He went for the big names and when he didn’t catch any of them he tried to fill in holes with Magic Putty because it was his only option at that point. It happens. At that point you hope for the best. I don’t think it’s a situation where he didn’t do his job, I just think the already-thin market dried up quick and he had to hunker down and hope the team had enough wins by the trade deadline to justify making a move for a defenseman at that point. At the very least, Bryz has played well this year which has covered up many deficiencies. He’s directly responsible for at least half of those 6 wins. They could be a much worse team than they have been already.

Who going get traded next jvr seems be scoring better than rest of first line hell 4th line needs be our first look how much they scored. The Devils wouldn’t be so hot if Marty Brodeur wasn’t playing lights out Vintage Brodeur style goaltending. With games so close together. Players not ready, and newer guys coming up from AHL to replace injured players (another consequence of the lockout) its all on a goalies shoulders now. This whole season is gonna feel like one long playoff run.

If the Flyers were able to acquire Weber it would be a completely different dynamic. He would supply that presence that we once had with Pronger. Teams go through highs and lows- just look at the Lightning and Sharks- so eventually the Flyers will hit their stride. No question they’re struggling but it will change at some point.

I hate this arguement because last season the whole league was praising Holmgrens on-the-fly rebuild. Now bc they’re struggling it’s a poorly constructed team. That’s wrong. The most successful teams are ones with a franchise defenseman, and this team had one. But the loss of Pronger was a huge issue. They tried to replace him with Weber but that didn’t work. And I just don’t think they have the ability to overcome the loss of a steadying presence like that. But it’s not for a lack of trying. Until they can bring in that top notch dman they will never be true contenders. But they absolutely have the ability to be a playoff team, they’re just mired in struggles right now.

Laviolette has switched them up so much to try and get a spark that he hasn’t allowed any chemistry to develop. Giroux isn’t producing but it’s unfair to put this squarely on his shoulders. He may not be scoring points but he’s still backchecking and setting an example on the ice. The problem is the constant turnovers in the defensive and neutral zones. Along with the fact that they chip the puck on every offensive rush then don’t put in the effort to retrieve.
