Lucic on Nash check: ‘I don’t hit dirty’

Some onlookers – including the New York Post’s Larry Brooks – believe that Milan Lucic went over the line when he hit Rick Nash in a Feb. 12 game. Lucic denied that notion to, though.

“I’m just trying to fore-check and do my job. I’m just trying to do what I get paid to do. I don’t hit dirty,” Lucic said. “I’ve had one [supplemental discipline] call about a hit in my six years so far. So you can criticize me if you want, but whatever. I’ve had dings where little guys have hit me too, but I was fortunate that I didn’t have to miss any time. If I targeted the head then the league would have been looking at it very closely. We’ve got our own team here and our own things to worry about.”

That check has fallen under scrutiny because Nash has been sidelined with what some believe might be concussion symptoms. (The Rangers haven’t been very forthcoming with that information, though.)

Here’s video of the hit that Lucic, 24, delivered on Nash, 28:

Lucic didn’t receive supplementary discipline for the hit.

This whole ‘issue’ was brought up by a stupid, uninformed article. It’s ridiculous that people are even questioning something like this. It makes me worry for the game.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 21, 2013 at 9:18 PM

The check lucic delivered started right on nash’s shoulder !

      • nunan - Feb 21, 2013 at 9:22 PM

Maybe Nash’s head hit the glass..but that’s not the checker’s responsibility.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Feb 21, 2013 at 9:31 PM

agree it really was a text book clean shoulder to shoulder hit

  2. bensawesomeness - Feb 21, 2013 at 9:10 PM

Here’s a word of advice to all NHL players. Don’t want the league, and it’s fans, to think you’re dirty? STOP HITTING GUYS IN THE HEAD!

On purpose or not, outside of a fight, there’s no reason for it to be in the game at all

    • hockeyflow33 - Feb 21, 2013 at 11:21 PM

You didn’t watch the play huh?

      • bensawesomeness - Feb 21, 2013 at 11:30 PM

eh i may have watched it while watching tv at the same time or something i guess.

        Point stands in general though.

I’m not seeing the ‘dirty’ part. Looks like a hit to me- you know, like you’re supposed to do in hockey?

    • oramisteek - Feb 22, 2013 at 4:29 PM

Forearm to the back of Nash’s head.

  4. mclovinhockey - Feb 21, 2013 at 9:46 PM

Wow lucic thinks he is not a dirty player??? If lucic is not dirty then I don’t know what is.

    • nunan - Feb 21, 2013 at 10:02 PM

You obviously don’t know ‘what is’..

      • mclovinhockey - Feb 22, 2013 at 4:36 PM

not saying that hit is dirty, I am just saying Lucic is dirty.
        Boarded Spacek, Walker, Rinaldo
        Ran down Miller
Cross Checked Lapierre in the face
        Sucker punched Hedman
Stuck a knee out on Mackenzie

Yup, Lucic is a dirty as hell player.

  5. habsman - Feb 21, 2013 at 10:00 PM

What a breathtaking display of bull-shyte. Lucic and the rest of his cheap shot, sucker punching scumbag teamates have got away with numerous incidents over the past several years because of Greg Campbell’s daddy Colin. That’s why he doesn’t have multiple suspensions. Does he think people are blind? Only the moron, racist Boston fans believe this guy is anything but a thug who can barely skate.

    • nunan - Feb 21, 2013 at 10:05 PM

You’re comical at this point..before I even read that, I keyed in on three topics I knew you would go to: Bruins are cheap-shot artists, Colin Campbell’s protecting the Bs, racist Boston fans. Check, check, and check.

      • govtminion - Feb 21, 2013 at 10:11 PM

        Yep. Same ol’, same ol’.

      • habsman - Feb 21, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Well aren’t you clever. No disputing the facts tho huh?

    • govtminion - Feb 22, 2013 at 12:02 AM

You know, the sad part is that you really get hockey- I mean, on threads that aren’t Bruins-related, it’s obvious you’re a fan of the game and really understand it. And yet, any thread even remotely Boston-related, you have to spew the same old tired ‘fans are racists, players are thugs, city is horrible’ schtick. What a waste.

    • valoisvipers - Feb 22, 2013 at 12:22 AM

Habsman Please just stop, you are making yourself look really bad.
Come on man, what team wouldn’t want Lucic?

    • odj810 - Feb 22, 2013 at 8:29 AM

gimme some more thugs that score 30 goals then.

    • rosettast0ned - Feb 22, 2013 at 10:57 AM

He doesn’t have multiple suspensions because he hasn’t done anything to warrant multiple suspensions. Lucic plays a fast physical game, he hits hard, not dirty, plus he scores 30 goals a season. Are you gonna have the authorities investigate the B’s over this one too? Still bitter from being ousted from the playoffs in 2011 despite having a 2 game lead to start the series? And don’t tell me you wouldn’t jump for joy if Lucic through some miracle ended up playing for the Habs.

