Ovechkin nets first hat trick since 2011; Caps beat Devils 5-1

Feb 23, 2013, 3:59 PM EDT

It’d been a while since Alex Ovechkin scored a hat trick in a game. Thankfully for him, the New Jersey Devils were able to help out this afternoon.

Ovechkin scored three times and added an assist in helping the Caps beat Johan Hedberg and the Devils 5-1 in Washington. As Stephen Whyno of The Washington Times shares, it was his first hat trick since January 22, 2011 and his first trick at home since February 7, 2010. Safe to say this kind of performance from Ovechkin has been missed in Washington.

Ovechkin’s big day gives him eight goals on the season now and with his team seemingly starting to figure out how to play together, perhaps there’s more of this to come. Let’s not get too excited though, today’s win finally got the Caps out of last place in the NHL. Welcome to the basement, Buffalo.

Take a look at the goal Ovechkin scored to net him the hat trick. Also check out the save Hedberg makes to prevent him from scoring it sooner.

Good for him… to silence us critics ; )

        Great effort today.

Ovechkins certainly been looking a lot better the last few games, and this was the first game in which he didn’t look lost on the right side. If him and the Caps keep getting better…. they will be dangerous.

Though you’ll note he produces a big chunk of his offense on the left side on the power play. That’s, what, PP goal number five?

    • dcfan4life - Feb 24, 2013 at 7:43 AM

the Caps have won 4 out of their last 6 games, and Ovechkin has played quite well overall in those games. If you watch them from start to finish as i have, you can see he is making some solid adjustments to the left or right. Now once our D-man get back, Brooks Laich comes back, and Backstrohm wakes up, we may turn it around. Something i didnt think possible a few weeks ago.

This team is really starting to click. The power play is top 5 in the NHL, Holtbeast has finally found his happy place, and for the first time in years they look fundamentally sound. Sticks down, D disciplined, great forecheck… This is the progress I was hoping for. It can only go up from here boys!

He’s starting to get back to what he was… Ever since that Pittsburgh game where we got embarrassed at Consol, he’s been playing angry. He’s hitting, passing, and throwing pucks at the net. Keep going, Ovie!

Alexander the Great! Not a Caps fan; just a fan of the game, looking to see great performances.

    • chanceoffleury1 - Feb 23, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Agreed. Whether I like it or not, the game is a much better place with an elite Ovechkin.

  8. steelers88 - Feb 23, 2013 at 9:52 PM

Yeah the Pens are way better than your pathetic Crapitals we would beat you guys even without Malkin. I don’t even give the Caps the time of day.

    • prosportswashington - Feb 24, 2013 at 12:12 PM

Thats okat because the last time you beat us was the first time you beat us in what…8 games? 9?

  9. govtminion - Feb 24, 2013 at 12:03 AM

It was a hell of a game by him- very 2009-esque of him. I’ll wait to see if he starts playing like that more often before declaring that he’s ‘back’ though. One good game is fine- several would be much-needed.

It annoys me so much that people act as if him scoring a lot of goals from the left circle is actually a bad thing. He is an outstanding LW who is learning a new position, give him time
