If one 3 point game against a team with some of the worst goaltending in the league makes Giroux the "definition of a leader", what does that make Tavares, who has already had 3 three point games so far this season? or better yet, what does that make Toews who, even though he's younger than Giroux, is leading his team to a record breaking point streak to start the season while putting up career pace numbers and quarterbacking an unstopabble PK unit? He has to do all this and he still finds time to polish his Cup Ring and Gold Medal.

I mean, Giroux is extremely talented without a doubt, don't get me wrong. But you can't just go around saying stuff like this because he has one good game, and not expect a response. Next thing you know, people are gonna be calling him the best player in the world because he gets hot at the right time and has a few good games! Oh, wait..............

I never said that any time the team is successful it's due solely to Giroux, nor any time they fail it has nothing to do with Giroux. I was merely making a point about Giroux receiving a lot of criticism for calling the team out in the midst of his slump. If you watched the game he clearly set the tone for the entire team, much like game 6 against the Pens. He backed up his talk with his play on the ice, something a good captain must do. I'm not taking any credit away from Bryz, Voracek, Schenn, Briere, or Read. They all played a huge role, but it starts with the captain. He played like a man possessed. And that's what we've been looking for. You win and lose as a team, but your captain sets the tone. Does it mean the slumps over? No one knows. But that was the type of effort we expect out of the Flyers.

As for Read, you're right he is probably one of the more unsung players in the entire NHL. And there's no question he's been the Flyers most consistent performer so far. But that doesn't mean we don't appreciate him in Philadelphia. He's not flashy like Giroux or Briere and he's not a big hitter like Schenn or Simmonds, he just goes out and plays solid two-way hockey on every shift. He's somewhat like Pascal Dupuis in that he doesn't get a ton of recognition but he's always contributing somethingpositive. The reason I posted up above is because Giroux finally showed what we all expected yesterday. It doesn't take anything away from the other key performers, it's just nice to see him walking the walk after talking the talk. Read, being so consistent, wasn't the big story yesterday. Doesn't mean he's not integral to the Flyers success.

I understand what you are saying...but agree with aso - it's one game, and they've allowed themselves to get to 11th place or so? The Flyers had a good game, a lot of them did, certainly not just Giroux and everytime someone does something right it is NOT due to Giroux. Also, everytime someone does something bad it does NOT mean that Giroux is a bad leader. If this crap you are spewing is true...that everything comes back to Giroux, that would mean that 10 times out of 17, Giroux is an unacceptible leader.

Change of subject - it's a wonder we never hear you guys talk about Read. He's the most consistent guy on the squad. I understand that he wasn't a first round pick and you can't claim he's the anticrosby, but it didn't take ONE good game to give him the same number of points as Giroux, and more goals. That guy deserves a little credit - his performance has had nothing to do with Giroux's ups and downs that you describe above.

I knew there would be a response that it's only a game, but it has to start with one game. You can't get your game on track or start a winning streak without that first game. What I meant to emphasize is Girouxs leadership as opposed to overall team ability. There were tons of people questioning Giroux for calling out his team after he, himself, was failing to produce. Well what's important about this one game is that Giroux backed himself. He did what he said he had to do. He put the team on his back, just like last season, which is what a captain has to do. I am fully aware that it's one game. But it showed the capability of this squad. They are better than their record when you look at their skill level. And they showed that today. Of course they have weaknesses but so does every team. I'm not saying they're all of a sudden contenders, what I'm saying is that hockey is cyclical. Teams and superstars struggle, then they come out of it. Is this the game that starts that? Nobody knows. But it's atleast an indication that Giroux is the player we thought he was. And this team is capable of being the club we all expected.

Not sure what happened to the Islanders but the Flyers looked like an all-star team playing a midget team. I expected the Flyers to have a tough time time keeping the puck out of their net but I never expected the lack of offense. I expect another close, gritty game wed.

They were perfect on penalty kill and the best I've seen in a long time on the pp. they were just scary on the pp today. The passes were clean guys were where they needed to be and zone time was amazing. Granted it is nyi but you need to start somewhere. That top line was unstoppable and voracek actually held onto the puck and not just turning it over as soon as he got over the blue line.

You do realize it was one game right? Say they come out on Wednesday and get beat 3-0, does that still mean Giroux is an awesome leader?

And to say that they are way better than their record indicates isn't entirely true, you do realize their defense is below average and they've struggled to score goals consistently. You are what your record is.

This is the type of production we've been waiting for. For all you Pens fans questioning Giroux and his leadership after he called out the team- today was the game where you saw what kinda captain he is. He talked, criticized himself and the team, then went out there and followed through. He was everywhere today. Stealing pucks, hitting people, sending tape to tape passes, and finally finishing. And when he set the tone in the 1st the entire team picked themselves up to another level. This is the team we've been missing. Obviously they're not good enough to constantly blow teams away but they shouldn't be close to what their record says they are. If the top two lines can continue solid production and they eliminate turnovers theyre on their way past .500.
