The Flyers streak was within one season, so the corresponding Hawks streak is 19, so I still believe my math is flawless for the single-season record. Including last season makes it a separate record. The article is correct for the multi-season record. There was a similar dust-up in baseball in 2006 when Jimmy Rollins had a hitting streak carry over to the next season, and folks had to decide if his streak was 36 or 38 games.

Lets also not forget that 4 of the previous 5 teams that started their season with points in 13 or more games won the Stanley Cup that season. The top 3 best starts ever finished the season as Stanley Cup champions.

Here’s the thing, they’ve still got areas in which they can improve. Most notably, their power play could be better. They’ve gotten a fair amount of 5 on 3s, which helps their number.

What you’re seeing now is the effect of their depth. Keith and Seabrook don’t have to play 27 minutes a night. Toews and Hossa don’t have to be on every penalty kill. Which means they have the legs to go after all the trash and rebounds in their own end that killed them last year. Which means they can chase and keep pucks in the offensive zone.

Yes, of course this means nothing if they don’t win the Cup this year, and they’ve basically set themselves up for a Cup-or-failure year. But if you had to choose between 16-0-3 and, say, 10-5-4, how would you want your favorite team to start?

And speaking of simpler minds, mine says that since the Flyers of 1979-80 set the NHL record with a 35-game points streak (25 wins and 10 ties, I believe), and the Hawks’ streak is up to 19, that would be a difference of somewhere around 16 or so, not the 10 mentioned in this post and the AP story it refers to.
