Eh. I’d argue that’s the Sabres’ system and coaching more than him. Having Chara around to teach the kid how to use his size is going to do a lot for his career, and Boston’s one of the absolute best defensive teams. He’ll learn a lot from them.

What was also impressive was his shot to the side of the net that bounced over the net right onto Peverly’s stick. Dumb luck on that particular play but it shows his hockey IQ is already pretty high.

we were saying the same thing about Myers. Not saying Myers is a wash, or Dougie will be the same, just saying that first year can put you out there, even win you the calder, and you can go into a 2 year slump before you know it.

It usually takes longer for a two-way D to develop his game in the NHL compared to, say, a forward. Figuring out how to stay in defensive position without sacrificing offensive chances is hard, and vice versa – hence why the Fowlers and Faulks of the League have such awful plus-minus to go with their higher offensive totals.

Bottom line is, he’ll take a couple years to figure it all out, but once he’s adjusted he’s gonna be scary good.
