Voracek named NHL’s first star of the week

Feb 25, 2013, 12:12 PM EDT

Jakub Voracek

Philadelphia forward Jakub Voracek has been named the NHL’s first star of the week after piling up 11 points in four games – a stretch that included his first career hat trick Wednesday against the Penguins.

Voracek, 23, leads the Flyers with 22 points and has led a much-needed offensive turnaround for his team.

“Skating is a key to his success,” Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette said of Voracek, per CSNPhilly.com. “He’s a talented guy. When he uses his speed and quickness, he is able to generate a lot of offense. Since he’s been here, he’s gotten the opportunity to move the puck around with some decent players.

“And get on a first power-play unit and handle the puck a lot in situations where he deserves to be. There is an experience and process where you mature through time in the National Hockey League.

“He was young when he first got here. … You grow and develop and continue to gain insight into the league with experience to develop your skills. That’s where he has gone.”

Voracek – the seventh overall pick in the 2007 draft – was traded from Columbus to Philadelphia, along with a first- and third-round selection, in the summer of 2011 for Jeff Carter.

The NHL’s second and third stars of the week were Tampa Bay forward Steven Stamkos and Ottawa goalie Ben Bishop, respectively.

Stamkos had one goal in each of the Lightning’s four games last week and has vaulted to the top of the NHL’s scoring race, with 29 points in 18 games.

Bishop, meanwhile, went 3-0-0 with a 2.03 goals-against average and .931 save percentage while making Sens fans feel a tiny bit better about their team’s string of injuries.

      • jpelle82 - Feb 25, 2013 at 12:59 PM

crosby has 6 games with 3 pts this year. other than the goose egg the other day against FLA crosby’s had a great february 21 pts in feb alone – voracek has 22 pts all season so i wouldnt get too excited with your comparisons.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:03 PM

we are very excited considering a journeyman is being compared to susposedly one of the best players in the world ! You pens fans are so sensative !

      • windmiller4 - Feb 25, 2013 at 5:35 PM

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:01 PM

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:50 PM

just the fact that you use the word retarded tells me your a dbag !

    • jpelle82 - Feb 25, 2013 at 12:53 PM

well he has giroux to thank for this, makes you wonder if they really needed to pay hartnell so much this off season, seems like they could plug in anybody on the top line with 28 and get production like this. now that Giroux is starting to get his game back that is- finally cracked the top 20 in pts this week after a slow start.

      • rossthebosspalmer - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:06 PM

Voracek’s current hot streak started before he was put back on Giroux’s line. He was the one who awoke Giroux from a slump, not vice versa.

    • sportsfreak13 - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:07 PM

First in our division. Captain who is second in points and assists. Yea I’m not too jealous of voraceks great week. Congrats though because the flyers have defiantly come out of their scoring slump.

  3. jpdoc26 - Feb 25, 2013 at 12:38 PM

    Voracek also named ugliest player

    • coopjr - Feb 25, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Other than Kennedy, Malkin, and Crosby?

      • hockeywithdrawal - Feb 25, 2013 at 2:05 PM

Kennedy – hands down. He’s missing a nose, and just has one massive nostril. Can’t beat that.

    • orangandblack - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:05 PM

Voracek had a great week and first start is well deserved. That being said, you’re right, dude is ugly as sin. Good thing I don’t watch hockey to judge other men for their looks.

      • flyeredup202 - Feb 25, 2013 at 3:40 PM

        Just makes you think…
I know its few weeks out but do you put Reader back up there with G and Jake or do you leave Jake Hartsy and G alone?
Read was nice addtion on that top line…
I was and still not a fan of Jake, he skates with the puck alot longer then he needs too and turns it over alot…. but that gets over looked when he plays like this…

  4. buffalomafia - Feb 25, 2013 at 12:41 PM

Voracek aside! Ryan Miller would look good in a Flyers jersey???!!! Just throwing it out there?

    • coopjr - Feb 25, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Make that Bobby Ryan, and I’m on board.

    • steelpenbucs87 - Feb 25, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Voracek seems to make a living off the Pens… not sure why but it seems some guys just have other teams numbers (similar to Geno against Tampa when he’s healthy) or Sid against Buffalo.

