. This is Ovi’s last year as Captain. Count on that.

  27. convincedofthehex - Feb 28, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Any player that can go over the glass, in to the stands and beat a Ranger fan with his own shoe is OK with me.

  28. lostpuppysyndrome - Feb 28, 2013 at 1:01 PM

It’s too bad they didn’t hire Brian Burke. Could you imagine him sandwiched between Milberries and JR? TVs would explode all over the country if that happened.

  29. cspsrbums - Feb 28, 2013 at 1:01 PM

Brouwer talks about his players and ex players to much for guys to believe in him he needs to worry about keeping his mouth shut and play hockey.

    • blackfoot11 - Feb 28, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Dude was part of the core that helped the “Hawks hoist the Cup. Ask any ‘Hawks fan about Brouwer’s skill and work ethic. He’s has experienced the one thing the Caps organization has not. The man was asked a question about Semin and gave an honest answer. Alot of players know the same and would shy away from the truth. Leaders don’t sugar coat anything.

  30. cspsrbums - Feb 28, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Caps have a whole team full of 3rd and 4th liners GMGM has gotten rid of the rest of the talent this team had and has gotten nothing for them. Half this team is still playing not to be sent down.

  31. giantssb42champs - Feb 28, 2013 at 1:14 PM

Milbury should be relegated to hockey dad status. Oh wait, that didn’t turn out so well either…

  32. jhuck92 - Feb 28, 2013 at 1:52 PM

it sounds like milbury wasted his top fantasy pick on ovi

  33. bubba466 - Feb 28, 2013 at 3:40 PM

Milbury – to be a man you don’t have to go into the stands and beat someone with his own shoe. You’re a loser – as a player , coach and GM. Never won a Stanley Cup. Life time points 238 – OV is at 694 in less games. You are a Don Cherry wannabe, at least Don is ancient so we can blame his stupidity on that – you’re just an idiot. Be a Big Man like Mike, “be like Mike” – be a loser.

  34. cspsrbums - Feb 28, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Yes when Brouwer call his players out during the lock out for speaking their mind about the lockout it doesn’t help him in the locker room Semin scores 30 goals a year . Brouwer can’t get to 20
