Watch Jonathan Toews fight Joe Thornton

Feb 16, 2013, 9:16 AM EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks handled the San Jose Sharks pretty easily on Friday night, beating them 4-1 to improve their record to 11-0-3. With that in mind, the most surprising moment of the game probably came when Jonathan Toews dropped the gloves with Joe Thornton in a rare captain vs. captain fight:

As of this writing, a whopping 91.8 percent of Hockey Fights’ voters gave Jumbo Joe the win.

That’s just the third fight of Toews’ career; his other two scuffles came against David Backes and Martin Hanzal. (Apparently he likes taking on rugged centers.)

The 24-year-old forward seemed pretty happy to come out of the fight in one piece, according to what he said to NHL.com’s Brian Hedger.

“I’m still here and still standing, so that’s a good thing, right?” Toews said. “I felt it was something I needed to do to stand up for myself and I did it and I’m glad I did.”

Thornton has more fights on his resume, although he’s mellowed out since being shipped from Boston to San Jose.

Even if fights can give a team a boost, chances are high that the Sharks and Blackhawks would prefer their big-money leaders will avoid squabbles on most nights.

    Good ol bout

Toews probably shouldn’t fight anymore, or at least pick his opponents better. He got destroyed by Backes and Thorton probably could have killed him. I understand trying to stand up for yourself or your team but seriously.

Much as I love Toews, this is just about the only thing he can’t do. He’s enormously skilled, a two-way gem and a brilliant playmaker, but he’s a really bad fighter. I get that he has the “do it all” mentality, but seriously, this is not his thing.

I used to like Toews, now he’s just an idiot who somehow got away with all the garbage, who for SOME reason wanted to fight a near pacifist in Joe Thorton. I hope the next time Toews throws a hissy fit like this he loses his teeth and gets a reminder that he’s not a tough guy. And certainly not that great of a captain.

Classy of joe not to embarrass toews, he really could have killed him!

Haha, I was eating and doing homework while watching this game last night and as soon as I heard “And Toews and Thornton are gonna fight!” my head shot up so fast and I literally said “WHAT!?” out loud with my mouth full. I know it was over Toews’ concussion last year, but he needs to realize that Joe could have easily given him another one last night. One can only hope he’s done with it and got it out of his system. I feel like somebody needs to send Joe and edible arrangement or something for not just killing him.

I hate how the title taunts me, as videos never show on the iPhone or iPad app. Sigh. An chance of an app upgrade in the future?

    • goalieguy37 - Feb 16, 2013 at 12:24 PM

      amen. the mobile app sucks.

      • lordstanley65 - Feb 17, 2013 at 1:33 AM

Absolutely. Skip the app. I just watched it on my iPad by going on the site with Safari. Works every time.

great fight very very seldom do you see captains for each team banging but it was a awesome fight. but either way my $ is on D-roc Engelland or Colton Orr

section138, apparantly you need a Galaxy S. They don’t play on my Droid X either. Seen them play on the S though. Very weak NBC.

  9. spochiefsfan - Feb 16, 2013 at 12:52 PM

I can’t watch them on my galaxy s3 either. Or optimus v. Bum deal NBC!

Thanks for not killing a huge part of my fantasy team Jumbo Joe!

No mention of the game? Or how San Jose couldn’t stop Chicago’s FOURTH line? :)

    • comeonnowguys - Feb 16, 2013 at 1:30 PM

I mean, aside from score and all. :)

Toews is stupid, Thorton coulda destroyed him, what the hell is he thinking, picking a fight with his visor still on? Pathetic, I used to think Toews might be another Yzerman but I was wrong.

  12. letthecoldcome - Feb 16, 2013 at 2:22 PM

Agreed with everyone else. Upgrade the mobile app so we can watch videos.