  5. jeremyroenickdanceparty - Feb 25, 2013 at 12:54 PM

I’m not surprised at all. He’s always in great position, just needed to start shooting more.

  6. bricktop02 - Feb 25, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Yes Miller would look good in black & orange.

  7. misterchainbluelightning - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:01 PM

Where’s the guy that said the only worthwhile player Philly got in those trades last year was Simmonds?

    • ml3939 - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:31 PM

It was Jack Bauer 24, I know because I called him out on it and many inane statements he made.

  8. mclovinhockey - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:15 PM

Good work Ace! I kept saying he was my favourite accusation last year. His first year in orange and black looked so much like girouxs rookie year made me wonder what he could do if he had some time on the top line.

Oh @ buffalomania. Miller would look great in a flyers uniform. Im sure the two teams could work out a fair trade

  9. sportsfreak13 - Feb 25, 2013 at 1:34 PM

The life of a troll must be a sad lonely life. Guys like eigglesnosuperbowls just posting garbage in order to to get a reaction from someone on a post to then just constantly hurl insults their way is a serious sad cry for attention. If you ignore the troll though people he might just go away. See once you take away the attention he so desperatley needs hell go elsewhere. The fact that someone needs to denegrate someone else (be it specific team or individual) on these boards to feel better about themselves is disapointing and troubling. I hope you get the help you need eigglesnosuperbowls.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Feb 25, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Yeah it’s really annoying to go to every Flyers or Pens page and see the same childish bickering. Especially when most of it is totally unoriginal. Of course I’m guilty of it too, but usually only when I see a point made that’s so outrageous that I can’t bring myself to let it be. Mostly I just wanna talk hockey. And that should be the aim of all of us on PHT, not to constantly insult eachother. It’s too bad that so many Flyers fans feel the need to incessantly attack the Pens (and vice-versa) when most pages don’t even center on the rivalry. Sportsfreak13 is an exception. Philadelphia fans, overall, are an intelligent group but you may not know it from some of the comments on this and other sites. We dont have to like eachother, as I despise the Pens, but we also don’t need to be at eachothers throats unprovoked. Maybe eigglesnosuperbowls would feel better if the Birds finally won a SB. I know I would.

As for Voracek… the dude has been lights out. Just piling up points. I think two things really spurred his development: the change of scenery from Columbus to Philly and the presence of Jagr last season. In Columbus it was almost impossible for him to play his game, as you can’t be a great setup man with no one to setup. Coming to Philly he’s been surrounded with way more talent. And the effect Jagr had on this extremely young squad was something you can’t put a price on. He definitely helped Giroux and Voracek reach new levels of production while carrying themselves like pros. And Voracek’s vision, stick-handling, and use of his body are very Jagr-esque. The Voracek-Giroux-Hartnell line should continue to pile up points. And eventhough their record might not indicate it, this team is built for the long haul. I’m glad Homer didn’t have a knee jerk reaction to the slow start and start moving pieces bc their top forwards are all hitting their stride now. If Couturier can get his offense going then the Flyers will have 3 very dangerous lines. Look for this team to continue their turnaround.

      • hockeywithdrawal - Feb 25, 2013 at 3:48 PM

I will quit commenting on Flyers fans – honestly.

      • sportsfreak13 - Feb 25, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Thanks man. Also congrats on your latest victory against us. I didn’t comment on that article because it was full of trolls, but your team got into our heads again (just like the playofffs) and it was one extremely entertaining game. Can’t wait till the next one, sometime next week i think.

  10. ml3939 - Feb 25, 2013 at 3:05 PM

I have to agree with Pens’ that have showed so far regarding trolling, it is definitely a Flyers fan proactively instigating. The Pens’ fans that have commented have been gracious. I can’t even slight the guy who called Voracek ugly because as a Flyers fan I was under the impression the Blue Jackets scouted in one of those Capital One commercials with Vikings. I would be the first to go after a Pens’ troll or wannabe Pens’ troll but eigglesnosuperbowls is clearly “troll of the day,” essentially trolling his own team.
