im not interested in what he can do, if we were looking for a man to plug in we wouldnt have traded lovejoy or let strait go this off season. i wouldnt be surprised if eaton is one day a d coach for pens organization down the road. he will be a good guy to have in practice but i dont see him contributing too much on the ice. and 750k is league minimum for a veteran

I remember back when Eaton started his career with the Flyers. Then of course moved on to the darkside and won a cup. Steady, stay-at-home type and will provide some solid depth for the Pens. Not a bad pickup.

Yeah this kind of surprised me too. I thought the back end of the Blue line was already to crowded as it is (or at least it is until they wise up and start scratching Engo).

So now the final pairing will be made up of some combination of Eaton, Despres, Borts, and Engelland? Despres and Borts should be playing as is.

There is a possible trade coming.

The Lovejoy trade was made because while he is a decent player, he does not have any traits that make him a more attractive option to start over guys like Bortuzzo and Despres who need playing time and mentoring from a more experienced veteran……Which is what Eaton was brought in for.

The move has very little to do with what Eaton will produce statistically. That 750k is meant to tutor Simon Despres and to a lesser extent Robert Bortuzzo so they are more sound in their own end. He will act as a player coach to them during both practice and games.

In addition, the Eaton signing also allows them to move Engelland. Bortuzzo is not the fighter Engelland is but he is better defensively and still brings a fiesty attitude that is willing to get in opponents faces and trade blows if neccessary.

Engelland will probably end up being part of the deal that lands the top 6 winger the penguins need to plug onto the Malkin line or onto the Crosby line after shifting Kunitz to the Malkin Line.

I like Eaton a lot – but did we need this, though? Something isn’t adding up. Traded Lovejoy, but brought up Reese who did fine, so we still have 8 defenders (although I think they sent Reese back down)…did I miss something, or is there a possible trade coming I wonder.

Eaton hopefully will give the Pens some veteran leadership and be a calming influence both on the blue line and in the locker room… something they’ve lacked lately (especially when they play the Flyers).

I am interested to see what Eaton can do. Obviously he will be a depth d-man for the Pens but hopefully he is still who he once was back in ’09.
