I don’t understand why the NHL allows any hits in the open ice. I’m so sick of seeing amazing players like Paul Kariya and Eric Lindros have their careers cut in half because of crap like this. The NHL needs to protect it’s star players.

Sure it might be hard to prove intent, however it should be noted Clutterbuck was going for the puck. Meanwhile Hall never even looked at the puck. You can see a still shot of Hall sticking his leg out on Twitter.

Add in this happened with about 2:30 to go in the 3rd and the Oilers down 3-1 showing signs of frustration the entire period once the Wild took the lead…

He was lined up for a good hip check – ONLY put his hip out… and just connected poorly.

I didn’t se anything cheap about it.

I think Hall should have to sit until the full extent of Clutterbuck’s injury is assessed. Once they determine the extent of the injury, it should coincide with the suspension. Hall wants to make stupid dangerous plays, you have to pay for it. Little excessive I know, but it wasn’t even close to being a good hit.

I think Hall knew he was going to blow Clutterbuck up and thought he would get him hip on hip.

I think he is just too inexperienced, too blind or simply too reckless to have made the requisite effort to make sure he actually did that.

Hopefully he gets sat down a few games to think about his actions but the league has a history of going soft on important players (and Hall doesn’t have much of a history of playing like he’s put very much thought into anything).

To me it looked like Hall knew what he was doing (though that’s hard to prove) when he used his hip–the knee was the principle point of contact, and it’s up to Hall not to do that. Hopefully Mr. Inconsistent Shanahan will see that.

There was no reason for Hall to throw the hip check that he did on Clutterbuck, and I think it was a reckless and dangerous move by him.

Clutterbuck wasn’t close enough to the puck and play for him to throw down this kind of hit. It was a bad call, and he’ll face the consequences for it. Hopefully he smartens up about plays like this in the future.

Usually a hip check is well used when you’re trying to stop an oncoming player by pinning him on the boards or at least by making something close to hip-to-hip contact in open ice to stop your opponent in his tracks.

This is just another brain-dead play by Hall, except instead of putting himself in a position to suffer a devastating injury he’s done it to someone else.

The fact that he doesn’t see this isn’t exactly surprising, his lack of vision out there is going to cut his career short.

Yes, that’s the thing about trying to hip check – If done right, it’s a good hit. If you mess it up, like Hall did, there are consequences all around. I don’t think there was intent to injure but trying to hit a guy in a way that you really don’t know how is extremely reckless on Hall’s part and warrants a suspension.