Nobody even had a clue the hit even existe and its suddenly “WAAAAAAAAAA!!! what a dirty hit!!!” Until then it wasn’t even noticed. Shanhan is gonna laugh at this accusation.

  8. drewzducks - Feb 21, 2013 at 10:25 PM

Must have been a brutal hit seeing that it only took 9 bleeping days to determine that ithe gentle nudge by Luc MAY have been the source of Nash’s injury. Even Habsy knows this was a clean hit. He just must be venting after watching his beloved Frogs lose to the hapless Isles.

  9. kgun80 - Feb 21, 2013 at 10:31 PM

I hate Lucic!! But it was a clean hit!

  10. wildbillsrodeo - Feb 21, 2013 at 10:35 PM

Can Habsfan be an accurate judge, though, considering the police and detective forces of his city open a months long investigation into every physical hit laid on a Canadiens player? Go gag on some more smoked meat you Quebecois chump!

    • tatdue - Feb 22, 2013 at 10:39 AM

Grow up already….the racist sh!t is for chumps…..

  11. bcisleman - Feb 21, 2013 at 10:52 PM

Initial shoulder and elbow rode up to hit him in the head. If the ref sees it, MAYBE a minor penalty at most. Certainly not a major…although I have to laugh at Lucic protesting so loudly that he isn’t dirty!!!

    • nunan - Feb 21, 2013 at 11:03 PM

He’s not dirty. He fights and he hits…doesn’t make him dirty. I would actually like to see some evidence of his ‘cheap’ play because people make that accusation so often. I chalk it up to people just following the ‘herd’ vs actually watching him play. It’s like people calling Marchand a diver. I understand the dislike for him bc he is a rat but he’s dove maybe twice in his career and now he’s a diver, like Kesler? Lucic doesn’t slew foot, slash, hit unsuspecting players, etc. He just hits hard and sometimes, but rarely, someone gets hurt.

  12. box080809 - Feb 21, 2013 at 11:20 PM

That was one of the cleanest hits I’ve seen from Lucic. Poor decision on Nash’s part to turn his body at that particular moment.

Nunan: Lucic does not fight anyone who is a legitimate fighter. He rarely fights someone who would be considered in his weight class. He is the “school yard” bully of fighting, always picking on the little guy.

    • hockeyflow33 - Feb 21, 2013 at 11:24 PM

They have Thornton to fight actual fighters. Why would a first line player take himself out of the game for 5 minutes with a 3rd or 4th line guy?

    • nunan - Feb 21, 2013 at 11:59 PM

Never understood that argument. The first thing is that Lucic doesn’t fight that often, period…just a handful of times every year. He made his name fighting in his first season so first impressions stick. I get that. The fact that he is so good at fighting hurts him bc everyone thinks he is a ‘fighter’, a la Orr, Prust, Scott, etc. All those guys do is fight. Lucic is not like any of them though so people need to stop classifying him that way. The second thing is no matter who he fights, it’s never enough. I’ll use last year as an example. He fought Carkner (this year too), Prust, and Komisarek. Opinions may differ on those guys but, beyond John Scott and Orr, who else is there? All those guys are big and can handle themselves. Carkner is 6’5″ 230. Since when are those guys not ‘good enough’. Yes, then he fought Kaleta and Gaustad who both came after him. If he had to fight Shawn Thornton, would that not be good enough? Thornton’s only 6’2″ but we all know he is one of the better fighters in the league. Would Lucic just be fighting another smaller guy?

      • 19to77 - Feb 22, 2013 at 12:26 AM

Man, the day we hear about him duking it out with Chara in practice still isn’t going to convince the haters that he takes on guys his own size. There’s no winning this one, I fear. Haters gotta hate, you know?

      • ironyisadeadscene - Feb 22, 2013 at 6:28 AM

You never understood it because it doesn’t make sense. Good post. Nothing you can do about “fans” who only track certain players/teams by reading headlines and regurgitating other people’s opinions on sites like this.

  13. isithockeyseasonyet - Feb 21, 2013 at 11:24 PM

There’s actually an article about that hit? Woof

  14. 19to77 - Feb 22, 2013 at 12:31 AM

His arm rode up a bit, but that’s just natural speed and force and Nash losing his footing. I can see how it might have been the cause of an injury from Nash’s reaction, but it’s still clean even if he did get a little banged up.

  15. ahuophfe - Feb 22, 2013 at 3:49 AM

    Reblogged this on bnfblogs.

  16. dboldave - Feb 22, 2013 at 8:48 AM

If this is a dirty hit than you had better start suspending everyone because I see similiar hits in almost every game going. It’s unfortunate that Nash is hurt but I see nothing dirty about this hit at all. Let’s just be glad this hit wasn’t on a Montreal player or we’d have another police investigation of a Bruins player.

  17. nosefacekillah - Feb 22, 2013 at 9:33 AM

Silly article on a silly situation. Hopefully Nash will be back at it soon, he is fun to watch. Great having him in the East.

  18. arbruins - Feb 22, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Grow up Habsman! Your BS is getting old. It was a clean hit and you know it.
