they had better make sure anyone hitting anyone in the head gets a game from now on in otherwise this is total bull shiite. it was a reckless play but the NHL doesn’t have rules against reckless but with this ruling they’ve created a new precedent.

To me the hit would have probably only garnered a fine if the hit was to his chin/face… but the fact that it was to the back of the head is what probably pushed Shanny into a suspension. Its a one game suspension (big deal, EVEN in a shortened season it’s no big deal/only thing that gets hurt here is Hansens checking account) but more importantly it sets a precedent that hits from behind ESPECIALLY to the head are going to get you suspended. PERIOD!!

Oh and I’m a Wild fan so yeah, I guess you can call me bias but I’m truly trying not to be. Looking at the fact that it was Canucks and the hit was on a star player (Hossa) should have NO BEARING on the facts. I do believe he didn’t intend to injure, he just caught in a bad position and it happened. Its really no different than the guy getting his stick lifted by a defensmen and this stick hits one of the defensemens teammates in the face and the guy whose stick was lifted gets the penalty. You have to be responsible for your stick, in this case you have to take responsibility for your elbow/forearm when your are going for a puck and a guys back is turned to you.

He has one incentive: He now has one suspension on his record. Next time he does this, he will have a ‘history of secondary discipline’ on his record.

Right , it’s only in the ghettos that there is murders. And where do these ghettos come from? What you say a country built it’s empire on 400 years of racist slavery and consistently impoverished and degraded an entire race which makes up a huge percentage of this country and then armed everybody, and you say this leads to violence? Naw, how? It must be those damn ghettos, it’s their problem. Illinois is the most corrupt state in the union. It’s famous for it. Chicago had 500 murders last year and the problem is getting worse. 500!!!! Kind of puts a stupid sports riot in perspective. I like the USA, I really do. But I sure am glad I’m not American. Because as we all know, rioting is okay if its just a little bit of rioting. So long as you keep it under a million in damages it’s no biggie.

And seriously…Vancouver is going to lose it’s franchise to Seattle? Just how stupid are you? Vancouver is the seventh most valuable franchise in the league behind only the original six. And they boast the league’s longest consecutive sellout streak. And they have the fifth highest average ticket price.

This is precisely why I don’t take Hawks fans seriously. Comments like this belie just how desperate they are to find criticisms to throw at Vancouver and how they won’t let anything, including facts, stop them.

I don’t understand why the explanation above cannot be accepted by Canucks fans. It’s clear he drove the elbow into Hossa’s head. I’m a Bruins fan and I can admit when guys on our team deserve to be suspended (i.e. Marchand last year after going low in the Canucks-Bruins brawl game). God forbid people question the righteousness of the Canucks, their fans start attacking the city of the opposing team. Maybe that irrationality is what made them trash their own city after the B’s whooped them in the Cup. Also I find it pretty amusing Canucks fans complain about Hansen getting 1 game this early in the season and they choose to ignore how Burrows was NOT suspended at all for BITING Bergeron.

I’m sorry, but one game is a joke even if you’re just looking at opportunity cost. Basically, there’s no incentive whatsoever to not do this to another team’s top player if that’s all you’re going to do. The cheap shot (sorry, there’s no way that a professional athlete has so much control over his body except for those few seconds while basically standing still) cost his team 2 minutes and a lesser player sitting out the next game. In exchange, they get to take out of the top players in the league for the rest of the game and possibly more. That’s extremely dirty, but logically a move most teams would make. This isn’t a suspension with any teeth at all.

And for the Cannucks fans pointing at the Keith hit and calling it dirty, you’re right. It was. There was also a multi-game suspension behind it pulling a top defender in the league off the ice. That’s at least something of a real incentive not to pull this crap again. One game doesn’t cut it. It’s a joke.
