My favorite comment was nothing good ever comes out of Philly. Lets see if I can come up with a few. 1776 and the Declaration of Independence I guess that wasn’t good. The first library, the first fire department and the first mint all came from where? That’s right where oh ya Philly. A world renowned children’s hospital I guess Philly doesn’t have one of those. Bill Cosby he is from Philly. Larry Fine of the Three Stooges was from Philly. Wilt Chamberlin some would consider him the G.O.A.T in basketball came from Philly. Mike Schmidt, while not from Philly, played his entire career here and is considered the greatest 3rd basemen of all time. Should I continue?

Don’t you ever, EVER make a post about anything related to Philly and use the term WE when you say ridiculous things lie this!!!! You’re obviously about 14 if you think this happened recently as you have not had the inclination yet yo educate yourself abut the history of your own teams. What an embarrassment.

I just got a huge reality check of the age and maturity of the rest of you when only phillyphanatic77 is the only person who has any clue about when this actually took place. Even Ryanrockzzz was wrong while getting the basics of the story right. It was waaaayyy more than over 20 years ago but at least you knew it wasn’t recent. And it wasnt only about 30 people who booed him, the ENTIRE stadium booed him and it was about 300 that pelted him with snowballs.

You youngins need to realize that there’s a standard of “fandom” you could call it, that you must live up to if you’re going o come to a public forum like this and represent the entire fan base. You have a duty and obligation to the rest of us to actually look up stats and facts before running your mouths, we leave that to Pitt fans.

The santa incident is a total misconception that happened over 40 years ago. I’ve said this before on this site but …. it happened on a hideously snowy day that thousands of Philadelphia fans braved to see a terrible Eagles product. Management had cut corners putting out a horribly inept squad combined with an even worse coaching staff. The fans felt as if they deserved better, and they did. The real santa didn’t show up because of the weather so the front office decided to pull a skinny, drunk worthless excuse for a Santa off the streets and threw him in an oversized suit. He was an embarrassment. It was just another “F U” from ownership to the loyal fans who paid good money for a horrendous product. So yeah they booed. And threw snowballs. And it was justified. The national media continually fuels misconceptions about Philadelphia fans because it makes for better ratings. What about Canucks fans almost destroying the City of Vancouver after losing? What about SF Giants fans beating someone to death? What about Browns fans almost knocking out numerous refs in 2001 with debris after they disagreed with a call? Or the White Sox fans who charged the field and attacked a Royals coach? All fanbases have jackasses but there’s NOTHING that makes Pens fans superior to Flyers fans. No matter how aloof and superior you think you are. And just bringing up those stereotypical “philly hate” examples shows how uninformed you are.

Critcizing a player who is tied for the NHL lead in points and assists with such a misleading stat as +/- for one night? LAME. As a Pens fan, I thought the Flyers have contained Crosby as well as any team for the past 2 years. Its not a knock on Crosby per se (maybe more on Bylsma), but I mainly credit the Flyers for good strategy and good play against them. Great game, glad both teams came to play!

for the love of god, please stop bringing up santa claus when you dont know anything about it or why it happened. the person who was supposed to be santa that day couldnt get there due to poor weather. so they picked a guy out of the stands as a replacement. the guy was COMPLETELY wasted and was the worst excuse for a santa claus in the history of santa’s. he absolutely deserved every boo and iceball that came his way. it aggravates me until no end that people still make that same tired arguement regardless if they have any clue about the actual facts or not. its the most overblown incident in all of sports.

As a Pens fan, the problem with this game was the fact that the Pens got outworked and got their butts handed to them. The Flyers baited them into playing a different game and taking stupid penalities. Yes the 7 cross checks to Malkin’s back were a bit excessive but that is 1 series and the root of the problem is that lack of focus and responsibility by the Pens as a team. Enough of blaming the refs, the Flyer fans or the weather. Their isn’t enough physical presence from the pens defensemen in most situations. They need to be more physical and clear the front of the net no matter who is goal. Their play has been so inconsistent and that is the fault of the coaching staff and players for lack of focus and concentration. They Flyers played their game and they won. Its that simple. Hard work will always beat those with talent that are lazy and last nights game proved that point. As for the fans comments, I have been to games in Philly and it is no different than Pittsburgh. Ignorant fans both places. But as fans from both sides have pointed out, the fans out West of the dodgers, giants, 49ers, Raiders, etc are on a completely different level of idiocy.

