Video: Leafs’ Brown gets tossed for boarding Habs’ Gorges

Feb 27, 2013, 8:37 PM EDT

Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens fans are in a heated debate about whether Mike Brown deserved a five-minute major and game misconduct for a hit on Josh Gorges. Keith Jones and Mike Milbury discuss it in the video below:

As you can see, the check happened with less than a minute left in the first period of Wednesday’s game, so we’ll see if Gorges suffers any ill effects from the hit.

If so, young players might want to keep an eye on Brown, who broke Tye McGinn‘s orbital bone in a fight.

The Habs are already without Raphael Diaz (concussion), so it could be a costly couple games if this is a serious situation.

How? How is that a five? It’s a nudge almost from the side. Garbage call.

May as well just take away checking if that’s gonna be a penalty.

Wish I could thumb that up more sabatimus!!!

Looked like it hurt… Wait till a player has the puck before you lay your hands on him

Call the cops and have Brown put in jail.
Should not have been a penalty never mind a major.

Untimely shove while out of position…two maybe, hardly a game [ used as an excuse to get a fractious and willing player out of the game ].

A rather clean hit. I could see perhaps two since the contact was a little bit early, but five and a game is a joke. Just another case of a ref making a reactionary call based on a player hurt during a fairly clean hit.

    Terrible call !!!
The refs were brutal all night. What garbage.

If Georges was Hossa Mr. Brown would be going to see Shanny.

Seemed like a proper call to me. Must be Lesfs fan whining here.

    • sabatimus - Feb 27, 2013 at 11:03 PM

      I hate both teams.

  9. mclovinhockey - Feb 28, 2013 at 8:12 AM

I do not see how people think its clean. He pushed him from behind while Georges was in a bad position without the puck. It was roughing, boarding and interference.

Hockey is no longer the sport where you can knock a guys teeth out like you could in the 70s. The ref made a split sec judgment call and although I think there were plenty of botched calls (like Prust dropping his gloves and not getting called and that penalty shot should have never happened cause there was contact with the puck and the guy was never touched illegally, just fell on his own), this was the right call. It was a stupid and dangerous play by Brown and I say that hating both teams.

I think it was ” a stupid and dangeous play” by Georges. Did he not know Brown was there? On a play like that you have to know the other guy might put the body on you. Georges looked like he was totally unprepared for any contact. That’s not Brown’s fault.

        Sorry about mispelling Gorges.
