giving any player a 15yr contract in the first place wasn’t the smartest move. he could of been a great goalie, if not for all his injuries. let’s make a deal.

Stefan wasn’t a bust. Stefan was overrated since day one. The IHL isn’t a good measuring tool for NHL-readiness and to draft first overall from that pool was just a dumb move.

His time on the Island is (thankfully) over. Give him a year to get himself right and play everyday. He’ll be back in the big leagues soon, maybe not this year, and will be a serviceable back-up somewhere else.

I remember a few months ago when a Dipietro article was out, I said how he was the biggest 1st overall pick/bust in the past 20 years and got downvoted like crazy and people were commenting saying he was a great goalie and blamed it on his “injuries”. Yeah right.

Missed the part about AHL’ers not charged against the cap, that’s also a part of the new CBA. Any player making over $900K at the AHL level will have the portion that exceeds $900K (hence Brough’s note about the $4.5M-$900K) count against the NHL team’s cap.

There are no more re-entry waivers under the new CBA, so no more “taking half the cap hit if he’s claimed when you try and bring a player back up.” The Isles would havee a free pass to bring him back to the club if he cleared but they still want him around as a backup.

Agreed. Staying healthy and talent are two different issues. Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway would be considered busts by that standard. Ricky was a Vezina candidate but he blew out his hip during the 2008 All-Star Weekend skills challenge. he never recovered from that and it has been down hill since.

There isn’t a lot of good moves being made in this franchise to solve all their problems. DiPietro was never a stellar performer. People want to say he was when he wasn’t prone to injury, and it’s simply not true. Three actual seasons as a starter and he put up average starting goaltender numbers. He stood out for a year in there…but come on. This has been a bone-head contract since day one. Nothing against Rick at all, it’s just a failure by one of the poorest run franchises in the NHL.

A lot of these rule changes were to control the owners and GMs because some of them need to be protected from themselves.

Have to watch if they call him back up. Someone might take a flyer on him for 1/2 his salary. Although with that albatross of a contract, it seems unlikely. You would think ownership would want him off the books if he isn’t going to be on the team. Like others said, they plan to move some other guys so they need his contract for the floor.

Althought, I thought AHL player’s werent charged against the cap…

davebabychreturns is right. DiPietro was going to the first team in that draft who needed a goaltender. Fleury went first over all, and in my opinion, he isn’t THAT much better than DiPietro was coming in to their respective drafts. The teams each played on are obviously the difference maker.

DP was highly touted as the next big thing.

I also had no idea it was Snow. Milbury gets all the negative credit for it. But now that I look it up, it shows the deal being signed Sept 13, 2006. Snow started with the Islanders in July of that summer.. So, yeah, I guess Milbury didn’t sign it. You’re right dude.

As cups mentioned, the Isles don’t care ass much about the cap hit as they do about the money spent, so a buyout – amnesty or not – is extremely unlikely since they probably can’t afford it (relatively speaking). It’s true enough they’ll still be paying him and still have his cap hit if/when he clears and is sent to the minors, but you can bet they’re hoping someone takes a flyer (not specifically the Flyers) on him.

Yeah I don’t know enough to say what it is really about for DiPietro.

My point is simply that you can’t expect a guy to hang it up and pass on tens of millions of dollars.. he signed that deal for the security so it’s tough to imagine him passing it up now that he actually needs it – and that’s the kind of money that can not just set you up for life, but your kids and theirs too.

I don’t think it’s even about the money for Rick at this point. If you hear him speak, it’s almost as if he has absolutely no doubts that he can come back and play at an elite level. Ricky isn’t going to retire, not because he wants to keep cashing the checks, but because he still sees his comeback as inevitable.

I respect it, but just don’t think it’s in the cards at this point. Wouldn’t mind seeing him hired to a position within the organization once he does finally decide to hang ‘em up.

killerpgh- The contract was all Wang and Snow was just coming in as GM when it was on the table. I think he might have technically been GM when it was signed, but when he was being hired it was already understood that Wang had put that offer on the table. Nothing he could do about it.

Islanders fans had better hope Dipietro is as non-materialistic as he looks in his team picture this year, because no sane person would leave $30m on the table because they were too proud to play minor pro hockey.