The Pens have 1 second overall pick and 2 first overall picks on their roster right now, and one of those first overalls didn’t even play last night. Aside from that, Fleury is a goalie anyway. Yes, he was a first overall, but he is more realistically a late first round or second round pick in the sense that you can’t even utilize him as an NHL regular for 2 to 3 years.

I’ve said this before, but the Flyers have a pair of Top 5 pick Schenn’s, Voracek is a 7th overall, Couturier and Coburn were both Top 10 overall picks. It’s not like the Flyers are playing with scrubs. They have a lot of high draft picks on their roster. The bottom line is that neither team is playing with bottom feeders that weren’t supposed to make the NHL. A lot of the guys on both rosters just have natural talent and came with high expectations when they were drafted. The “pure draft talent” of both teams is pretty even when you consider Dupuis and Kunitz were both undrafted and Neal was a 2nd rounder.

I cannot tell you how much I enjoy seeing intelligent hockey posts from both sides’ fans in here amongst the mouth-breathing drivel. Thank you to those of you who actually discuss hockey instead of making lame jokes at each other!

That was a great game, but neither team can be very happy with goaltending the day after (I know I was glad I benched Bryz on my fantasy team!). Vokoun looked awful- a sentence uttered far too often last year around here in D.C., for sure. Some of those goals- from BOTH sides- were almost embarrassing. But, the game was everything you expect from these two teams- high scoring, lots of penalties, a photo-finish… if I wanted to get a friend interested in NHL hockey, this would be the game I’d want them to sit down and watch. (Since I love a good defensive struggle, I thought Blues/Avs afterwards was even better, mind you)

I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping the Flyers and Penguins find each other again in the playoffs. The fans deserve more of this!

The refs did make some questionable calls like they do every game. For example, Harry Z got a boarding call, then there was clear retaliation which is always called as well ( roughing or interference would fit to call there) and there was blood drawn which is an automatic double minor. Refs only called the boarding, giving the pens a PP… However the call could have been a double minor for boarding as well cause it was a harsh hit. So the refs perception of the play really is the questionable aspect of the calls but overall the calls were fair.

Ah they shouldn’t. The flyers needed that 7-0 win on the Island. Restore a little bit of confidence. I do have to say thought, I think people are underestimating the Flyers 4th line. There is a reason Rinaldo has stayed in the line up. The guy is pure energy. I do have to give him props for playing “semi” smart last night and not dropping the gloves. I thought Lavy did a great job of matching the O’line’s last night. Defensivly, both teams sucked (IMO).

That was the greatest regular season game I have seen in my lifetime. If you were on the fence about being a hockey fan and had the chance to watch last night’s Flyers/Penguins game and still dislike hockey, you must dislike sunny days too.

As a Flyers fan, it was great to see them get the two points. I thought the Penguins were going to tie it with 15 seconds left in the game. Long way to go, but I’d be excited for another Flyers/Penguins first round playoff match-up (although I’d prefer to see it in the semi-finals).

Hopefully the Panthers don’t bring us down to Earth tonight. That would be sad.

Of course any national publication is going list Philly #1… because it’s just what the reputation of Philly fans has… and if they don’t list Philly #1 then the person who wrote the piece is going to come under fire by either his editor or any one who reads the article.
Lately, there is far worse going on in other stadiums (induced vomitting excluded). Stabbings/Beatings in the west coast… classlessness of Boston fans mocking Torrey Smith over his brother’s passing… Can you imagine the headlines if this were to happen in Philly? But, most of it is second page news…
People who write publications like that are only out for “views” or “hits” … so they appeal to reputations and what their perceived readers want to read. And what better way to get reader appeal than to constantly bring up booing Santa/Irvin, etc…
I’m not saying we are saints… but, it’s all reputation at this point. Except for idiots like the vommitter… what a dirtbag — but give us all a pass b/c he was from Jersey, nothing good comes from Jersey…
